Whereas the current administration probably replies, "Huh? What are you asking us for?  "

"The IDF and ISA conducted a precise strike targeting the senior leadership of the Hamas terrorist organization.

Prior to the strike, measures were taken in order to mitigate harm to civilians, including the use of precise munitions and additional intelligence."

Oh, so the IDF can mitigate harm to civilians when it wants to. Weird.

Hedging their bets in case they qualify for the 2034 FIFA World Cup in Saudi-Arabia. :P

Quote from: Iormlund on September 09, 2025, 01:06:48 PMYeah. The really surprising thing is that it took so long.

I'm guessing previous American administrations vetoed such a strike.

Disagree.  There is value in having a place where you can talk to the enemy.  We talked to the Taliban in some Gulf State.

They've said they've been doing that the whole time.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

I think we asked Qatar to let them set up base there so we could talk to them.

What next, air strikes on the Palestinian embassies in Paris and London, when France and UK recognise a Palestinian state?

Is the UK considering giving Hamas an embassy?

Isn't Qatar a heavy sponsor of the Muslim brotherhood, of which Hamas is a part, and thus not really neutral?

(Given that the brotherhood is an enemy of civilization)

Syt

Sure, but the US have a military base with a few thousand troops there, so diplomacy may be a bit delicate around that (not that the Trump regime cares much or could handle it deftly).

Remember that stuff about Netanyahu giving Hamas money?  It was the Israelis letting Qatar donate money for Gazan reconstruction that they suspected would go to Hamas.  I just hope those that keep making the claim that Israel funded Hamas are understanding when the Israelis are much more strict about money going into Gaza in the future.  They asked for it.

Quote from: Grey Fox on September 09, 2025, 11:26:12 AMHamas leaders, especially those outside of Gaza, don't deserve mercy.

The issue here is less hitting Hamas HQ - if only Israel could stick to hitting Hamas in Gaza there'd be far less of an issue - but launching an attack on a neutral (even "neutral") 3rd country. That's pretty messed up.
That's the risk "neutral" countries take on when harboring terrorists.  It wasn't that controversial of a concept in 2001.

The US asked Qatar to host Hamas back in 2011. Until 2023 Israel supported this too.

Of course Hamas were fine with this because Qatar already had huge leanings in their direction. But let's not pretend this is equivalent to Al Quaida in Afghanistan.
It's like if Russia decided to bomb Sweden- quite a step up from their attacks in the UK and Spain.
