Having been around DSA, the idea that these people are equivalent to right wing militia/extreme is, to be polite, extremely laughable.

QuoteThis popular map of what the regions of the United States call "soft drinks" is bullshit.

People have been citing this map for decades and it's not true, and it wasn't even true back in 2003.

I've lived all over the south and can count on one hand the number of people I've met that would refer to all soft drinks as "cokes." It's certainly not most people. Everyone here calls it soda.

I think people either didn't understand the question or they've heard the "people in the south call all soft drinks 'coke'" thing and they want to represent themselves as doing the "southern" thing even though they don't really do it.

Who of you posted that?

Over the last couple of weeks I've been considering giving up watching and following the news, primarly for my own mental wellbeing.

Any today I came across this 9minute podcast by a well-known British writer/columnist , worth a listen:

Edit:
I'm still considering doing this, but of course we have a serious news crisis going on at the moment. :hmm:

I've gone back to just a handful of "traditional" news sites that I check for what's up in the world, sometimes even just skimming the headlines. I've stopped trawling social media for news updates or "inside views".

I shall have to do something similar or restrict my news reading to Languish!

Alternative, not watch or read any news until say the hour after dinner in the evening?

Happened upon a fun little video report from this summer's Sziget festival when a guy was asking the youth of today about what today's popular euphemisms -almost exclusively derived from Tik Tok- mean. Was a nice confirmation that I am way, way, behind today's lingo. Only ones I knew were "sus" and "cringe".

"Dart" means cigarette.  Heard on the street from kids mooching smokes.

I always just assumed that was Canadian slang.

I cope with it from telling myself this isn't young speak, it's loser speak.
When I was 20 I didnt have a clue about some idiotic subculture terms either and avoided dumb terms where I did know them.

When you were twenty you used lecture us on the difference between Chavs and Chavas.   :P
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

Thanks, you've got a better memory than I do.

I think we were all much hipper to slang when we were young (for me it was a radical time; I was totally gnarly.)
