Our climate changed a lot over the last 20 years or so. I remember we used to have snow and much much colder winters when I was a kid. Now, we are lucky if it snows at all, and usually if it does, it is in some fucked up time, like February or March (while all the way until January it's relatively warm and rainy).

IIRC that's just when the ice caps melt to a huge degree and dilute the sea.
In which we're all pretty much fucked anyway what with the sea level rises and other nastyness.
And global warming is obviously real. Its silly to say otherwise. What is up for debate is the extent to which man is impacting it (I'd tend towards we are having a bit of a impact on potentially knocking the cycle off the rails).

It would be colder than now but not like the eastern coast of Canada or Siberia. Just having water to the west instead of land moderates temperatures.

In Eastern Massachusetts we had a few inches of snow late last week. It's been cold so the snow is still around, not melted, though rain last night and warmer temps today will probably melt a lot of it. Going to get colder again this week, below freezing, in the 20s F.
A lot of places won't use salt because of nearby wetlands. Sand is more useful there.
I think some places have trucks that instead of dropping sand/salt, the trucks heat and melt snow/ice on the roads? Anyone have those in their area, and how well do they work?

Well of course. After all, snow goes naturally with your Canadian Igloo motif building style anyway. ;)
It's like one of Pharaoh's plagues up here. I have a couple feet in my backyard and the street is all ice. It was a foot of snow in the street that kept getting churned by the 4x4s earlier in the week, but now it's a glacier since a plow came up the street (luxury!). The snow was easier to drive on. :P We tried to go to a party Saturday night and got three blocks before Mrs. MIM was crying to go back home. I was ok, but I nearly got hit three times by other people who couldn't stop their vehicles. Lots of intersections around my house where you have to stop on a downhill slope.
Plus today, we had: freezing fog. Weird. It turns to an ice coating on your windows as you drive through it. 20ft visibility, so it could have been worse. Maybe I'll post some nice snowy pics tonight. The mountains are awesomely covered.

In Edmonton, where cold records were smashed over the weekend with a temperature of -46.1 C on Sunday, readings were predicted to rise to -22 C on Monday, but dip back down overnight for a low of -32 C.
Wind chills were predicted to ease in Edmonton Monday, but northern parts of Alberta were expected to face late-day wind chills as low as -50 C. Environment Canada says at these temperatures, frostbite on exposed skin can occur within minutes.

tempms finally droppe to below 0° here though one can question the time they'll stay there. I doubt it'll be all that long.

Today was around 30F, and I tore up the back roads again. I'm getting my fun in, as I sense a slobberknocker of a storm before the 1st. It has been about 5 years since the last Christmas one.
Great deal of snow here.
I hope it doesn't snow here as I don't have winter tires for my car.
I don't have winter tires either, so I hope there won't be a blizzard. I do have all-season tires that came with my car, but they are universally rated as dismal for snow performance. For a while I thought it was normal for a car to never go straight when it snows.
I have winter tires, and let me tell you I hate those monoriu-minded drivers who dont buy them. Or even worse, they dont buy them because they are way too l33t to be afraid of ice and snow.
Of course these slow to a crawl everytime the road is even slightly slippery, seriously slowing me down. <_<
I also have rear-wheel drive. I hear it goes well with not having winter tires.
My car is leased, I give it back in mid January and I happen to live in the warmest part of German (Southern Rhine valley) at the moment, so I hope I'll get through the winter without needing winter tires.
If it actually snows, I'll not drive anymore of course. That would be stupid. And could be expensive as I think my insurance is void if I drive on snow without winter tires.
My car is leased, and I average about 6,000 miles a year. Buying snow tires is just not economical. If it snows, well, that's what balls are for (or, failing that, tow trucks).
Asoka.
I have all wheel drive, a small SUV. It also has all season tires rated pretty well for snow, and for any vehicle I think it's preferable to have some type of all season tire at least.

When I was growing up in northern Alberta and Saskatchewan, no one I knew had different tires for winter than for summer.
Eek! I just reread the reviews from tirerack.com for my tires, from the owners of my car model. That still doesn't explain why my tires are ranked near the bottom. Even if there is a negative bias in reviews, I see no reason why some tires should evoke more hatred than others due to it.

No, I have all-season tires that apparently only work in some seasons.
Pretty much. All season is really just "above 45 degrees".
For the past 2 years now, in quebec, it's been law to have winter tires between December 15th & March 15th. Non-compliance is a 200 to 300$ fine.
Of course, it only applies to vehicles registered in Quebec.
Despite my bigmouth talk, this morning I nearly drifted into the front of a bus, luckily ABS stopped me in my own lane, even if slightly sideways

Eek! I just reread the reviews from tirerack.com for my tires, from the owners of my car model. The highest rating was 4.5, and the typical review included comments such as "Usafe" and "Very dangerous" when talking about snow performance. I felt much safer when I didn't know how terrible my tires are.
Sheesh DG! Even though you live in the US, you're from Ukraine, part of the land of General Winter! You should know all about snow!! ;)
Besides, can't you just drive an old, surplus T-34 or something? Those won't get stuck on snowy roads.
I just have some sort of all season tires, never worry about it. When the Interstate is closed, I don't drive on it...
Snowing in London. Not enough to settle, but that doesn't mean it won't be enough to stop the trains.

Can't. This is like a central part of the city, built by communists and then entered into the UNESCO register so it can't be modified. Apparently it's the classic socrealism Stalin-era type of architecture.
It looks much less like a communist era picture in summer when the entire area becomes full of outside coffee shop tables, street performance and the like. Now it's pretty much the cultural heart of Warsaw.
Also, the "skeletal" construction to the right is the big scene being built for the Warsaw's official new year's eve celebration. I will have the city's biggest party right under my windows. :bowler:

Snowed today here as well (first time in years). It was already melted by the time I drove to work though. I did not see accidents along the way.
I hate driving when it's cold or rains by the way. Everyone and their mother was driving to work today. Also, whenever there's a mere hint of water on the pavement many people start driving at 25 mph. I cannot go fast enough to avoid red lights if there are idiots in the way.

Funnily enough, today the contrary happened. I was returning from a work trip on a second-class road. I was in no rush, doing the max allowed on straights (100 km/h), slowing on bends and shadow areas since earlier I had seen ice. A moron on a van tried to overtake me unsuccessfully half a dozen times. He just didn't have enough power to do so, even on deserted, long straights. It was getting very silly (and risky on an icy road) and finally on a very long, straight downslope I went down to 60 km/h and he finally made it past me. He got the next exit out ...
Parts of Eastern US are getting snow now, mid Atlantic states. Forecasts I've seen say the amounts are in the one to two foot range (up to half a meter or more). Supposed to hit my area this weekend, and so far it's not clear that we'll get hit overly hard. It may go a bit to the south of us - hopefully the storm does take that track and the heaviest misses us.
Yeah, 50/50 on either getting walloped or getting absolutely nothing. Since I won't get a snow day and do have to do some driving on Sunday I hope for nothing.
Looks like Ohio is going to avoid most of it, with 1-3 inches predicted.

Caligula, Lettuce, Meri, how are things in your neck of the woods? I'm supposed to drive down to Atlanta tomorrow.
Nothing on the ground here yet (it's well above freezing right now, actually), though it's been raining all day. The forecast does say we will get less than an inch of snow tomorrow morning, though.
No rain or anything here, above freezing. There were dark clouds in the north earlier, but nothing materialized.

It was bone dry when I went to bed. Just woke up and the snow's already covered the ground and sticking- we're supposed to get between 15 and 20 inches between today and tomorrow (38 to 50 cm for metrictards).

Sheer hilarity; they haven't really been bothering with plowing the road, so I got to watch a big ol' minivan get stuck in the road right outside. I went into Boston tonight, I'm relieved that we didn't come out of the theater to find the kind of snowy traffic hell that only BOston could produce. I even made it home instead of having to sleep at a friend's house.
At 11:30 pm and no snow yet. I thought it was supposed to hit by now, and is supposed to be fairly fast moving, done by early Sunday morning. But last forecast I saw said over a foot (third of a meter), or more. I'm in one of the harder to be hit areas, or just outside of it.
Plenty of snow everywhere now. No one is even driving where I can see.

There is a thin layer of ice on the street. Great. I might get SUV theater later, with drivers going sideways down the street.
Good thing I threw salt on the driveway last night.
Right now, we're at the most snow we've had in almost 15 years ('95 was our last real blizzard)- my buddy measured it while it was still falling last night and there was already 18 inches on the ground. Looking outside, it's sunny and some of the top is starting to melt, but it looks like just shy of 2 feet on the ground.
Still snowing, but there is almost no accumulation. Seems to have slid right by us. Suck it Southerners!Q
Early this morning I looked out the window, and saw that there was still plenty of snow near my building, and it wasn't cleared away or salted yet. Naturally, I figured it would be fun to drive around, and test the limits of my car and my snow driving abilities. I figured I might learn something, and if I get stuck doing it, I'd rather get stuck 100 feet from my home.
Boy, that was fun. My stability control light was blinking non-stop any time I tried to accelerate or brake. I did almost get stuck once, after which I learned to avoid patches of the road that are covered in a whole foot of snow. Eventually I drove out and did my shopping in near-empty stores, and drove by a couple of people who didn't yet learn the lesson I did. I love it when driving is challenging.
There is a teeny bit of snow on my trees and deck, and like little patches on parts of my lawn. That's it. FUCK ALL Y'ALL BITCHES

We had ca. 10 cm in the city this weekend. Of course it's immediately turned to mud in the streets. And will melt this week, because we'll hit above zeroes again tomorrow and over christmas.
Remains of heavy snowing on Saturday froze to the roads by this morning, so it took some time to get to work, and I had to dig my car INTO snow to snatch the last remaining parking place because the fuckers here did not clear up one of the parking places which is full of snow up to my knees ergo it is not used.
Will have that fucking kind of rain tomorrow which is below freezing point but remains fluid until it touches ground. I HATE ice. I am just not sure wether I hate it more if I walk or if I am in my car.
Did I mention I hate ice?
Still snowing but it's warmer today. Around -3°C after yesterdays -10° and the -15° on saturday. The original forecast had rain for christmas, now it seems there is a chance we have white christmas the first time in years.
Took me two and a half hours to get into work with a combination of mincing along icy pavements, a dead train, a bridge impact (lorry drove into one and engineers had to check it wasn't going to fall on us) and pointts failure (probably frozen).

I don't want to see the sun in winter. It's always low and in your eyes. Especially when there's snow on the ground.
When you only get 5 hours of daylight, even a low sun is better than darkness.

It's getting so cold here old people are dying and more electricity was used yesterday in norway than on any other day in history. British conditions, it's embarrasing. Next they will cancel trains for leaves on the tracks.

-10 on my birthday. Takes a man to live here, a stupid, stupid man.
Happy birfday Slim.
Got up to 16 today, felt delightful. Raging blizzard is supposed to pass through tonight.
-24 in Sweden, end of the world here. I hope it clears up next week, I'm supposed to be flying back.

30 isn't so hot as to be uncomfortable. 20s are quite optimum for summer.
-edit; ah farenheight, forgot about that. Its well hidden these days.
 Too good to be true.
We got another foot of snow (about one third of a meter) over the last weekend. Snowed Saturday and Sunday. Hit mainly southern New England.
We still have had no measurable snowfall this year, but that streak is supposed to end tonight with 3-5 inches. :(

Yep-- unfortunately when it snows everyone panics here. I passed a dude who was doing 45mph in the middle lane on I-471 this morning when there was no accumulation yet. And a co-worker was returning a rental car last night & had to go to 3 gas stations before he was able to get gas (the first was so crowded there was no place to get in line & the second was out of gas).
Thankfully, the wife bought bread & milk a couple days ago so I didn't have to fight the tards just to do my normal grocery shopping.
I NEEDED MY CORN CHIPS.
We have snow overload here as well. And -20. More people died from cold this winter than from the swine flu. :P

Even here where people are accustomed to snow we still get crowds in places like Super Markets before or after a storm, as people stock up for the fear of weeks of being snowed in! But then, depending on the timing of the storm, other people with families may have to get to the store since they don't want to go during the storm.

You think that's bad, Greenup County is so poor they can't (or at least couldn't, back when I lived nearby) afford snow removal equipment, so those jerks always got 3x the snow days we got even though their snow accumulations were usually less.

Actually the weather patterns this year are pretty freaky and pretty consistent with what the theorists of global warming are saying. We had snow in October, then up in November, then snow in early December, then fucking +15 C in mid-December, then heavy snow for two days before Christmas, then everything disappeared for Christmas as the temperature went up above freezing and now dropped again to -20 C with heavy snow.
This kind of weather volatility is one of the alleged symptoms of global warming. Plus, Europe itself will actually get colder as a result of global warming, since melting Northern ice cap will kill Gulfstream, thus giving us the kind of weather people have in Canada.

Snow again. Roads are slippery and most drivers behave as if it was their first day in a car. Still things are only 1/4 as bad as predicted. Had 5 cm of snow in the past 6 hours. I approve of the weather.

All I can tell you is that the roads were a solid sheet of ice, dude. At one point I was on a frozen overpass and it was impossible to go more than like half a mile an hour without fishtailing.
Maybe the roads in the Yukon are all gravel so you still get traction or whatever.

Right, I need a Languish advise.
Today for various reason, my oldest son and I am supposed to drive south to the inlaws, way out in the countryside. We can leave no earlier than 22.
However, they have announced a snow storm right in the area I'm going through, it has started snowing and is suposed to peak right around the time we leave.
I *can* stay home but it will be a hassle regarding the weekend at the inlaws, and because we have lend our house to some friends who expect us out of here.
Now, should I try and brave the storm btw 22-00 with my son of 10 or stay home. I DO have winter tires on, but the car is old. I am experiences in winterdriving so I do not fear the slippery roads, more getting stuck in a snow drift.
The forecast itself say 15 cm of snow, -10 degrees C and 15+ meters per sec of wind.
V
How quickly do they deal with snow in the area? Would it be practical to leave an hour or two later to avoid the worst of it and let the road clearing crews take care of the worst of it?
Don't go speeding.

Its a rotating low pressure zone, been snowing all day there, slowly spreading into my area... the crews are fairly good and I don't expect problems on the main highway, but later on on the smaller roads...
Also the area is reported to be out of salt after 6-8 weeks of constant snow and frost.
The main issue is the drifts due to high winds... earlier, just south of the area affected now got 40-50 cm from the same front and have high winds
V
EDIT, ordinarily about 75 minutes. Dont worry I wont speed, but I fear gettin stuck on low cleareance of my car
I wouldn't go V. It's coming down quite heavy and there's lots of wind, there are reports that they need to employ the national guard (ATVs) to assist.
On top of that they're running short on salt (so they're skipping smaller roads) and Denmark has never nor will ever be properly equipped to clear roads in due time.

It doesn't get cold that far south. When it snows, it melts on the ground and then eventually freezes as it piles up.

Its so cold here the door to the washing room froze up after I'd been inside for 5 minutes. I had to heel kick the lock to open it....
And again on the way back...violence didn't work this time and I had to go home and boil some water to melt it open.
I felt like I was in some post-apocolyptic laundry adventure, the laundry room had some vague mechanical hums but was otherwise dead and in the dark and I was there on a mission, get in, get the supplies, get out. And watch out for mutants.

QuoteAccumulation rates as high as 2 to 3 inches an hour were expected to bury the region in up to 2 feet of snow by daybreak Saturday. If the forecasters are right, another 5 to 9 inches of snow is possible before the precipitation ends Saturday evening, with total accumulations of 20 to 30 inches, or more, predicted.

Snow-weary region expects second wallop
(CNN) -- As the mid-Atlantic region tried to dig itself out of a record-setting blizzard, a second weather system promised to dump more snow this week.
Federal workers in Washington were asked to stay home Monday except for emergency employees. Students in some schools in the nation's capital also got a snow day.
Many residents who spent the weekend gleefully making snowmen and hurling snowballs grumbled as they painfully shoveled hip-high snow from driveways.
"The streets are pretty well covered," Kingsley Barreto said about his Gaithersburg, Maryland, subdivision.
"No cars coming in or out of here. Hopefully everyone in the community has enough supplies to last them for a little while, because it doesn't look like we're going anywhere anytime soon," Barreto said Sunday in a post he submitted to iReport.
Crews worked around the clock to clear roads and repair power lines, warning that it might take days to restore electricity to some customers from Pennsylvania to Virginia.
A record 32.4 inches of snow fell on Washington's Dulles International Airport over two days, breaking a January 7-8, 1996, record of 23.2 inches.
Two of Dulles' four runways were open Monday morning, and officials said they hoped to have a third open later Monday, said Courtney Mickalonis of the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority.
The situation there is "getting back to normal," Mickalonis said.
But airport officials asked travelers not to go there without confirmed flights.
Reagan National Airport was scheduled to reopen Monday morning, with flights resuming on a limited basis, the airport authority said. Travelers were urged to check with airlines on flight schedules before heading to the airport.
Are you there? Share your winter weather photos, video
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport was open Monday with limited service, spokesman Jonathan Dean said.
One of the two runways opened Sunday night, and some flights landed, Dean said. However, airport authorities anticipate carrier delays and cancellations because of the backlog.
Airport crews were dealing with a refreeze from overnight, but officials aim to have both runways open by the end of Monday.
Amtrak said it canceled several trains Sunday after downed trees and power lines fell on its tracks. Dozens of Greyhound routes in Middle Atlantic States also were canceled, the company said on its Web site. And officials across the region advised drivers to stay off slick roads.
Making matters worse, a new weather system loomed overhead, the National Weather Service said.
As early as Tuesday, it is expected to bring more than 5 inches of snow and winds up to 25 mph in the Washington and Baltimore region.
"Everybody's just trying to clean up and get a little bit ahead of the game before the next round comes," said Michelle Timberlake who lives on a farm in Boyce, Virginia, west of Washington.
The interior designer found herself running through a mountain of snow when about 40 cows escaped from a pasture on her husband's farm in search of food and shelter.
"This was not what I imagined for myself," Timberlake said Sunday, laughing about the experience.
The blizzard of '96.
Snowed for about 5 hours over here today.
But the ground was damp and the air temperature was too high, so virtually none of it settled.
I have higher hopes for later in the week.

Old. but good:
Diary of a Snow Shoveler...
December 8 - 6:00 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!
December 9 - We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.
December 12 - The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. l don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.
December 14 - Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.
December 15 - 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.
December 16 - Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, Which I think was very cruel.
December 17 - Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.
December 20 - Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Goddamn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow
blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.
December 22 - Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white shit fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss. By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the asshole is lying.
December 23 - Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts!!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.
December 24 - 6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snow plow I'll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish
shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the goddamn snowplow.
December 25 - Merry fucking Christmas! 20 more inches of the god damn slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow!
Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think shes a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wondeful Life" one mor time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.
December 26 - Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.
December 27 - Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze, plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me 1,400 to replace all my pipes.
December 28 - Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. THE BITCH is driving me crazy!!!
December 29 - 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?
December 30 - Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver he is now suing me for a million dollars not only the beating I gave him but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass. The wife went home to her mother. 9" predicted.
December 31 - I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.
January 8 - Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?
QuoteCrews have about 180,000 tons of salt left from the seasonal stockpile of about 350,000 tons.
We got about 4" to 6" last night. And we haven't been hit yet with the big forecast (10" to 20") today.

Well, I've been bitching about the snow because I had to shovel my longass driveway yesterday, but that's only like the third time I've had to do it since I've moved down here. Our snowfall total for the entire winter so far is probably 7 inches, and for us winter is nearly over (normal high temps this time of year are almost 50 F).
The northeast: not fit for human habitation. :)

QuoteWASHINGTON - A section of the roof and a wall at part of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum Support Center in Maryland has collapsed, though no artifacts are thought to be damaged.
The collapse was discovered early Wednesday at the Garber Facility in Suitland, which houses artifacts from the National Air and Space Museum.
Smithsonian spokeswoman Linda St. Thomas said the collections are safe in a sealed container inside the building.
Emergency officials have told museum staff it's too dangerous to go in and check on the artifacts because the building is unstable.
St. Thomas said the facility includes buildings from the 1950s that were slated for demolition in the coming years. She said items stored at the building are not of high value, though it wasn't clear what collections were inside.

In Alberta you can get freak snowstorms almost every time of year. I've seen one in July for pete's sake.
The snow today is melting as it hits the ground and there's been no meaningful accumulations, but it's still depressing. The forecast has temps going back into the teens by the end of the week though.

Ugh.
So apparently we got up to 30cm (one foot) of snow today. Thankfully I left work early, because my usual 1 hour commute took 2 hours (including picking up the boys from daycare).
Except we didn't go home - we went to get the boys their booster shots and flu shots. After a 2 hour drive they were lots of fun once we start sticking needles in them. <_<
Then we go home, put the boys to bed. Except of course then it's my turn to shovel out the driveway, which has 20-30cm of snow on it. And it's still snowing as I'm going. Once I finished I could have just started over again, the snow was still accumulating.
The drive tomorrow should be lots of fun.

You gonna buy a snow blower now?!

I was 20 minutes late, and already had a colleague speak to the matter to stand it down. Besides, the Accused was later than I was.
I'm thinking about trying to work from home this afternoon. Fuck did that drive just exhaust me.

We still haven't had a substantial accumulation this season, which is a shame, as the first snowfall that hits more than 3" shuts this place down faster than a low orbit EMP blast.

All it takes down here is about a half inch. But we haven't even had a flurry so far this winter. That happened 2 years ago, too--not even a flurry all winter (though, of course, this winter isn't over yet). Last winter, though, we had an unusually high amount of snowfall for the area, so I guess it still averages out.

We had snow problems for that long? :o
We keep getting dumped on with some regularity. The blizzard last Tuesday was unexpectedly weak
(but still a big snowfall), but everyone was completely prepared. This Sunday/Monday, we got hit much harder than during the supposed big blizzard, without near the preparation.
So it's been a slippery mess on the roads all week and the sidewalks have about 20 inches of snow covering. Plus a few inches the other night, and some more coming soon. With very cold temps for here; going down to -9 tonight.
It makes everything so damn difficult and miserable. But at this point in the winter, I feel better -- I'm just starting to accept it as a condition of existence. That at I'll never be warm or see the ground ever again, and that's OK.
Have you gotten your hands on a pair of Yak Trax yet Mihalia?
No -- what are they? (He asks, instead of googling.)
These rubber/steel deals you slip on your shoes to give you traction. Sorta like pedestrian crampons.
A few flurries, a couple inches of snow today. But then starting Saturday or Sunday into Wednesday we're supposed to get snow pretty regular. I don't know yet what the predictions are for amounts of snow, but if the storm hits hard like the weather forecasters are worrying about, we're probably going to be buried for a few days. On top of the three to four feet now, plus the huge snow banks pushed up by the plows, I'm thinking this may wind up being like the blizzard of 1978 where everything came to a stop for a week. No work, school, many stranded people everywhere, a real mess.

They get more cold and snow in the upper Midwestern states. But yeah, there are nicer places weather-wise and such, but I don't usually mind the weather, even as I'm getting older. My brother and his wife spend winters in Florida now, even bought a place last year, and they love it there in winter. They always talk of the many, many people they meet from all over the US and Canada who also spend winters there.
I did see that temps in the west and south are going to be very warm this weekend, while we remain in the deep freeze.
Been snowing here all day. Plus wind gusts up to 90 kph.
It was nice and warm all weekend, but very windy. Didn't even need a jacket on Saturday as temps were in the 60s.

Maybe so, I wouldn't know. I've heard your argument before about the wet/humidity and it may be true, but New England isn't anywhere near humid like the South, so I don't know. I would think then that any northern state bordering the ocean has the same problem as New England states.

I'm not even sure anymore what forecasts say of much snow we're going to get out of this series of storms. We got about six inches over the weekend, and now it's been snowing since probably the early morning hours after midnight sometime and will continue until early evening after dark. Looks like six to eight inches there again and probably more, and certainly more before it ends. Another possible big storm coming in Thursday-Friday.

That's like Seattle. Western Washington is pretty moist/humid, but rarely hot enough to matter. But they're also not prone to the huge weather/snow events that the East Coast gets. A light coating of snow at city level, a few times per winter (which then quickly melts) at most, is the norm. Though sometimes a pretty good snow storm can sneak in.

Had 21 inches during the blizzard, another 12 during last Monday, another 3 inches yesterday, and we have another 6 inches on the ground this morning and more coming.
So it came out to 9.5 inches today, coming out to 12.5 inches for this storm when you count in yesterday's snow.
So that's a total of 45.5 inches in the last few weeks.
I think we had nearly two feet of snow from the last two days storm, at least in some areas. I must have gotten in the range of 15 to 20 inches at least. This is all getting into some serious snow territory now this winter, breaking some records for the Boston area and suburbs. That's on top of the several feet we already had on the ground already. It's a winter wonderland! :)
Already got close to 3 inches on the ground, looks like we're going to exceed the predictions in my town. <_<
They just upped the range. Though at this point anything is too much. Especially on a weekend, when I should be getting a snow day.
Amazing, another big storm, this one is supposed to have nearly hurricane force winds as it intensifies over the ocean. It's snowing now, must be a few inches at least already, and it'll intensify tomorrow. I think the predictions are for at least a foot of snow, and probably more. Today I shoveled two or there feet of snow off the roofs of my sheds. I'm sore just from doing that even though I've been doing a lot of shoveling so figured I was used to it by now.
Sustained, nasty ass winds with major 50mph+ gusts here. Had a nasty squall that dropped a couple inches really fast, turned the highways into Demolition Derby.

QuoteNew Jersey woman found frozen to death near her home
A New Jersey woman was found frozen to death in the snow near her home on Sunday morning, authorities said.
Olivia Benito, 66, had stopped by a neighbor's house for drinks after they left a benefit event at an Elks Club in Lakewood, New Jersey, Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County prosecutor's office, said in a news release.
The neighbor told police that Benito had some alcoholic beverages during the course of the evening, Della Fave said. She left the neighbor's townhouse at about midnight to walk to her home two doors away, he said.
The neighbor said she discovered Benito face down in snow when she went out to clear her car of snow at about 7 a.m. on Sunday, Della Fave said. She was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance personnel, he said.
Police found no outward signs of trauma or foul play but the death remains under investigation, Della Fave said.
The temperature at 7 a.m. on Sunday in the Lakewood area was 10 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Hehe, funny though, right after the first huge blizzard and the streets in the city were a mess, clogged and narrow from the snow, they made sure the Pat's parade route was clear. That may not have gone down well with everyone given all the real priorities needed. Yeah, I just deal with the snow, especially with a 3mile commute to a job with bosses that let us out if the snow gets bad, or tells us just to work from home. This is the main hardship here, we don't get river floods, tornadoes or severe hurricanes like the south and mid west. But really, this amount of snow is getting ridiculous. Mine and my neighbors front yards have snow waist high! It's pretty insane.
Hope you guys don't get so much snow there. That much is a mess and tough to deal with if the communities aren't ready for it.

My brother and his wife spend winters in Florida, and they bought a place last year. They love it here. Nice weather, all kinds of things to do outside in winter while just the opposite here. I'm beginning to maybe consider moving down south or the southwest or something when I retire. :hmm:
I don't think this much snow will fully melt until May or June! No let up to frigid temps through the week. High winds making it especially rugged outside the last couple of days. I think it's going to be a late planting season for my garden this year.
I guarantee you when I retire I'm headed further south. I used to say for sure it'd be Florida, but I'm kind of getting tired of rain and love sunny weather, so in that case Scottsdale looks kind of attractive... :hmm:

This next storm is supposed to be only a few inches to a foot, though the south shore and towards Cape Cod looks to be getting a bit more. The last 60 years of his life, I don't think Robert C. Byrd set foot in WV except to campaign. And he had one of the most secure of secure seats, so he didn't have to campaign much.
Anyway, we actually got some snow overnight, our first of the winter. There was a tiny bit of accumulation, maybe a half inch. Unfortunately, there's like an inch of ice over that.
The latest US snow cover map from The Weather Channel is pretty insane:

Seriously.... 6-12 inches on the ground in Newport News and Fayetteville, Arkansas?
Fayetteville is in the mountains...so there is that.
Yes, but it's still in Arkansas. I realize the Ozarks get some snow annually but is it common to have more than a dusting there? :hmm:

North Texas and Oklahoma get pounding by freezing temperatures and huge amounts of snow every year so I would expect it is not uncommon. Stay away from that part of the country man, brutally hot summers and freezing windy winters.
We can blame all this cold weather on the northern pacific ocean pusing hot weather up the coast of BC/Alaska which is pushing artic air south on the eastern side of the continent.
Apparently.

Dude I have over a foot of snow outside... do you know how rare that is here? Most years, we don't get a foot of snow the entire winter. Hell, this is the first real snowfall we've had all winter this year.
I just spent A LOT of time shoveling.
Ouch, that has to hurt. But what are you guys doing with all our New England snow?! Give it back! ;)
Would if I could.

Yeah, it's been stupidly warm here this winter.
You eastern bastards are stealing all our cold!!!111
I'm still waiting for our government to start construction on that 100,000 foot tall, 10 mile-thick wall I suggested they build along the Canadian border.
OBAMA

That's probably good that you aren't dealing with lots of snow but that has to be a problem for the wildlife? Bears come out of hibernation early affecting their cubs. More insects may survive to breed during the warm months, and a lot less water from snow melt run-off to fill up reservoirs.
I think here with so much snow cover we'll see declines in some wildlife like rabbits and deer, and with birds that don't migrate south in winter.
Yeah that was the one good thing about our insanely cold winter last year... WAY fewer bugs last summer. DIE INSECTS DIE

Yeah, I was only partially joking.
OUr winter has had several warm streaks with temperatures well above freezing. You normally just don't see that kind of weather in central Alberta - things are frozen pretty solid for about three months. Temps then return to -10 to -20, but then it warms up again. We've had the snow, but not sure that it's sticking around as accumulations.

We still have grass sticking out above the snow. Very unusual for here.
yep we are on pace for least snowfall for winter ever.
And after this week, it will almost seem like winter is already over.
I bet we get a 4-foot dump sometime in mid/late April. :P

I went about as north and remote as you can go in Scotland, and it wasn't snowing. In August at least.
I just looked and forecast this morning had snow in Glasgow and Northern England.

Yeah continentals forget that Scotland enjoys a maritime climate.
