It's less than a month until the greatest sport event of the year, the Euro 2016 football tournament. :) It is held in France and starts on June 10th and goes on for a month. :frog: The top two teams of each group + the best four third placed teams go on to the Round of Sixteen. This is new due to there being 24 teams (as opposed to 16 teams the last few times) in this year's edition. This means more games, i.e. more TV money.

14 players who won the world cup in Brazil, but also quite a few fresh young faces.
Based on their current form, neither Schweinsteiger nor Podolski should have a place in this team. Let's see if they can make the cut.
Podolski plays in Turkey?! Dude's crazy.
Go England, ffs, Go England.
Who do you figure the two 20 year old Julians were named after? Julian Lennon?
And what does the steiger in Schweinsteiger mean?
Steiger in High German designates a foreman in mining. No idea if it has a different meaning in Bavarian. It may be related to the verb "steigen", which means to climb (a stairwell or mountain, not a tree).
Pig foreman? Pig climber? :hmm:
A lot of German names don't mean anything.

According to the French press, one notable fact is Kevin Trapp not being among the three German goalkeepers. He's the current goalkeeper of Paris Saint-Germain. ;)
Trapp à la trappe, says the franco press ( untranslatable pun intended).
Does not really matter. If Neuer doesn't get an injury, he is the clear #1 anyway. There is just no way around him.
Neuer being #1 is no surprise, it's just that they expected Trapp instead of Leno.
Close call between Trapp, Leno and ter Stegen, all of which are excellent. Germany never seems to have a goalkeeper problem.
This means it's time for the Languish Euro 2016 Pool.
L.
Tickets for the Romania and Iceland games are still available (sorry Legbiter). Games won't be sold out. :P
If you want to catch a glimpse of your team at the base camps here it is:

Before you ask, no fun to be had by pointing out which team has Vichy as base camp: it's Slovakia.
Teams go mostly for camps near the sea, near Paris/Île de France or in the mountains (Alps or Massif Central).
No love for Northern or Eastern France (no Germany or Switzerland in Elsaß sorry).
Marcoussis for Portugal is the base camp of the French national rugby team. Good choice unless the rugby players wrecked the grass in the last training cycle.
Chances of bombing?
I do think we'll get at least an attempt :(
Germany is just over in Evian ey, should pop on the boat to go say hello.
Chances of bombing? Reduced for England since they are not in Calais. :smarty:
I like that the Welsh are staying in Celtic country.
Russia at Malmaison? That's not Nappy's place is it?
Also, there's a football tournament on?

France is Welschland, not many Bretons speak the Brythonic language anyways.
It's more of a Joséphine de Beauharnais place actually. So they said when I visited it.
Euro tournament in France, so yes the Dutch don't seem to qualify there, once more after 1984, when there were only 8 teams qualified. :P
The latest polemic! In other news, Benzema is still an idiot
Only 6 to 8 black players in the French team, Didier Deschamps is really racist, against whites that is. Self-hatred? :tinfoil: Anti-semitic as well (cue Languish North American canard) and anti-asian too.
Interestingly enough, Benzema feels more Algerian, at least in public statements but prefers playing for France, since the pay is better I guess. As for the sex-tape scandal, calling somebody a faggot over the phone (tarlouze) does not indicate friendly intentions usually. Not even for the new generation as Benzema claimed.
https://www.afp.com/en/news/829/benzema-says-deschamps-bowed-racists-over-euro-snub (https://www.afp.com/en/news/829/benzema-says-deschamps-bowed-racists-over-euro-snub)
QuoteFrance's top scorer Karim Benzema on Wednesday accused coach Didier Deschamps of bowing to pressure from a "racist" political party (sic parte in Castilian does not have this meaning) by not choosing him for the country's Euro 2016 squad.
The Real Madrid striker, who is being investigated over an alleged sex-tape blackmail case, questioned whether Deschamps left him out because of his Algerian descent.
The comments echo similar accusations from French legend Eric Cantona, who last week said Deschamps had excluded Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa because of their North African heritage -- drawing a threat of legal action from the coach's lawyer.
Benzema told Spanish daily Marca that Deschamps "bowed to pressure from a racist French party" in his selection, referencing the recent electoral success of France's far-right National Front.
Didier Deschamps has excluded Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa from the France Euro 2016 squad
"I do not know if this decision was only down to Didier, because I get along with him, with the president (of the French Football Federation, Noel Le Graet) and everyone," he said.
Benzema was suspended from international duty in December over a legal investigation into an alleged attempt by one of his friends to blackmail his teammate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape.
France's leading goal-scorer faces up to five years in jail over accusations he encouraged Valbuena to pay the blackmailers.
"They said I cannot be selected, fine. But on a sporting level, I don't understand why," he said.
"At a legal level, I am still innocent until proven guilty. They should wait until the justice system has made its decision."
- Sex-tape inquiry -
Benzema remains France's top striker, with 27 goals in 81 appearances, despite the emergence of the younger Antoine Griezmann and Anthony Martial.
Karim Benzema tweeted: "Unfortunately for me and for those who have always backed me and supported me, I will not be selected for our Euro in France"
His path to the French Euro 2016 squad was cleared when legal restrictions stopping him playing on the same team as Valbuena were lifted.
But French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and other politicians have opposed any rehabilitation while the sex-tape inquiry goes on.
"The only person who knows what happened in this affair, who knows the truth, is Valbuena," Benzema told Marca.
"He played a role, he has not told the truth. I wanted to help him, nothing more, and the whole thing blew up in my face."
The exclusion of Ben Arfa and Benzema from the national squad has caused waves in France, which is struggling with racial tensions after two deadly terrorist attacks in Paris.
Ben Arfa, of Tunisian origin, had been hopeful of making the squad after relaunching his career at Nice, but instead had to settle for a place on Deschamps's standby list of eight players.
Adding to the controversy, Cantona said in fresh comments published in Le Journal du Dimanche that without the two players, the squad does not reflect the France he loves.
Deschamps has refused to comment on Cantona's accusations, although his lawyer last week said he planned to take legal action.
FFF president Graet dismissed Cantona's initial comments as "stupid" and "pathetic".
Germany sadly didn't nominate Reus as he is injured again. Too bad for him, always missing the big tournaments. :(

So what is the conventional wisdom for England's performance and the impact on the Brexit referendum? If they do well, a euphoric British nation believes it can rise above Europe from the outside? Or that this whole Europe thing is a lot of fun and they want to stay a part of it?
And if they do poorly (the likely outcome, I think), a defeated country will lack the confidence to go out on their own, or a grumpy country will want to tell its neighbors to get off its lawn?

If England is out of the tournament by the end of the group phase (dubious), by the round of 16, Brexit wins as a revenge against UEFA/EU etc. ;)
By Quarter finals and later, Brexit becomes more and more improbable.
Allowed to win: (in order)
Belgium
France
Italy
Germany
Not allowed to win: (in order)
Portugal (no explanation needed)
England (the inevitable "we suck, we're never going to win, OMG WE CAN WIN THIS, no we didn't, of course we didn't, we suck" is the closest I'll get to watching Holland play)
Spain (still haven't got over 2010)
Russia (doped assholes)
Anyone else winning would be hilarious.

Heard on NPR that some French dude was arrested in Ukraine with a large stash of weapons he was planning on using to attack fodbol matches, mosques and synagogues to protest Muslim immigration and stuff.

If it's true, classic tension strategy. French sources do not see him as a terrorist yet, but arms smuggler at the very least. I guess if links to supply islamist groups were proven that could change. The last precedent is some arm smuggler linked to the far-right and/or police informer, who presumably sold some weapons to Coulibaly, responsible for the Hyper Casher attacks.

Serbia and Turkey should be in there with them. In the end, everyone would unite by hating on Serbia.
Switzerland Vs. Albania should also be fun. 6 Swiss internationals are ethnically Albanian, having either been born in Switzerland or moved there when very young, while 9 Albanian internationals either were born in Switzerland and/or played for the Swiss squad until U-21, when they declared for Albania. There are even two brothers, the Xhakas, one in each team, the older Taulant in Albania and the younger Granit in Switzerland.
Instead of the Euros our team is in Japan playing the Kirin Cup. We lost in penalties in the semis to Bosnia but beat the hell out of Bulgaria in the 3rd place final. Eriksen scored a hattrick. Utterly unsatisfying still. :(

There was another round of it with the ongoing Benzema controversy which I mentioned earlier in the thread.

He then said that he had never said that and after it became clear that he had indeed said it, said that he didn't know Boateng was colored. Ah, I read the "not wanting Boateng as a neighbour" story. Apparently after he said that some paper went to talk with Boateng's real neighbours (at some upscale residential complex in Munich) and they all said that he's a lovely person and family man.

I am afraid this won't be the only event of this type cancelled due to the terrorist threat. It will probably be the rule for all teams :(
Fun already started early in Marseille with incidents between drunken English hooligans and Marseille scum as in '98. French media say "Marseillais" i.e Marseille people but that's not really convincing.

By PETER ALLEN IN MARSEILLE FOR MAILONLINE

French police have reportedly had to use tear gas on English fans in Marseille after violent clashes broke out when supporters started singing: 'ISIS, where are you?'.
Riot police used tear gas and baton charges after fighting broke out beside two bars where hundreds of supporters had spent Thursday drinking in the French city's Old Port area.
Local French youths are thought to have attacked England supporters who had massed outside the Queen Victoria pub, and O'Malley's, an Irish bar next door, before England's first group game of Euro 2016 against Russia on Saturday.
Marseille is a port city with a strong Islamic community. It is believed Muslims make up a third of the population, but it not known if religious tensions caused the fight.
'They were baiting us, and then attacked,' said one fan from Leeds, who asked to be named solely as Simon.
'None of the England fans were doing anything wrong – a few of us had a bit much to drink, but that was all.
'Suddenly a French gang appeared and started attacking us, and throwing stuff. We had to defend ourselves, and then the police showed up.'
Groups of fans were then seen running in different directions, as restaurants and bars in the area quickly shut doors and pulled down shutters.
At least one England fan could be seen lying in a pool of blood, apparently having been knocked out.
Others spoke of their fear as they were targeted by youths brandishing makeshift weapons, and shouting 'Get the English'.
England football fans scuffle with police in Marseille
Here we go: Roy Hodgson's side begin their campaign against Russia in Marseille on Saturday evening. But their loyal support have already got their month-long tournament underway with a hearty day's drinking in the summer sun
Cheer: The party began early this morning as the first few planes from across the Channel touched down in the south of the country
Chris Lord, another England fan from London, said: 'This was a really nasty attack. The gang knew exactly where we were, and clearly wanted to hurt us.'
As well as riot police, undercover officers brandishing stun guns and telescopic truncheons picked off anybody behaving badly.
Police first responded to the violence at around 11.45pm, and by midnight ambulances were arriving.
It was all a grim replay of the violence in 1998 which happened before and after England's 1998 World Cup tie with Tunisia in Marseille.
Then, scores of people were hurt, more than 100 were arrested or deported and some England supporters were later jailed.
England fans in loud voice in Marseille ahead of Euro 2016
Into the spirit: It did not take the travelling party long to let their hair down at the coastal resort in southern France
By the early hours today, police had blocked off roads around the Old Port, using dogs and vans to stop traffic getting through.
Meanwhile, gangs of local thugs could be seen taunting England fans who were trying to get back to hotels.
British football fans are risking an unprecedented security threat in France this week – from hooliganism and terrorism.
It follows warnings from a range of security agencies, ranging from the U.S. State Department to French police that Islamic State terrorists are planning to strike.
Marseille commander Laurent Nunez said the Three Lions 'opening match against Russia on Saturday was also 'a particularly high risk' as fire as football-related violence was concerned.
France remains under a State of Emergency following last November's attack, with thousands of soldiers joining police on the streets.
On Sunday, French President Francois Hollande said that the threat of trouble would not stop the European Championships from being successful.
Mr Hollande said a 90,000-strong security force, including soldiers, would ensure the matches being played in 10 cities will be safe.
The England team are due to arrive in Marseille on Friday, and will stay in a city hotel before Saturday's game.
Some 70,000 England fans – many without tickets – are expected to be in the city over the weekend.

I wonder if there will be a truce between Russian and English hooligans to deal with the lovely people of North Marseille. :hmm:
I look forward to watching England go out in the Q/Fs to Germany in penalites.

Man it will be nice this afternoon when we actually have some matches to discuss in this trainwreck.

A trainwreck would be dramatic. Hence, somewhat entertaining. Actually, I expect a boring opener with a French victory over a defending Romanian side.
Only one game today at 21 CET/19 UT.
I was just saying all the news I am getting so far is the endless labor strikes involving this tournament. And now Marseilles hooligan fighting. I want to hear about glorious French victories outside of labor negotiations and street brawls.

Don't know, we have a mixture of long term veterans and newcomers in the national team at the moment. 4 of the Top 10 playes in terms of caps in Spanish football history are in the team at the moment (Casillas, Ramos, Iniesta and Cesc, all of them over 100 caps, with Casillas topping the list at 167), and by the time the competition will be over it will be 5, as Silva will surely overtake Puyol and maybe Raúl as well. At the same time we have almost half the team with less than 10 caps. So maybe Spain has the most total caps and Germany the most average caps?
Germany has a slightly lower average than Spain (41 to 43 caps) but a much higher median (46 to 15). Germany could field an entire team of 50+ caps players, Spain has just 8.

Hopefully Serbia. Bastards.
:D
I would like to point out, that this, namely that Hungary is playing in a Euro finals, has not happened before in my lifetime.
Realistically, going down with dignity in this match, or miracling to a draw is all we can hope for. But I just can't stop hoping that we might... we just might...

L.
So apparently Austria is seen as many as an outsider. This is their starting 11:
Østrig: Almer, Klein, Dragovic, Hinteregger, Fuchs, Baumgartlinger, Alaba, Harnik, Junuzovic, Arnautovic, Janko.
Of those I've only heard of Fuchs before. I am officially: out of the loop. :(
Aparantly even during the Austro-Hungarian Empire they actually were two separate national teams so there never actually was an Austria-Hungary team :weep:

Really? Not even Alaba? I know a couple more from FM (Dragovic, playing for Barcelona in my current game, Arnautovic and Harnik also ring a bell) but that's it.

Well, no. Ronaldo is a special kind of twat. Together with Pepe
This square football post (pun intended!) is more for Mongers (very rugged region though).
Despite the tie I actually enjoyed the trip to Saint-Étienne. In smaller cities, in "Middle" France (173,00 in the centre 500,000 with suburbs), big tournament are a huge event. Can't escape from the EURO there, even grannies were talking about how it was the first time Iceland made it to the EURO tournament. Not the case in Paris.
Lots of polite volunteers, retired in majority I'd say, saying hello or bonjour all the time (stalkers? :tinfoil:). UEFA is too poor to pay them I guess  For some reason, the volunteers keep talking to me in English first :hmm: Before, I switched to French bien sûr.
It's a city with an industrial culture if not past, so Tyr might enjoy it too were he not such a francophone. :PAfter all, there's a COAL mine museum. :D
For the gun nuts and/or Yanks, FAMAS comes from there (Fusil d'Assaut MAnufacture Saint-Étienne). Once Capital of l'arme, du cycle et du ruban (weapons, cycles and ribbon i.e textile). Tries to be design capital now.
Saint-Étienne is also home of one of the biggest French clubs in the '70s, ASSE (Platini played there), still plays in a very nice stadium, in the city centre, more central than the Parc des Princes in Paris. Even up in the terraces one is not far from the pitch, like the Parc des Princes in Paris, unlike that abomination of Stade de France, much bigger yes but not so well designed.
Stadium is within walking distance of the central station, 30 min or so on foot (not obese-friendly I'll grant you that) but there's the tram too, the oldest in activity in France.
Cheap housing from what I could see, thanks to deindustrialisation. :(
Lots of Icelanders, many families, more than I suspected. More Icelanders than Portuguese in the fan zone. In the stadium, no surprise, more Portuguese as it could be heard during the anthems.
As for the game, well played by Iceland. Goalkeeper should have been booked for losing time but the referee (Bloody Turk was more like an Englishman) was not very good but he was not decisive. Portugal has no true number 9, as always. :( If Quaresma was not wounded, why wait so long (76th min) to make him play? :frusty:
Very good first 10 minutes for Iceland though with a great save by Rui Patricio. Then good counters. And Vieirinha left an unmarked Bjanarsson in the box.
On a last note, the Austria-Hungary game should have taken place there: Saint-Étienne = Sankt Stephan/Szent István. :nerd:
I hate it when players say "the opposition was playing like it was a final." Well yeah.
I remember Steve Gerrard said the same thing about an England opponent, Tunisia or Algeria or something some two world cups ago when England was held to a draw and he said "They were playing like it was the World Cup final." Well, maybe if England did too, they would have won.

I know how you must feel, I used to be very ambivalent about the Danish team when we had the bulldogs Tøfting and Graversen playing it the midfield, two of the most unsympathetic people in football.

Obviously you have not been watching much football. Schumacher in '82, now is the most horrible person.
If we speak about Pepe, why don't you mention Müller? Thing is Pepe, did not misbehave last night, he tends to do that for Real Madrid where he's protected by referees. Something Ronaldo should remember as well who could be more humble but also Zlatan could use some of it and so on...

Well, England and Wales tied means Lens might survive. Smallest city to host an Euro stadium 32,000 less than the stadium capacity (38,000).
Former mine city (Tyr!), like Saint-Étienne but poorer. Nevertheless, the ambient must be even better during match days.

Sure, but saying they've beat the tabloids with refinement, culture and dignity is like having footballers beat a bunch of sumo wrestlers. They're not even playing the same game.
Both are talking about football though. :P
Italy - Sweden is really dull. It's all midfield without any side managing to get inside the box unless it's a lucky long ball. Zlatan has had some brilliant touches though.

Iceland has the same population of Corpus Christi. Maybe Corpus should have its own team. Probably would at least be better than Canada.

Yes I don't know what black sorcery Lars Lagerbäck employs on the team but it definitely works. :hmm: Being an Iceland fan used to mean having to have the mental fortitude to withstand 3-0 losses to, say, Liechtenstein.

Croatia - Portugal is the only game I've been able to watch today. I'm hugely disappointed. :zzz
The other two weren't much better.
Yeah. It's the only one I haven't been watching (I say watching but wasn't paying much attention to the other two). They were dull.
I'm pondering Is this is modern football?
I've been reading a book on the history of football tactics and various paradigm shifts. I wonder if we are entering another, overly defensive, one?
After all. The analytics incredibly show posession is unimportant and the more defensive teams win.
But it's clear to see that it's not just Pepe who's a giant dick, many of his teammates are dicks too.

0 shots on target from any team. Has Ronaldo touched the ball yet? This might be the most boring game I've ever seen.

This is a discussion I hear every second year at least, butu usally there is at least one successful team somewhere that triggers such discussions. Yet we continue enjoying the game and having great matches.
I think organised defense is now easier to learn and practice than effective offense, at the very least finishing an offense. It is bound to change and shift as it always has.
This game is making me doubt football will ever be fun again.

I missed the Portugal game. I thought the first half was fairly even. But you are right, in the second the pace of Belgium was too much for the Hungarians. But still enjoyable. I think that when soccer is played like that it is the best spectator sport going. :)

AFAIK the lacking qualifications of coaches in England has been an issue for a while, as very few of them are licenced through UEFA. It's been part of the discussion on the failings of the English national team for a good 5-10 years or so.

That really highlights the advantage Iceland had in the match. While outnumbered 164-1 in population, they are only outnumbered 12-1 in licensed coaches. As I understand from watching the movie 300, those are good odds for any Greek. I'm sure that also holds true for Vikings.
Good article about how Iceland has built it's team over the past couple years: https://sports.vice.com/en_us/article/how-icelands-two-managers-built-its-greatest-team-ever
I didn't realize the team has TWO managers, not one manager and one assistant, like everyone else. That's pretty cool.

QuoteAfter the biggest humiliation in England's history after last Friday, the English national team announced that they didn't want to rush things before their departure. Despite their loss against Iceland the country wants to continue playing at the Euros and slowly withdraw from the tournament in the coming two years.
The English coach showed himself to be diplomatic after their loss. "We acknowledge our exit. We expect it to take place under a new head coach who will be appointed until October. Furthermore UEFA has to await an official request according to article 50.
The end result struck the British island hard and unexpected. Many football players feel misled:"We didn't knew, that you'd lose if you let the ball into the net goal", said star footballer Wayne Rooney. In a petition 100.000 Britons demanded a reschedulingof the match.
Some Britons however found themselves in an optimistic mood. "At first glance it looks like a big loss for England" says right-wing populist Nigel Farage. "But I see a great victory for the little man over the arrogant Elite. We got our country back and are finally on our own."
The Rating agencies however came out less optimistic. Moody's striped the country of its AAA rating and downgraded it to a HAHAHA.
God fucking dammit.
YAY POLAND!

So Portugal is no longer boring and defensive? Keep going, butthurt squad!
PS: this is almost comical given all the xenophobic stuff directed at Portugal, not necessarily in Languish though. ;)
You have to admit as an outsider it is pretty hard to like a team with Pepe and Ronaldo in it, that also fail to win a single game, plays the most boring matches of the tournament (minus the one against Hungary) and yet finds itself in the semis.
Wrong. Game won against Croatia (1-0 remember?) Portugal used to lose games this way. Could it be the reason of the butt hurt? People like their clichés.
Where does this rule of 90 min only to win comes from? :hmm: also, vs Poland in the penalty kicks.
Most Boring games? Portugal-Iceland was far from boring. Well, it's not like the other teams really made an effort, namely Austria, Hungary being the exception for 60 min or so, Portugal had a lot of shots. The other games most boring? Did you watch France-Switzerland, England Slovakia ? Not to mention a penalty "forgotten" by the referee against Poland and so on. Croatia was supposed to completely destroy a weak defense as "shown" by the Hungary-Portugal game, best Ronaldo (overcooked by this RM time) game yet. Did the the so-called outsider forget it too?
Besides, "most boring games" should please you and remind you of great Mourinho times at Chelsky. :P
As for Pepe and Ronaldo we have been through this before. Haters gonna hate. Giroud and Müller are far worse and draw no objection. In the big ego area, Zlatan is pretty good though he's not as mean as the previous two. In the mean time, Pepe did again a hell of match. Plus football is a team sport, so there are players like Renato Sanches, youngest player to score at the Euro, beating the record of some guy called Cristiano Ronaldo ;) and a very good save by Rui Patricio.
As for "outsiders", well band-wagoning, fair weather and sport history-ignoring fans plus some people in the French press seem to be pretty pissed off. Fearing Italia '82? That's a bit exaggerated IMO.
Quote from: Duque de Bragança on July 02, 2016, 10:22:18 AMGiroud and Müller are far worse
We'll probably never agree on that, but we don't have to. Ronaldo is far better than either of those (this we can agree on I think) so of course he's going to draw more objection when he's behaving like a douche.
As for Pepe, he's just out-of-this-world-dickish.

Okay, so Danish ref was asked about this, you can't stop at the ball, but during the run up it is okay to slow down or stop.
I don't like it. You can tell it messed up the goalie. He stuttered to his right when the player stopped.

I agree that now you move the goalposts (pun intended) since you only make arguments by assertion about Pepe whose defensive work in this Euro has been very good. Maybe you should really watch the games of this Euro, as in paying attention, instead of relying on tabloid accounts/fanboy perception and/or (old) Real Madrid games.
Btw, butt hurt brigade: did Germany win Saturday game or not? :P Remember, 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes.
I say they won
Pepe has been a solid defender this Euro, sure. But he's in the same league as muller I'd say, perhaps a bit more useful for his team, but the difference is not at all as significant as with Ronaldo . He's also more dickish. Muller might look like more of an idiot when he's being a dick though, I'll give you that.
Not really, Müller has been a disappointment (except for being a dick) for his team so far in this tournament so no comparison. But then Pepe and him do not play in the same position.
We're making some progress though. ;)

And they still have a reasonable amount for the semi, just a day less than Germany.
Well that was because they played that opening match before everybody else. I guess by that logic the whole tournament was also rigged in Romania's favor.
Which would be fair to say... if it wasn't obvious France are much better than romania and more likely to finish where they did.
The calendar is always rigged in favor of the host nation, and it is by design. UEFA/FIFA want the host nation to go deep in the tournament since it provides better atmosphere in the stadiums.
It's not a big deal, anyhow. Didn't help Brazil much last time around, for example.

In theory yes. Except the French fans did not provide much atmosphere in the stadia or in the tournament cities. They only woke up last night in Paris for instance.

Can only listen to the game, but it's been boring so far. BBC commentators keep calling it "cagey" which I guess is just another word for boring.
"I almost miss Northern Ireland and Ukraine, goddamnit that first half was boring" - Danish pundit.
But the Duke will probably tell me that it's just butt hurt. :P
Might this be the first time Portugal win a game during the official 90 minutes?
Looks like it.
Wonderful header there. 2nd goal not as pretty.
Oh well...bye, bye Wales... :(

Relax, Müller is out of the tournament.
There was a pretty good article about Ronaldo vs. Messi in a Danish newspaper: "You're hating the wrong guy". Basically they wondered about the reason people loves the tax dodging Messi and hate Ronaldo and if it really shouldn't be the other way around.
This tournament Ronaldo might have flopped, might have cried over invisible free kicks, but he has had penalties committed against him that wasn't called, he did have enough of a mind about him to include an adventurous ballboy in a photo. And apparently he's quite philanthropical.
Well, I'm still on team France. :P :frog:
It's the attitude that's the matter with Ronaldo. Even though it's fully deserved.
As I say, so much to admire but so little to like.

The only people who like Cristiano Ronaldo are the supporters of the team he plays for. He is supremely annoying to anyone else. They only won one game in regular time in the entire tournament, they have never really been convincing. But they won.
I am happy for Ronaldo. Heart of a true competitor and a real champion. This should settle the argument that he is the greatest player of this generation, better than that tax fraud and weak-willed Messi. :nelson:

this wasn't a great tournament, and I don't think Portugal was any worse than any other team ( but I may be biased :p ). People just don't like Ronaldo.
This has been a very poor tournament and it's fitting that Portugal win it.
Congrats Portugal, I'm glad at least it didn't go to penalties.
France will have more opportunities to win big tournaments, and this was possibly Portugal's last chance to win one, so I'm kinda happy for them. :)

I am happy for Ronaldo. Heart of a true competitor and a real champion. This should settle the argument that he is the greatest player of this generation, better than that tax fraud and weak-willed Messi. :nelson:
Yes! I an really happy for him
Ronaldo is like that big dumb kid who was inexplicably the best player on your U11 team so he always wanted to be at the center of everything. Watching his reactions today was hilarious and made the game a lot more enjoyable. Good for him and I'm genuinely happy he's won a major international trophy. Something Messi will never do
Also, everyone on TV seems be hating on Portugal for playing defensively and on the counter the whole tournament. These same people lauded Leicester City during their run to the Premier League title, playing a defensive, counterattacking style game. :hmm: TV commentators are really shit aren't they
Yeah, the Danish commentators agreed that the only thing worth watching in this final post-Ronaldo was sideline-Ronaldo's enthusiasm.
I didn't consider this possibility.
But portugal win and ronaldo doesn't win?
Actually a pretty agreeable outcome

he was like a big kid. I laughed when he pushed Guerrero pack into the field. For all the bitching people do that he's a selfish player you can see that he really wanted the team to win with or without him

For those that complain about the Portuguese playstyle: yes, I would have prefered to win in 2004, at home, but after that loss I (and I guess most Portuguese) will take them as they came. :)
 Até que enfim! Foi quase em casa : 1 millhão e picos de Portugueses, luso-descendentes, bi-nacionais etc. e perto de Paris e Île-de-France, antigamente terceira cidade de Portugal :)
What a dreadfully boring game.
Congrats Portos! I can't say it's well deserved but might as well win this one since you guys got so many heartbreaking losses over the years.
So this final will be remembered for the Moth(TM) and Ronaldo finally winning. And Ronaldo hitting the player next to him's thigh instead of his own...
So Ronaldo. Gignac will probably also remember the woodwork for a long time, but for everybody else it's all Ronaldo.
I hope all goes well in the celebration in the Champs-Élysées but i would not bet it. I'm still going there.
PS: Koscielny did not deserve that yellow card; that's a bad referee playing compensation. Now Payet... He started so well the tournament for France but will be remembered for that infamy.
:nerd: Finishing this Panini Euro 2016 album will be easier now. :)
Éder has been the butt of so many jokes in the past years, it's a great revenge for him.
I hope Mono is not too sad, it's a great strike at the status quo. ;)

I don't really think Payet's foul was that bad, a free kick could've been called, but his attack on Ronaldo was legitimate even if it was hard, he went for the ball and Ronaldo was slow to protect it.

france spent the first few minutes running everyone over. Did he intentionally tkae out his knee? I don't think so. Was he trying to rough up Ronaldo? Of course he was. Injuring him with a "clean" hit and no booking was just a bonus.

International finals are more often than not pretty dreary affairs. The pity is this one comes on the back of a pretty boring tournament. Only memorable thing from this Euro has been Iceland's giantkilling imho.
Yes, this will be remembered as the tournament where small teams exceded expectations and big teams were rather underhelming.
Plus the end of the curses: Germany losing against Italy, France losing in semi-finals against Germany, Portugal losing against France. Last but not least, winning an international tournament, at long last, icing on the cake.

You probably heard of it back then. It's called strike mostly in the French press "grève du bus" because they would not leave the bus.
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2010/jun/20/france-raymond-domenech-nicolas-anelka (https://www.theguardian.com/football/2010/jun/20/france-raymond-domenech-nicolas-anelka)
QuoteRaymond Domenech suffered the ultimate humiliation at the hands of his players as strikes, rows, resignations and recriminations left the French in disarray on one of the darkest days in the country's football history.
Domenech's impotence was laid bare in extraordinary fashion after his players refused to train at their scheduled afternoon session, in protest at the French Football Federation's decision to send home Nicolas Anelka. The Chelsea striker argued with Domenech in the dressing room at half-time in last Thursday's Group A defeat by Mexico, reportedly saying to him: "Go fuck yourself, you son of a whore." After he refused to apologise to Domenech, the FFF expelled him from the squad.
In front of hundreds of fans at what was an open session in Knysna, France's players began by signing autographs. But once on the pitch, the captain, Patrice Evra, had a row with Robert Duverne, the fitness coach, which resulted in the latter storming off and the players withdrawing to the team bus and pulling shut the curtains. Domenech had to separate Evra and Duverne.
Evra, who had earlier stayed on the bus to talk to Domenech, was seen with a letter, which turned out to be a statement from the players. Incredibly, it fell to Domenech to read it out. The coach seemed to be caught between a rock and a hard place and the scene was described by some commentators as the most unbelievable in the history of Les Bleus.
"All the players without exception want to declare their opposition to the decision taken by the FFF to exclude Nicolas Anelka from the squad," Domenech read. "At the request of the squad, the player in question attempted to have dialogue but his approach was ignored. The FFF has at no time tried to protect the squad. It has made a decision [to send Anelka home] without consulting all the players, on the basis of the facts reported by the press."
The France team director, Jean-Louis Valentin, resigned. "It's a scandal for the French, for the young people here, for the federation and the French team," he said. "They don't want to train. It's unacceptable. As for me, it's over. I'm leaving the federation. I'm sickened and disgusted."
The FFF hit back at the players in a statement that said their actions were "unacceptable". It read: "Contrary to what the players said, this sanction [of Anelka] was taken following a long conversation with the person in the presence of the captain. The FFF apologise to the country for the unacceptable conduct of the players that are representing our country. A federal council shall be convened immediately on the completion of the French team's campaign to draw all the conclusions of the crisis that has been created."
France intend to train tomorrow , most likely behind closed doors, ahead of Tuesday's game against South Africa, in which the players intend to "ensure that France regains its honour". It is unclear whether Domenech will give the team talk. After drawing with Uruguay and losing to Mexico, France need a handsome victory coupled with a favourable result in the Uruguay's match against Mexico if they are to advance to the last 16.
Evra had earlier railed against the "traitor" in the squad's midst, "who told the press what was said" at half-time against Mexico. Duverne denied he was to blame. "I talked to Raymond Domenech on behalf of the players [after the dressing-room row], including Patrice Evra," he said. "I have children and I don't want to be sullied by rumours that I am the traitor." Evra later said that Duverne was not to blame.
Of his argument with Evra, Duverne said: "Patrice Evra came to tell me that the players were not going to participate in training. I was angry because we play a big game in two days and we have no right to destroy our last chance. We are in a difficult situation but it is not impossible."
Domenech had said that he had "left open the possibility" for Anelka to apologise but the player was not prepared to do so. "The decision to exclude him, then, was the right one," Domenech said earlier in the day. "I am sorry for the children for whom the French team represents something. Anelka does not have the right to say such things."
There is widespread anger in France and the day's events not only highlighted the divisions between the FFF and Domenech and the players respectively but they brought to a head the tensions that have dogged the set-up in recent weeks. Domenech, who has been accused of bizarre decision-making, has alienated many players, including Thierry Henry, William Gallas, Florent Malouda and Anelka, and there are clashes between individual members of the squad. Domenech will leave his post after the World Cup, to be replaced by Laurent Blanc.
Eager to look at the images in Dili after todays victory! :)

It feels weird. It was a heartbreaker right there at the end. It was not like I had time during the match to reconcile myself with the defeat and start to move from denial to anger.
So instead I kind of walked around in a daze Saturday afternoon.
But, to be fair, it was not like I expected France to win this tournament going in.
Edit: And by Saturday I meant Sunday. That just shows how much of a daze I was in :P
