This is the 3rd Bale goal that I'm not sure how he managed to actually score. First two was the goalkeepers fault, this one he had a clear shot, but didn't take it until he was out of balance and somehow toe'd it in.

I'm delighted by that Welsh result

Is there no sentiment to merge the British teams?  Seems so logical to me.

No. The entire existence of the UK is based on each country getting its own team.

As for doing things in a rational or logical way that would be deeply offensive to the British character.

Zero sentiment.  The UK does not send a soccer team to the olympics at all (only exception - London 2012) because they would be forced to compete as a unified team.  They'd rather sit out completely than do that.

And even then I think only England and Wales agreed to participate.

The level of misogyny displayed after ZDF had a female commentator for one of the game is both predictable and disturbing.

It really reminds you that there's a segment of the population that hasn't changed in generations. The same people show up during elections where they shout Trump-ish things before they retreat to their part of the country beyond the view of the Capital

I listened to her in the Sweden-Italy game. She was absolutely horrible to listen to.

I love that Russia is last in its group. :D

None at all. All our main sports teams are separate except the England cricket team is England and Wales and rugby has unified Ireland.

Kimmich seems to be a credible successor to Phillip Lahm. He played a really good season at Bayern in defensive midfield, but seems to be really good as right fullback in the national team. :)

I'm seriously questioning the point of the group stages with this situation where a majority of the 3rd place teams get through anyway.

Players from outside England would hardly get a game then.

Plus the British FAs wield huge power, they share half of the control over the rules of the game between themselves.
