I like this:
Quote
Eric Idle promised that sixth Python, the late Graham Chapman, "won't be absent" from the new show.
"We actually have told him we're going to be on and, if there is a God, he'll show up."
Terry Jones can eat shit and die.
Technically he is correct.

I thought he'd just married the fourth, I doubt his first divorce, from Connie cost him that much. I think the 3rd one with this the American psychologist was the killer deal, something like 10-12 million quid and half a million a year ?

You'll probably turn out to be correct in another two or three years time. :D
"You never divorce your 4th wife."
I almost bid on some of Cleese's stuff.
Fuck. If you're going to reunite do more than one show.
Oh well. I'll wait for the DVD I suppose.
Insufficient Graham Chapman.
They did an AMA about this on Reddit yesterday. Highlights:
1) Eric claimed they've already sent Graham's urn into space, so no Graham. Maybe mentions. (that's bad)
2) John and Eric said they're considering repeating the one-off in NYC, depending on how this goes. (that's good)
As I have a day off on Monday, might as well take a shot at getting tickets.
So, I've just registered at the website for the show in the hope of grabbing tickets for the show. :) Anybody else going? Languish meet up for the ocasion? :P
I registered :)

Save I guess the chance of even one Languishite getting a ticket is pretty low, let alone several of us.

Yeah, he's got a million bucks a year in alimony (http://www.contactmusic.com/story/john-cleese-monty-python-reunion-will-pay-alimony_3965529) to just one of them.
Quote
John Cleese: Monty Python reunion will pay alimony
John Cleese admits the upcoming Monty Python reunion will be extra income to help him pay his ex-wife Alyce.
The 74-year-old funnyman is to reunite with the legendary comedy troupe for a one-off show at London's The O2 in London next year and while he insists he isn't doing the lucrative reunion for money, John admits he is in need of the extra income to pay ex-wife Alyce Faye Eichelberger more than £600,000 a year.
John has been trying to pay Alyce nearly £8 million in money and assets over the last four years, following their divorce in 2008, and is obligated to pay her £612,000 annually until 2016.
He told The Sun newspaper: ''I was comfortably off seven years ago and could have probably spent my time writing. But you don't get paid very well for writing.
''I've had to do a lot of stage performances because I needed the money for alimony. I would like to reach the point where I can decide what work I do without even having to consider how much they pay.''
The 'Fawlty Towers' star, who married fourth wife Jennifer Wade in 2012, also admitted his new spouse helped convince him to reunite with his fellow Pythons, Terry Gilliam, 72, Terry Jones, 71, Eric Idle, 70, and Michael Palin, 70, for the stage show after meeting his colleagues over dinner in August.
He told The Sun newspaper: ''All the wives came along and we went for dinner. She adored them - it's a nice sort of family.''

LONDON — Comedy troupe Monty Python said Monday it will extend the run of its stage show, which was unveiled last week.
The show at London's 20,000-seat O2 Arena will now run from July 1 to 5 next year.
The first show sold out within 43.5 seconds, organizers said.
A sixth show is being planned for the Hollywood Bowl in L.A., where the Pythons' performed a live gig in 1980, according to the Daily Mail newspaper.
The Daily Mirror reports that a source has told them the Pythons are also considering a world tour.
The show reunites John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and Terry Jones. The sixth Python, Graham Chapman, died in 1989. Eric Idle said last week that Chapman would "take part" via comedy seance.
A world tour? That sounds pretty rough for guys in their seventies.

Though starting it at the O2 might be a bad omen.

Meh...it can be done. Roger Waters toured The Wall for two years and he's in his 70s. Look at The Stones. Trick is they won't do too much back to back gigs, and days off after travel, etc.
I love Python, but have no interest in going to a show full of material I'd seen a dozen times performed by blokes way past their prime and/or dead who are doing it without any enthusiasm. Seriously, you've be much better off with a DVD of Live at the Holywood Bowl.
The idea of actually flying to anotehr country to watch this bemuses me totally. I assume that folk just want to be able to say "I've seen 'em live". Same goes for all the geriatric rock bands.
Isn't someone smug?

Well, I'm certainly not expecting a show on par with the '70s (or the Spanish Inquisition). But the chemistry may well still be there. And as I wasn't around back then and too young when they last performed it is the next best thing. I already have the DVDs.
As for travelling to another country, it wouldn't be the first time I've used a concert or show as an excuse to spend a few days in London.

Yeah several people posted about how they wanted to go, were trying to purchase tickets and then you come in posting about how laughable people like that are.
Also I don't know how you have missed the idea that you can be smug about not doing things. or rather you are being smug with regards to how superior you are over such idiots.
That's not being smug. If your interpretation were right (and it wasn't), I was being condescending.
And anyway, I just expressed my lack of interest and explained why. I spend lots of money on leisure activities that would bemuse others - like spending significant amounts of money on watching inferior quality football. I wans't laughing at anyone or expressing my superiority over them.

I kinda see what Gups is saying, though, especially with bands. Some of the bands I grew up with or loved as a teen (and still do) are now well into their 50s, and it'd just not be the same as it would be when seeing them in their prime.
One exception would be New Model Army - Justin Sullivan, the lead singer can still go through a 2+ hour set without breaks, with a voice as good as when he was young and enough energy to get the crowd going (at least he was a few years ago; he was over 50 at the time, though).
I saw Billy Idol a few years ago performing at Donauinselfest (a free open air festival in June in Vienna). He looked his age, and he took it admittedly slow despite going through a lot of his works from his solo days and his time with the band Generation X. At the same time it seemed like an almost intimate concert despite the massive crowd, because of that introspective mood he created. One of my favorite concerts.
So it really depends on what Monty Python are going for - new material or rehashing the old and familiar (or a mixture of both).

So the 'integrity' of the performer is important ?
If this python get together is solely about the money, it's more likely to suck than if the guys were also genuinely trying to recreate something 'real' ?
I believe that they've already said that they'll do a mix of classic numbers and new stuff, and specifically ruled out doing some of their old material, mostly the ones they're not in any physical shape to perform again. Cleese particulary mentioned the Silly Walks sketch as one they wouldn't be able to do anymore.

Certainly it wont be the same as seeing them live 30 years ago. But it will certainly be better than sitting at home watching a performance from 30 years ago. The live experience can never be captured on a screen.
It looks like they're really going to make an effort to do something new, or 'update' some of their old stuff.
Even though they're well aware most of the fans just want them to regurgitate the old stuff.

Heh, I was a big New Model Army fan back in the day. Saw them live, too. :)
My three favorite live performances of all time are:
1. Santana - well, I was a teen, peaking on LSD, and I'd just met two girls I was having an awesome trip with, so maybe that doesn't count. I still remember them doing this truly awesome version of "soul sacrifice", though. The band, not the girls.
2. Gogol Bordello - just came as a complete surprise to me. A friend of my wife coerced us into going to see "her friend's band", which I had never heard of before and I assumed would suck. They were awesome. After, she got us backstage to hang out with them (it's a long story) which was very odd indeed - as it turned out, she made us go along beasically as chaperones, becaise she was now married. Very strange evening that was.
3. New Model Army - just an awesome, awesome set, full of energy.

Maybe on friday itself is too soon, unless it's for lunch. If not, a saturday meet would indeed be outstanding.

No, just cool that you guys were thinking of a meet up, I didn't get any tickets.
And I wouldn't know what I'd be doing in mid-July until late March/early April, so couldn't definitively commit to anything. :(

Nonsense. There is absolutely nothing smug about the French. If anything they are too humble for the amazing achievements of their glorious nation.

No, 1688 our 'Glorious' revolution was pretty dull and dire, it had to be, it started in West Dorset. :hmm:

In which section were your tickets? 95 pounds was the standard price for most of the upper rafters, except for those higher up which were 80 and those at the very top which was barely 20 something, but I guess that you'd need binoculars to see anything. There were some tickets on the ground floor for the same price but also pretty far back.

Just checked, those are indeed in the same price range than mine. For the day I wanted the only ones in that section were at the back of that area, and I thought that they might be too far away. You'll tell me how it goes. ;)

Quite happy with that, really.
I hope they are wrong, as I am seeing them tomorrow.
It's going to be broadcast live on TV so I can get a much better view that I'd have been able to afford and not have to pay for overpriced beer and pizza at the O2 beforehand.

That's great to hear.
I hope Brazen gets to see them.
A bit more now that I have access to a keyboard.
A great atmosphere in the O2, lots of Gumbies and Spanish Inquisitors around.
Show opens with a short Graham Chapman clip, to roaring applause. Then the guys come out.
It's a very well produced show, although the sound quality was lacking a little. Eric has clearly done most of the work, including a number of musical-like parts. I didn't care much for them, but looks good and I guess it works. Both Jones and Gilliam seemed to be going through the motions at times, Jones needing cue cards on at least two occasions and Gilliam butchering the Gumby flower sketch. But, especially at the end, there was some real chemistry. Palin, Idle and a very hoarse Cleese cracking each other up, going off script a few times, great stuff.
And the encore, of course, Always look on the bright side of life.
Definitely worth a trip to London. :bowler:
I would love to see them. Yes, as that dead parrot sketch gif shows, they've gotten older, and yeah, we're gonna be laughing at jokes I've heard a million times.
But I'd love to see them.
Mal, Tamas, how early should I arrive to the O2 before the show? It starts at 18h, but I guess that I should be there at least one hour ahead of schedule to allow enough time to reach my seat.

It was told to start at 7PM with gates opening at 6PM, we got there just a bit after 6PM, half of the audience didn't bother showing up until around 7:30PM (well, didn't bother leaving the snack shops at least), and the whole thing started just before 8PM.

It was cool. I am a fan but not somebody who knows all their stuff by heart, so I enjoyed it. It is a final farewell and is treated such by everyone.
My only trouble was this half-drunk Scandinavian guy close to me who went into hysterical prolonged laughter after almost every sentence.

Well watched the show (taped) yesterday.
I don't know, I love Python. Can even recite the obscure jokes (Scotland skit anyone?) but this was pretty sad. It all fell pretty flat I thought, watching old men recite their old skits. Maybe I can see being there, but to watch it on DVD, I might as well watch the old series. There were a few moments, for sure, like when they took some digs at themselves..."Have you seen Michael's travel shows. ...(Yawn)" or one judge to the other "Did you do the Cleese divorce?"..."Which one?" the production numbers were lavish (penis/vagina song), and some skits worked better than others (Bruces, Michelangelo, Inquisition) but others (lion tamer, Yorkshire men) did't really go down well.
Pythons were great, above anybody else in their prime, but alas, this is a dead troupe.
apparently this skit was censored out of the live tv broadcast:
