Not many people here will have sympathy, but I am sometimes struck by an absolute trembling hatred for the north. I have a midterm in six hours and all I can think of is damnyankees and the degree to which they are insufferable. Some word or phrase I read (Invariably from Massachusetts, against whom I declare a lifetime intifada) will irritate me past reason, and I will be unable to think objectively, or think of anything else at all.
I really love the South more than anything else. I am trying to serve her here on campus. If I can not do more, it is not from a want of dedication, but due to deficiencies as a servant. Social anxiety and the natural inclination torward leisure and repose any good Southerner must embrace make it hard to be a driven man.
My roommate is sleeping with his girlfriend not twelve feet from me. I have known them both for a long time, and they are my two best friends. That even such people should know such happiness while the South languishes feels wrong. I wish my missus were here- She would understand, and she would become flushed with anger. It really is good not to feel this way alone.
It is not that I think the north is particularly despicable. There could be worse masters; Russia springs to mind. But, it is yankees who have plagued the South since its very inception, no one else. We never should have gone into this union. A handshake is binding with an honest man, but no contract is truly binding with a liar. Damnyankees are dishonest by their nature, a deceptive, avaricious and ambitious people with no concept of honour, and no constitutional restraint could ever be expected to compel them. Our mistake was making a covenent with thieves, and trusting in word of law.
I become so maddeningly incensed every once in awhile, but it has happened recently. Last thursday, there was a civil rights conference, and I attended, because I want to give everyone a fair hearing; I have visited every political conference on campus, even the LGBT alliance stuff. But hearing that man disparage fair Mississippi irked me so. One said that he was still afraid to drive through my beloved state at night; the other, a new york yankee and harvard (of course! massachusetts again!) graduate, spoke of how he did not even speak with the white community of Mississippi in the 1950-60s, instead disrupting their society, leading people to starvation, coercing illiterates, dividing our community, without even so much as a dialogue. He avoided whites absolutely, except to go the courthouse. Contemptible coward! interloper!
I wrote a journal of my thoughts to give to a professor, who asked for a journal on every political event we happened to go to. She is such a noble lady, a french emigre, a rare existing huguenot, who majored in polish studies. I admire her immensely, but I cant help but wonder what she will think of me when she reads it. I handed it in today- she's going to think I am insane, I fear, or a white supremacist. I have tried unsuccessfully to reach out to our coloured community; secession holds little promise to them. I despair of ever getting a meaningful coloured membership in the league of the south, although I will continue to try.

Somebody had to do it.
I like how "Civil Rights" = "Evil Yankeedom"
Please just stop. :glare:
Viking, the South has its sins. We have never had the luxury of believing we were above them; City Upon a Hill thinking is for damnyankees.
I believe the South has an appallingly corrupt justice system, certaintly worse than the north's, even today. There's too much good ole boy nizzerdry. The Sheriff knows the Judge and this trial was over before it started, that sort of thing. Arkansas police senselessly beat to death a convenience store owner I personally knew as a wonderful man when he asked that a man not be hassled by police on his property.
The way the South treated its coloured community was terrible. However, the north used the compulsion of force and pulled the rug out from under my nation against its will, again, and thats despicable. Wrong or not, we have a right to govern our own affairs. In an independent South I promise you i'd champion civil rights. But when yankees speak so evilly of my nation, and they make it a matter of standing by the South or standing for civil rights, there is no choice at all. I am with the South in all things under outside criticism and unlawful overthrow. The north should be allowed to persue whatever grotesque policies its citizens desire; I only wish the South's states the same right.
Yankees are always trying to re-mold the South's in their own image. Their actions in the war amount to a genocide, and they have since made serious efforts (and progress!) in the colonization of the South.
( Also, I am so sick of hearing about 'our' pilgrim forefathers. )
Edit: and another thing! Its the way the South is so reviled! I hate yankees, but millions of northerners scorn us, insult us, look down on us, some even saying they wish we were out of the union, not being worthy of their sight. These people mean that.
You find sentiments like that here, of course, and that's what brought it to mind. That the South remains chained to such a condescending people who are openly hostile to them galls extremely.
I certainly agree that the yankee subset of Americans is despicable.
I'm pretty sure the constitution trumps state law.

Tyr, that is incredible news to everyone I know down here. Nobody is a foaming at the mouth secessionist; the people of Tennessee love their union with a greater intensity than new england ever will or could. However, most have a bad word to say about yankees. Those who do not are too polite, or are idealistic and come from a rural society, never having met one and assuming the criticism is unfair.
Nobody would call themselves a yankee, and all have a clear idea of what it means. Calling them yankees would confuse, amuse, or anger, depending on the disposition of the individual in particular.
If you say "Yankee" in Germany, that is pejorative. However, no one will associate New Yorkers or Harvard graduates with that term, but rather biblethumping pro-military rednecks from the South.

QuoteThe $50 question: Grant or Reagan?
By Alexander Mooney, CNN Political Unit
March 3, 2010 3:05 p.m. EST
(CNN) -- Should Ulysses S. Grant, the legendary Union general and 18th president of the United States, be bumped from his 96-year stint on the $50 bill?
Yes, according to one North Carolina Republican.
Rep. Patrick McHenry announced that he will introduce a measure that would replace Grant's face with Ronald Reagan's, just in time for the 40th president's 100th birthday next February.
"President Reagan was a modern day statesman, whose presidency transformed our nation's political and economic thinking," McHenry said in a statement. "Through both his domestic and international policies he renewed America's self confidence, defeated the Soviets and taught us that each generation must provide opportunity for the next."
McHenry says it's only logical for Reagan to replace Grant on the $50 bill because several historians have ranked Reagan as a much better president than Grant. McHenry specifically cites a 2005 Wall Street Journal survey of scholars who placed Reagan at No. 6 and Grant at No. 29.
"Every generation needs its own heroes," McHenry also said. "One decade into the 21st century, it's time to honor the last great president of the 20th and give President Reagan a place beside Presidents Roosevelt and Kennedy."
Franklin Roosevelt's face currently appears on the dime while John F. Kennedy's image is on the half-dollar.
But not so fast, says Dr. John Marszalek, the executive director and managing editor of the Ulysses S. Grant Association.
Calling him a "beacon" of the 19th century, Marszalek said Grant deserves to keep his prominent spot on America's currency.
"His work in battling against inflation and getting the currency on stable footing opened the way for the economy boom of the late 19th century, Marszalek told CNN. "I don't know why he wouldn't be included, except people forget. It's been a long time."
Marszalek also named a host of other Grant accomplishments, including efforts to promote the rights of freed slaves and native Americans, as well as his post-presidency, two-year tour of the world during which he negotiated the settlement of a dispute between Japan and China.
But the Grant administration was also beset by major scandals -- close to a dozen in all -- which is a primary reason that Grant had difficulty working with Congress and why many modern historians continue to rank the 18th president relatively low.
Still, Marszalek says Grant's death in 1885 was a "national phenomenon" and is "still the biggest funeral any American has had to this day."
Grant supporters can rest easy for now, though -- the future of the legislation is highly in doubt. It would first have to clear the House Financial Services Committee where at least one Democrat is already expressing his opposition to the move.
"History has made its verdict," Rep. Brad Sherman of California told CNN. "Reagan's policies are controversial. Grant was in favor of winning the Civil War and keeping the Union together. The currency is not a place to score cheap political points."
It's not the first time Republican lawmakers have sought to immortalize Reagan's image on American currency. In 2004, Rep. Mark Souder introduced legislation to put Reagan on the dime in place of Roosevelt. Souder dropped the move after Nancy Reagan publicly opposed the measure.
In the years since Reagan's death, GOP lawmakers have also considered, though abandoned, legislation placing Reagan on the $10 bill, in place of Alexander Hamilton, and on the $20 bill, in place of Andrew Jackson.
To be fair, Grant's policies were also controversial.
Still, the currency should probably be inviolate. In this era of style-over-substance politics, where actual, useful legislative accomplishments are all but impossible, if you open that door, you'll never be able to close it. You'll end up with Obama on the hundred, Clinton on the twenty, and Dennis Kucinich on the single.

You are a rare and special flower Lettuce, don't ever change because people cannot understand your brilliance.

To those who think that loving the South is a dramatic statement or attempt to be unique, I wonder if you have anything greater than yourself that you believe in? The South, as a cause is reckoned, is particularly inadequate, but even it gives me an anchor for my life and a persistent worldview. It is good to beleive in a cause and persue it. Religion does that for alot of people, but I know languish is just too intellectual for that.

This is precisely what Money described earlier. Having a belief system in which everything is viewed through the prism of Yankee oppression is exactly what feminazis, Marxists, and countless other groups do. So what if Northerners move South? Southerners move North too if you hadn't noticed. Is that oppression?

Kind of. It's extremely annoying, at the very least.
Southerners do not move north as much as Northerners move South even percentage-wise, nevermind in absolute numbers, where the northern predeliction for colonization becomes more readily apparent.
Entire swathes of the South have ceased to be so; the North can claim nothing of the sort.
Out here in the West, I've no idea what this is all about. :alberta:

We have this technology called the auto mobile. And you know how there are streets in the city? If you keep on them past the city limits they turn into "high ways."
On Sundays I often go down to the turnpike and watch the city folks in their horseless carriages. :)

Religion is a very good world view to adopt. Being a citizen of the USA is a great cause to adopt as yours.
Serious advice - start going to church. I think you might like it. And Jesus Christ is a lot more worthy of your adoration then Jefferson Davis.

The migration of Southern white "hillbillies" to the North and West was definitive in shaping the culture of a lot of American urban life in the 20th century, as it paralleled the Southern black migrations to the same places; L.A./So. Cal (Okies and the Bakersfield country sound [Buck Owens, Merle Haggard]), Chicago, Detroit (not flattering, but a factor in the '43 race riots), Baltimore...

Seriously, Lettuce, if you are going to believe in shit, stick with the South. Once you start believing in invisible superfriends, its hard to figure out where to stop. At least the South assuredly actually existed at some time. If you want a religion like that, try Buddhism. There is a whole "lost cause" drama about that as well, and angsty teens seem to like it.

Given what we know of Lettow and his penchant for traditionalism, I believe it far more likely for him to find what he's looking for in Christianity. It's also much more "southern" an interest then any other faith. If he wishes to look into Buddhism he is welcome to do so, but it doesn't seem quite his style. :)
I attend church services almost every week. My roommate and I alternate lutheran and baptist, the former being his preference and the latter mine, and I go to mass with the missus and her mother, who despairs that her daughter has no interest in the faith. For those who pay particular attention, you might have noticed I have an adoration of Mormonism and the type of people it produces; I envy their culture, and their looney tunes religion has a special place in my heart.
I appreciate the South's inextricable link with religion, and try to uphold Christian morals and standards as well, but I cannot believe in the faith aspect. Even if I could, Lee is a better moral model than any other man I could think of, not excepting Christ. I could never abandon Christianity completely, given the faith Stonewall and Lee placed in it, and even Forrest in the twilight of his life, but the thing I put my trust in is the South, which, as grumbler says, I can at least be sure exists. I am struggling for something real, that endures beyond the life of one person.
That's enough for me, really. I do not have grand aspirations; I just want to raise a Southern family, slightly above average.
But, thank you for your concern. I am not unbalanced or unhappy with my dedication in life. If I come across so in this thread, it is because I was in a dark place last night, and I apologise.
