I've never really observed antisemitism in Canada beyond some really dumb young guys repeating things they didn't understand.

Most racism seems to be directed at Indians (both the native and non native variety) in my experience.

I remember being involved in a youth homicide case a bunch of years ago.  Nothing that hit the national, never mind international, news.

Anyways this 16 year old girl killed mom's boyfriend.

It was absolutely comical going through all the witness interviews how many times everyone was asked if boyfriend was molesting the girl, or abusing her.  It's what the police absolutely assumed.

Nope.  He never did anything.

In fact that was the problem (according to the girl)- he lived at the house and never did anything.  He just sat there and she resented him for it.

It all made a kind of sense - but it was nothing that anybody expected right off the bat.

So just wait for the facts to come out.

It's there. I grew up with and around Jewish kids*. It's not as overt or common as some other forms of prejudice.

My best friend growing up convinced his parents to let him go to catholic school with me  lost touch with him after I moved, so as far as I know his parent concern of him converting never came about :P

Hubris must be punished. Severely.

On the shooting case im interested to know how the guns got back in the house after being removed.  The perp sounds like someone who should be on a kind of high danger watchlist.

Why don't we wait until the facts come out?

It's so great to have you back.  :frusty:

I think we can be civil even though I fundamentally disagree that it is a 'stupid culture war online era' position to think that private citizens shouldn't have guns.

Garbon, Sophie's post was not about guns.

BB, there is actually quite a lot of information kniwn about the shooter now. If you go to the link, I posted from the glove and Mail you will see a lengthy article describing her history in great detail. Sophie posted it right after reading that post and that is what she based her observation on.

I'm not sure why you think it is improper to discuss what has been widely reported in a national newspaper. Perhaps you could explain that. Particularly since there will not be a trial, which was example you gave.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

Quote from: Sophie Scholl on February 12, 2026, 06:18:22 PMIn regards to the shooter, I'm betting her dropping out four years prior was probably at least in part connected to coming out as trans/bullying. Presumably she then sought out a new source of community and social contacts online and found... the worst possible influences which exacerbated her existing mental health issues and led to the awful outcome of yesterday.  :(

You know, I could come up with an alternate theory of the case that would run very counter to this.

The shooter was playing video games.  Roblox.  Makes people go crazy.

That is a good example of how it is possible to come up with an alternative theory.  But that does not change the fact that Sophie's post was based on the facts the RCMP have told the public.

Awesome, it's amazing how quickly the Canadian bureaucracy works with a backlog of tens of thousands somehow in the space of six weeks since the implementation of the legislation, the government has created an amazing efficient branch who can process and decide all of those applications in record time!

Do those Reddit posts also by any chance provide the details of the application and a particular any detail details about where the parents of those applicants lived for about three years within Canada?

Yes, it's amazingly fast. Kind of sceptical about it too.

Yes, people are quite forthcoming about their situation.

That doesn't tell me much about how the applicants satisfied the substantial connection test.

I know you for some reason doubt the wording of the legislative amendments themselves, and so here is what the Federal Government website says

Substantial connection
To demonstrate a substantial connection to Canada, the applicant must show that their Canadian parent born or adopted abroad has at least 1,095 days (three years) of cumulative physical presence in Canada before the applicant's birth or adoption.
