Independence minded Alberta has a 9.4 billion deficit. At this rate they're going to see the positives of equalization payments.

Alberta just doesn't make sense to me anymore and I'm getting increasingly concerned they're going to be the rupture in Canada like maga was in America.

Saskatchewan has been doing it since, I think, it became a province.


There is some absurd number in favour of this move, something like 93%. So it's a bit of a surprise it took BC politicians this long, but thankfully this will be the last time we have to adjust our clocks.  I just wish we could've made the move permanent after gaining an hour rather than losing an hour.

As usual, there are people totally against it:

Some business groups denounced the move, however, saying that the Eby government surprised them with the change.
"The unilateral change in time is an unwelcome distraction that will make it more difficult to attract and retain businesses in British Columbia," said Bridgitte Anderson, president and chief executive of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business warned the change will be disruptive.

"Today's announcement will be a surprise to small businesses and comes after a rushed and limited consultation process. While some may be relieved not to change the clocks each year, the lack of coordination with other jurisdictions risks causing confusion and disruption," said Ryan Mitton, CFIB's director of legislative affairs for B.C. "This appears motivated by an attempt to distract from the province's $13-billion deficit, not genuine concern for the impacts of the time change."

I'm glad BC didn't listen to them and moved forward.

Well it'll be a lot better once the rest of the west coast (hopefully follows suit).  It does mean a lot of things get moved later like NhL away games to 8:30.

I looked into this a bit more, and it turns out the legislation in BC was passed in 2019. We've been waiting for the American states on the West Coast to implement their change so that it all could be done in a coordinated way. But times change and trade with the United States is no longer the prime directive and so we're just doing it. Besides, who knows how long it's going to be before the Americans have a functional government again.
