Title: Playoffs? Don't talk about playoffs. Are you kidding me? NFL Playoff thread.
Post by: katmai on January 03, 2014, 11:37:21 PM
As we are now just few short hours away from first wild card game, here is thread to discuss the upcoming Ice Bowl at Lambeau,  Bungles v Bolts, the Track meet in Philly and Colts v Chiefs.

The ones I'm following are 49ers v. Packers and Eagles v. Saints.  I'd like to see the Packers and the Eagles make it through, but I've got serious doubts:

Let's also not forget the proud Eagles tradition of choking- Philadelphians love to blame Andy Reid, but frankly, the Eagles have historically been staffed by a bunch of prima donnas who are terrible at working together.  This is where we're really going to see how Chip Kelly does with the boys in green, and Vick's whining comments from the past week don't fill me with a ton of hope (seriously, they need to ditch him already; he's as bad as McNabb about injuries- pray he doesn't get a hangnail).

I'd love for Aaron Rogers to cut a swathe of destruction through the playoffs.  If zone read run-first QBs take over the league it's going to destroy it, in my opinion.

It's not a racist thing.  Warren Moon, beautiful pocket passer.  Donovan McNab, pocket passer with giant huevos.

That's why I'm rooting for Seattle to boot it.

On a slightly different note, did anyone else hate the back shoulder pass when it first came out?  I thought it was the ugliest thing ever put on an NFL field.  But then I started to realize what an incredibly hard throw that is to make.  35 yards down field, and you have to lead your reciever, but you have to underthrow the lead by 10 yards.  That's some serious physics going on there.

Look at the playoff QBs....Manning, Brady, Alex Smith, Drew Brees, Andy Dalton, Andrew Luck, Phillip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers--all basically pocket passers.

Pocket passing isn't going away.

I agree, though I'm not sure why run first quaterbacks would destroy the league even if they were as common as Yi feared.  College football seems to do just fine.

That's a young man's game anyway, they'll have to learn to be a pocket passer eventually as they get slow and banged up.

Rooting for the Eagles.

On the Chip Kelly train, nice.

This weekend I am rooting for the

Eagles- always liked the Eagles for some reason, and they have a lot of players I like, and Chip Kelly
49ers - most likely to beat the Seachickens
KC - I like Reid and Alex Smith; they both got raw deals with their former teams and I would like to see them win at least one playoff game this year.
Cincy - They are really the only team I can see beating Denver and NE.  I don't think they will, but none of the other teams in the AFC have a chance in hell.

It's easier to like Chip now that he is coaching a professional team, rather than when he was coaching a college team, but treating it like it was a professional team.

He is just lucky Mike Stoops was nice enough to teach a QB how to play for him... :P

There will always be running QBs in the NFL.  There aren't 32 people capable of being an NFL starting QB around; though I do sometimes wonder how many other border-line HOF QBs there are stocking shelves in a grocery store because they never got a chance.

There are a lot of amazing athletes out there though that can play quarterback decently, and have the ability to run around and make plays.  If you know you won't have a QB that can throw the ball very well, why not try one of those guys?  If you are going to have a guy back there that can't play the position, why not have one who can at least do something, instead of standing there like a statue and getting hit and throwing interceptions.

Running QBs will never be a major factor in the NFL though.  They get hit too many times and thus get hurt too much.  The little gimmick/fad things like the "wildcat" and read/option get figured out pretty quick too.

Saints in, Eagles out.  Field goal at *literally* the last second.  Wish I could say I was surprised, but the Saints have the Eagles way, way outclassed in terms of controlling where they take the ball during a possession.

He can throw the ball fine if it's on a line.  Any kind of lofted ball he's lucky if he gets the same area code.

Hose, have you seen the Niners throw a single fade all season?

Dude is fast as shit though.  That last run that that sealed it he ran right past a backer that was spying him.

Dom Capers seriously needs to go.  This entire season has been a disaster for their defense: injury after injury, sluggish reaction after sluggish reaction.

Of course, this game started with the Packers being retarded.  I think it was, what, the Packers' third possession before Rodgers even attempted a pocket pass?  Running plays over and over again, even though they were hitting brick walls on the Niners.

Either way, de facto father-in-law had a good point at the end of the game: they're so banged up, it would actually have been painful to watch them go on.

I don't think I ever made excuses for Dalton.  Certainly not going to today.  He was the reason the Bengals lost, plain & simple.  He's a fine QB for most games during the regular season but obviously can't step up in critical games when the season is on the line.  He was never going to win a Super Bowl, but just one damned playoff game would be nice.

He hurt himself today as much as he did anyone else.  Winning a couple, or at least one, playoff game would have set him up for a juicy payday.  He'll still get a contract extension, but probably at about half what he would've gotten otherwise.

Bengals have more depth & talent than they've had in ages.  John Clayton says talent-wise they are the best team in the NFL.  But with QBs so important these days, they won't break that glass ceiling with Dalton.  Shitty situation, and not much that can be done in the short term.  No quality veteran talent available that I can see.  Gotta draft a QB in the first round and let him compete for the job.

FWIW, I guess it's public knowledge now but Mike Brown had wanted to draft Kaepernick instead of Dalton but was talked out of it by Gruden and other coaches

Maybe-- and he was talking to a local radio guy here when he said that.  Many other teams have better talent at specific positions, but across all positions (save for QB), the Bengals are pretty near the top.  They just don't have the big names, other than AJ Green.

Sort of.  You thought he sucked all the time, which was only about half right.  Going by his overall numbers, he's an average to above-average QB.  Obviously he's wildly inconsistent, and I'd say an average QB that screws up less often would still have given the team an 11-5 regular season record, and at least a shot at winning that first playoff game.

Jay Gruden has been mentioned as a head coach candidate since after his first year as Bengals offensive coordinator.  Since he got hired so quickly, I do wonder if there were already conversations through third parties the past few weeks leading up to this, even though the Redskins were not allowed to officially talk to him until this week.

But they were both pre-season Super Bowl contenders though.  And didn't Kapernick throw for like 500 yards against GB in the opener?

Anyone with 8 brain cells and who follows the NFL knew those teams Alci named were supposed to be among the best in the league.  The problem is so much changes from week to week in the NFL, much less in the 11 weeks from Alci's "prediction" to the end of the season that it isn't very interesting to me to guess what might happen.

I already gave Alci his props for his bold prediction that the best teams in the NFL would be among the best teams in the league.

I thought so.  I know they were picked to win their division again (no shock there :D) and with Belichick and Brady and an almost guaranteed playoff spot I don't see how they wouldn't be among those teams with a very good shot at the Super Bowl.

EDIT:  They have been decimated by injuries since the season started, but their team going into the year was supposed to be pretty good.

The whole argument began with Neil saying that the AFC was better than the NFC (  he sure called that one ), and I asserted that there were so many low quality teams on both sides that you can't really gauge the NFC based on the Bucs or the AFC based on the Jags, for instance.

This led me to say certain 'quality' teams were worth gauging when using their NFC/AFC record, which SBR was adamantly against, and apparently all of 8 the teams I thought were worth mentioning as quality teams made it into the playoffs.

At any rate, setting aside Alci's conflict with all mankind, this year is a terrible shame.  It always seems like there's a plucky surprise in every Championship game.  This year, it's just a bunch of massive powerhouses.

I think I'll cheer for Seattle, since they've never won a Superbowl.  Mind you, New England has never won a Superbowl without an asterisk, but they're just too reprehensible to cheer for, or even watch.

Disagree, again.  I think the 16 game regular season does a much better job of telling who the better teams are than one random game in January.  Anyone who thinks the 2007 Giants were a better team than the 2007 Patriots is a dumbass.  The Giants were better that game, and they deserved to win and deserved to be called champions, but they were not the best team that year.  I think if those teams played 10 times the Patriots win 6-7 of them, because they were better.

It is the system, and it makes for a very fun playoff when one loss can end your season, but it does not always crown the best team, just the team that won the tournament.

QuoteJudge nixes preliminary approval of $765M NFL case

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A federal judge denied preliminary approval of a $765 million settlement of NFL concussion claims, fearing it may not be enough to cover 20,000 retired players.

U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody asked for more financial information from the parties, a week after players' lawyers filed a detailed payout plan for her review.

''I am primarily concerned that not all retired NFL football players who ultimately receive a qualifying diagnosis or their (families) ... will be paid,'' Brody wrote in a 12-page opinion filed Tuesday morning.

The proposed settlement, negotiated over several months, is designed to last at least 65 years.

The awards would vary based on an ex-player's age and diagnosis. A younger retiree with Lou Gehrig's disease would get $5 million, those with serious dementia cases would get $3 million and an 80-year-old with early dementia would get $25,000.

Some critics have argued that the NFL, with more than $9 billion in annual revenues, was getting away lightly. But the players' lawyers said they will face huge challenges just to get the case to trial. They would have to prove the injuries were linked to the players' NFL service and should not be handled through league arbitration.

Layn R. Phillips, a former federal judge from California hired by Brody to lead settlement negotiations, had called the deal fair.

The NFL would also pay an additional $112 million to the players' lawyers for their fees and expenses, for a total payout of nearly $900 million.

More than 4,500 former players have filed suit, some accusing the league of fraud for its handling of concussions. They include former Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Jim McMahon, who suffers from dementia.

I am shocked that class action lawyers would rather take the certainty of their pay day over actually working for their contingency fee.

Any four teams that are left are the best four.  That's how it works.  I just prefer it when one of the best four is a surprise.

Performance in the regular season is largely a function of what teams can keep their starters healthy for the most games.  Performance in the playoffs is largely a function of who are the best teams at the end of the year.  A game series in football is silly.  Who cares if the Pats built a team that could win a 10 game series.  Did they build a team that could win the big game - no.

I'm a Patriots fan but really don't care for another Brady-Manning match-up. I was cheering for San Diego to win, be something different. But at least the Pats are there for the next playoff game. I know that makes you all very happy!   :P   I never expected them to do so well this year, and I had serious doubts about them getting into the Super Bowl. The strong running game is a surprise even though they had a good running game last year, I didn't expect them to be such a running offense.

And we promoted from within-- Paul Guenther, LB coach, will be the new DC.  I like Paulie G-- he's a generous guy and likes beer.  And he's done well with the linebackers lately.  But Schwartz would've brought some DC experience.

I can't stand 3 of the teams left, and would hate Denver if it weren't for Manning so I guess I want the Broncos to beat someone in the Super Bowl.

Hopefully douche bag Seattle fans get their hearts broken at home this week, while Manning performs a miracle and doesn't fuck up a playoff game.

Then in the Super Bowl Denver avenges Super Bowl XXIV and slap the shit out of the Niners, and Harbaugh completely melts down and beats up the referee getting him expelled from the NFL for life.

Um I don't hate the Seahawks at all.  The Redskins have never really lost it...which is annoying on some level since the owner and the team do not deserve it.  Supporting crap is how you become the Chicago Cubs.

I certainly have nothing against loud and obnoxious fans but a lot people find obnoxious people obnoxious.  The Steelers have always had a loud and passionate fan base with a crazy atmosphere and look how much people hate them.

Seattle designed their stadium to capture noise. It is one thing to have a rowdy crowd making it hard for the opposition to hear, it is another to have architects design a stadium to double or so the noise a crowd produces vs. normal stadiums.

These are the playoffs, and it's Brady and Manning.  Brady usually wins these.

Tom Brady holds decided stats edge over Peyton Manning (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/playoffs/2014/01/15/tom-brady-peyton-manning-head-to-head-recaps/4492167/)

As much as NFL Properties loves Manning, it loves Brady and The Evil One(tm) more.  The League Office will make sure things fall into place the way they want them to.
