Title: The Republican National Convention Megathread: Cleveland rocks!

As not to overload the Election thread, and because there's going to be oooooh so much stuff happening in Cleveland HOME OF THE NBA CHAMPION CLEVELAND LEBRONS during the convention, it's going to require its own thread.

QuoteTrump looks to unlikely speakers for convention help
By Jeremy Diamond, CNN
July 3 2016

Denver (CNN) Donald Trump is turning to his family, sports figures and business leaders to fill speaking slots at the Republican National Convention later this month as scores of prominent Republican leaders continue to refuse to line up behind their controversial nominee-to-be.
Trump announced Friday that his wife and children "are all going to be speaking" at the nominating convention that kicks off in just over two weeks. And the real estate mogul has also promised to add sports figures and other non-politicians who are supporting him to the roster of convention speakers, which would set the 2016 convention apart from past conventions packed with current and former elected officials.

The unconventional programming, which Trump has said will include a "winners' night," comes as his campaign and the Republican National Committee are facing an unusual problem unseen in past conventions: a lack of interest in speaking slots from many party elders and rising stars.
Instead of bartering with former primary rivals and the next generation of party leaders jostling for prominent placement in the convention programming, Trump is left watching idly as prominent Republicans tell reporters they have no interest in speaking at the convention or, in some cases, even just attending.

"Everybody normally wants to speak at the convention," said Stuart Stevens, chief strategist to Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential bid who was involved in organizing that year's convention.
A bevy of senators, prominent congressmen and governors have stated that they won't attend the convention, refusals that are particularly pronounced among those facing tight re-election battles in battleground states.
The past two GOP nominees, Romney and Sen. John McCain of Arizona, have also said they won't attend the convention in Cleveland. And several of Trump's GOP rivals, including the host state's governor, John Kasich, also won't take the stage at the convention.
"Trump is the most unpopular politician on the national scene. So the idea that a lot of people aren't dying to appear with him shouldn't be a shock," Stevens said, pointing to Trump's sky-high unfavorable numbers, which have hovered around 60% in the latest polls.
Trump tweeted Saturday morning that there was no shortage of speakers for the convention and that he would soon reveal their names.
"The speakers slots at the Republican Convention are totally filled, with a long waiting list of those that want to speak - Wednesday release," Trump said.

Rather than try and mend fences to woo some of his former rivals and members of Congress who are critical of his candidacy, Trump has entrenched himself and taken again to criticizing many of his fellow Republicans in recent weeks, including threatening to go it alone in the general election if others don't line up behind him.
"We have to have our Republicans either stick together or let me just do it by myself. I'll do very well," Trump said at a recent rally in Atlanta. "Just please be quiet. Don't talk. Please be quiet. Just be quiet to the leaders because they have to get tougher, they have to get sharper, they have to get smarter."
Republican National Committee spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said many of the politicians who have said they won't attend have never participated in a convention and wouldn't necessarily be expected to attend.
Walters added that those up for re-election who won't attend would rather spend time in their districts, "shaking hands of voters," rather than attending the party convention in Cleveland.
Trump will still have a well of prominent supporters and party favorites to pull from, but the campaign is working to line up speakers -- both political and non-political types -- and Trump has been intimately involved in approving and nixing ideas for the convention, a source familiar with the planning told CNN.
Ben Carson, Trump's primary rival turned trusted surrogate, will speak at the convention, another source said.
But the big ticket invitations have been slow to roll in. Trump's call to invite Carson came Thursday -- just over two weeks before the convention kicks off -- and Trump told The New York Times in an interview published Friday that he is still mulling which sports figures to invite and has yet to call them.
A night of speeches from prominent sports figures and business leaders could help the presumptive Republican nominee compensate for his lack of powerhouse Republican speakers and help bolster his outsider image.
The "winners' night" Trump has promised would be jam-packed with sports figures supportive of his candidacy, and he has floated such big names as New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, UFC President Dana White and NASCAR CEO Brian France.
"I'm thinking about getting some of the great sports people I know, who like me a lot," Trump said at a rally in Richmond, Virginia, last month.
"We're thinking about doing something that's different," he said a week later at a Dallas rally.
Trump's daughter, Ivanka, has said that the atypical lineup will make for "a convention unlike any we've ever seen."
"It's not gonna be a ho-hum lineup of the typical politicians," she said in an interview with radio host John Fredericks, the conservative radio host. "It's gonna be a great combination of our great politicians, but also great American businessmen and women and leaders across industry and leaders across really all the sectors, from athletes to coaches and everything in between."
But Trump is facing difficulties lining up speakers even among the non-politicians who support him and whom Trump would like to speak at the convention.
Former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, who supports Trump, said Wednesday Trump called to invite him but said he likely won't attend.
"Giving a speech at a convention isn't really my style," Ditka told the Chicago Tribune.
But Stevens, the former Romney strategist who is deeply critical of Trump, said the convention -- an affair, typically designed to give the nominee a bump in the polls and define political coverage for a week -- won't be a defining moment for the Trump campaign, regardless of its outcome.
That's because the Democratic convention will swoop into the news cycle days after the Republican one wraps up.
"He'll get a little bump and then the Democratic convention will come," Stevens said. "And then the race will reset."

It's going to be a mash-up between Miss Universe and the two-hour finale of The Apprentice.     It's going to be so great!

If there is any of the spirit of lincoln in the current GOP, a healthy chunk of delegates will send a message that Trump can go fuck himself.

Chaos erupts on GOP convention floor after voice vote shuts down Never Trump forces

Anti-Trump delegates wanted a roll call vote on convention rules.

CLEVELAND — Chaos broke out at the Republican National Convention Monday after Republican leaders successfully blocked a recorded roll call vote on the convention rules.

Critics of Donald Trump had attempted to force a roll call vote by all 2,472 of the convention delegates on the proposed rules, which were written last week by a convention committee..

The groups objected to the proposed rules because they require pledged delegates to vote in accordance with the results of their state's primaries and caucuses — a structure that virtually guarantees Trump will claim the party's presidential nomination.

Delegates protest on the floor on the first day of the Republican National Convention on July 18 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

The "never Trump" movement delegates believed they had the signatures they needed to force the recorded vote. Earlier Monday, they'd submitted to the convention secretary what they said were signatures from a majority of delegates from 9 different states or territories: Colorado, Washington state, Utah, Minnesota, Wyoming, Maine, Iowa, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Majorities from 7 states or territories were thought to be enough to force the roll-call vote. But after a voice vote on the convention rules, the presiding official — Rep. Steve Womack — declared the rules approved and attempted to move on.

Chaos erupted on the convention floor, with Trump critics screaming for a recorded vote while Trump supporters chanted "U-S-A" and pro-Trump slogans. Womack left the stage.

Moments later, he returned to call for a second voice vote, after which he again declared the 'ayes' had won and the rules had been approved.

Womack then said that three states had withdrawn their support for the roll call vote, leaving the Trump critics short of the signatures they needed to force the vote. The convention then moved on to approve the party's official platform.

An operative with knowledge of the RNC leadership said they got delegates to withdraw their signatures, saying several delegates had told them that they hadn't understood what they were signing onto.

The anti-Trump delegates had ultimately hoped to get a new set of rules that would "unbind" the delegates, allowing them to vote for whomever they wanted even if they were pledged to him based on the results of their state's primary or caucus rules.

They appeared unlikely to win the roll call vote, but it would have provided a high-profile platform for Trump's critics to display the party's ongoing split over its likely nominee.

Critics blasted the moves to block the roll call vote, and promised to keep fighting.

"You will see more insurgency, because, and I have nothing to do with the fact that people now know that their voices were squelched," said Colorado delegate Kendal Unruh, the founder of the Free the Delegates movement, in a live interview on C-SPAN where she accused party leadership of using "strong-armed tactics."

Unruh continued, "I mean, this is just part of what you don't want to do in a fair process, is you don't want to make sure you use every scenario in order to quell dissent. And I mean, we don't live in a dictatorship, we don't live in a banana republic."

"I have never in all my life, certainly in six years in the United States Senate, prior to that as a lifelong Republican, never seen anything like this," said Utah Sen. Mike Lee, one of the most prominent signatories to the push for a roll call vote. "There is no precedent for this in parliamentary procedure. There is no precedent for this in the rules of the Republicn National Convention. We are now in uncharted territory. Somebody owes us an explanation. I have never seen the chair abandoned like that. They vacated the stage entirely."

Trump Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort talks to reporters on the floor of the Republican National Convention at Quicken Loans Arena, Sunday, July 17, in Cleveland.

"It's coercion masking as unity," Lee said later.

"It may well be the case there were only 9 states that submitted the petition... if that's the case, then it appears we did not satisfy the threshold," Lee continued. "What we were told is there were 10, then 11 states that had in fact signed the petition so that is inconsistent with what we were told by the chair just moments ago, that there were 9."

The Trump campaign and party leaders strongly opposed holding the vote, hoping to present party unity at the convention.

Trump critics had been more bullish earlier Monday: "It's a testament to the strength of this movement," said Dane Waters, an operative with Delegates Unbound, a group supporting the anti-Trump effort.

The group said former New Hampshire Sen. Gordon Humphrey had submitted the signatures to the convention secretary — an exchange that followed after a frantic search to find the secretary before the deadline to submit the signatures. At the time, Never Trump leaders raised concerns that the secretary, Susie Hudson of Vermont, might intentionally avoid them to ensure the effort was defeated.

Not everyone demanding a roll call vote was a Trump critic.

The movement appears to have been the benefit of a furious backlash by conservative delegates against the Trump campaign and GOP leadership.

The activists saw their proposals — many of which were intended to push the party to the right — to reform the party's rules squashed last week by a relentless Trump campaign and Republican National Committee combined effort to fend off significant changes. Virginia delegates Morton Blackwell and Ken Cuccinelli, conservative leaders who had opposed efforts to stymie Trump, joined the effort to help overturn the rules.

Rachael Bade and Nick Gass contributed reporting.

Any truth in that?

QuoteIn a section, Mrs Trump said: "My parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise; that you treat people with respect."

Mrs Obama's speech in 2008 carried the lines: "And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them."

Mrs Trump's speech continued: "[My parents] taught me to show the values and morals in my daily life. That is the lesson that I continue to pass along to our son. And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow, because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

Mrs Obama said: "And Barack Obama and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generations. Because we want our children, and all children in this nation, to know that the only limit to the height of your achievement is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

I think some speech writers will be fired

QuoteFor many years now, Mr. Danny Kaye, who has been my particular idol since childbirth, has been doing a routine about the great Russian director Stanislavsky and the secret of success in the acting profession. And I thought it would be interesting to st... to adapt this idea to the field of mathematics. I always like to make explicit the fact that before I went off not too long ago to fight in the trenches, I was a mathematician by profession. I don't like people to get the idea that I have to do this for a living. I mean, it isn't as though I had to do this, you know, I could be making, oh, 3000 dollars a year just teaching.

Be that as it may, some of you may have had occasion to run into mathematicians and to wonder therefore how they got that way, and here, in partial explanation perhaps, is the story of the great Russian mathematician Nicolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky.*

Who made me the genius I am today,
The mathematician that others all quote?
Who's the professor that made me that way,
The greatest that ever got chalk on his coat?

One man deserves the credit,
One man deserves the blame,
and Nicolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky is his name. Oy!
Nicolai Ivanovich Lobache...

I am never forget the day I first meet the great Lobachevsky.
In one word he told me secret of success in mathematics: Plagiarize!

Plagiarize,
Let no one else's work evade your eyes,
Remember why the good Lord made your eyes,
So don't shade your eyes,
But plagiarize, plagiarize, plagiarize...
Only be sure always to call it please, "research".

And ever since I meet this man my life is not the same,
And Nicolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky is his name. Oy!
Nicolai Ivanovich Lobache...

I am never forget the day I am given first original paper to write. It
was on Analytic and Algebraic Topology of Locally Euclidean Metrization
of Infinitely Differentiable Riemannian Manifold.
Bozhe moi!
This I know from nothing.**
But I think of great Lobachevsky and I get idea - haha!

I have a friend in Minsk,
Who has a friend in Pinsk,
Whose friend in Omsk
Has friend in Tomsk
With friend in Akmolinsk.
His friend in Alexandrovsk
Has friend in Petropavlovsk,
Whose friend somehow
Is solving now
The problem in Dnepropetrovsk.

And when his work is done -
Haha! - begins the fun.
From Dnepropetrovsk
To Petropavlovsk,
By way of Iliysk,
And Novorossiysk,
To Alexandrovsk to Akmolinsk
To Tomsk to Omsk
To Pinsk to Minsk
To me the news will run,
Yes, to me the news will run!

And then I write
By morning, night,
And afternoon,
And pretty soon
My name in Dnepropetrovsk is cursed,
When he finds out I published first!

And who made me a big success
And brought me wealth and fame?
Nicolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky is his name. Oy!
Nicolai Ivanovich Lobache...

I am never forget the day my first book is published.
Every chapter I stole from somewhere else.
Index I copy from old Vladivostok telephone directory.
This book, this book was sensational!***
Pravda - ah, Pravda - Pravda said:
"Jeel beel kara ogoday blyum blocha jeli," ("It stinks").
But Izvestia! Izvestia said:
"Jai, do gudoo sun sai pere shcum," ("It stinks").
Metro-Goldwyn-Moskva bought the movie rights for six million rubles,
Changing title to 'The Eternal Triangle',
With Brigitte Bardot playing part of hypotenuse.****

And who deserves the credit?
And who deserves the blame?
Nicolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky is his name.
Oy!

None of Trump's supporters care;  hell, he doesn't even tell the truth and makes shit up all the time, why not his wife?

QuoteNew Jersey Gov. Chris Christie tried to tamp down the controversy, saying "93 percent of the speech is completely different" from the speech Mrs. Obama delivered. Christie said on NBC's "Today" show that the women "expressed some common thoughts." He did not explain how he arrived at the 93 percent figure.

QuoteOn CNN Tuesday morning, Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort offered an unexpected explanation: No one stole anything.
Manafort on CNN: "Well there is no cribbing of Michelle Obama's speech. These were common words and values and she cares about her family"
Manafort said Mrs. Trump was aware of "how her speech was going to be scrutinized" and said any notion that she picked up portions of Mrs. Obama's convention talk was "just absurd." He also tried to blame Hillary Clinton.
"I mean, this is, once again, an example of when a woman threatens Hillary Clinton, how she seeks out to demean her and take her down," Manafort said. "It's not going to work."

Jesus Christ, what a clown car.

Although the Musicians on Call fundraiser, a nonprofit that brings live and recorded music to the bedsides of patients in healthcare facilities, wasn't officially affiliated with the RNC, the RIAA, who sponsored the charity event, made it clear that the gala was tied to the Donald Trump victory party down the street, and many of those in attendance were members of the Republican Party.

Knowing his audience, Jenkins used the microphone to condemn Republican ideology and perform a set list that refrained from playing any Third Eye Blind hits. At one point, after someone in the audience loudly booed the band, Jenkins responded, "You can boo all you want, but I'm the motherfucking artist up here," Cleveland.com reports.

The one Nineties hit Third Eye Blind did play was "Jumper," a song inspired by the suicide of Jenkins' gay friend. The singer prefaced the performance by telling the crowd, "To love this song is to take into your heart the message and to actually have the feeling to arrive and move forward and not live your life in fear [not] imposing that fear on other people."

I don't think that was the important part. The important parts were "no harm was meant" and "I apologize for the confusion and hysteria [the] mistake has caused."

I mean, what more could people want?
I mean if they were a normal political campaign I'd imagine that the Trump camp would be quite happy that this faux-controversy distracted from the seven shades of batshit that's been going on at the rest of the convention.

But I really don't know....

Stuff like that makes one almost understand what attracts the shallow minded to the Trumpian Republicans.

Thing is, much of this leftish silliness is annoying but basically harmless; while the right-wing populist silliness is downright dangerous.

Apparently this all came out last week, but it was just now on my news aggregator. I guess CWRU has made its residence halls available for out of town police (agencies all over the eastern United States are supplying officers to the convention since the security needs far exceed Cleveland PD's capacity.) This isn't too uncommon for a college to let out residence halls during breaks --it's currently the summer break, so only a small number of courses and university activities are ongoing, colleges often let out residence halls for various camps and other types of events since otherwise that space is basically unused.

From the local Cleveland paper link (http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2016/07/case_western_reserve_under_fir.html)

QuoteCase Western Reserve University will essentially shut down during Republican National Convention

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Case Western Reserve University, under fire by students and faculty for housing police on campus during the Republican National Convention, has decided to hold no classes, summer camps or other activities on campus from July 18-21.

The action, announced late Monday, was taken to ease ongoing concerns over housing 1,700 police officers and 200 members of the Ohio National Guard during the four-day event, especially following last week's deaths of two black men by police in Louisiana and Minnesota and the killing of five Dallas police officers.

President Barbara Snyder held two forums on campus July 6 after students and faculty voiced concerns over housing the police.

Students wanted the university to require the officers to store their weapons off campus, for the officers to stay out of university-owned buildings that aren't their assigned residence halls, and for the university to provide alternative housing for students uncomfortable with the increased police presence.

Snyder sent out a campus-wide email Monday afternoon regarding the forums.

What did the email say?

"The deadly shootings last week in Louisiana, Minnesota and Texas have dramatically intensified our national conversation involving race, law enforcement and the best paths to justice, fairness and safety for all," she wrote.

She wrote that CWRU had agreed to house the officers at Cleveland's request and the city's officers have assisted campus police when needed.

But Snyder admitted that "in answering the city's convention request, we failed to give adequate consideration to the impact the decision would have on members of our community—in particular students staying in residence halls near the buildings housing the officers."

Snyder also apologized for her campus-wide email on June 24 urging everyone to not stereotype all police officers as violent or prejudiced.

"Nevertheless, given the current national context, I regret that I described such behavior as 'profiling,' and that I was not more careful with my language," she wrote Monday.

She wrote that officials were planning to take additional steps to enhance campus safety during the convention.

What else has the university said?

On Monday night CWRU posted an online notice titled "Changes to campus operations during RNC."

"Last week's tragedies have horrified us all and raised profound questions for our country," the notice said. "Amid our shock and grief, we also recognize that our city soon will host the Republican National Convention, an event that is expected to draw dozens of protests—and could see a significant degree of conflict."

Officials decided to reduce on-campus operations during the convention.

"In simplest terms, this decision means that every school and unit has been asked to minimize the number of people on campus, as well as the number of its campus buildings that are open,"  the notice said.

What's the plan for the week of the RNC?

Classes: Will likely be held off-campus.

Camps: Education camps for middle and high school students will not be held on campus.

Staff: Faculty are encouraged not to come to their office. Staff, after consulting with their supervisors, will likely work off-site as well.

Students: Students who live on campus will receive help in finding another place to stay during the convention.

Buildings: The library and Veale athletic and recreation center will be closed but the university center will remain open.

The university will offer counseling and support services and a "safe space" for those who want to express their concerns about housing police on campus and the convention.

What are other colleges doing?

Cleveland State University's campus will be open but classes will not be held on campus.

Cuyahoga Community College will close several buildings near the convention site. Classes at the Metropolitan Campus will be held off-site.

I think in this case it's more a case of people reacting finding a bunch of policemen in their summer residence. Say you're a young non-white dude with strong views about police shootings, you might feel a little stressed out when go from living in a residence where 90% of the units are empty, to one which where 90% of the residences are filled with police.

So the issue - at least as expressed in the article - is not about being comfortable with different views as it is about (some) people being nervous about being around people who can kill them and - based on past history - get away with it.

I doubt a 'safe space' will help the situation much. Not sure counselling would help much either unless said counsellor could get one to tame one's fear by denying the reality of the danger posed by cops.

Counselling could help one tame one's fears by helping one understand why such fears of the police re overblown in this case.

What probably bothers the students more is the increased chance they will get caught in some minor lawbreaking (e.g. smoking pot).  The school should have, and should make sure the students know they have, an agreement with the cops that the cops will ignore petty bullshit while they are guests of Case.

Well you probably are going to have a problem with a college campus in general. Not only do they have lots of University cops but local cops usually take a special interest in college students.

But in any case it is just a few days.

Of course I might mention that white people also get killed by police alot so I don't get the 'non-white' requirement. I get plenty stressed when surrounded by police myself.

But Case's definition of a "safe space" could actually be an actual physical redoubt, considering the number of noodleheads from out of town with their guns, and what with rounds flying near campus already (http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2016/07/no_injuries_after_round_fired.html).

I've actually walked the Cleveland State Campus (I was staying at a nearby hotel when Cleveland hosted the NCAA tourney in like 2006 or so; they played in CSU's arena instead of the Cav's), it's always nice when a dilapidated urban ghetto can build a college for itself.

I mean, this is in bonkers territory.  A lot of things in politics are debatable.  You can debate all day on whether you should raise taxes or lower them etc.  But making mothers hold funerals for fetuses should not be debatable - this shouldn't be considered worthy of discussion in the first place.

lol, the fetus funerals are the easy part.  Imagine being forced to carry to term a fetus with lethal disabilities, and then have to bury it when it dies. :showoff:

Mr Pence does hold interesting views.

Quote
Donald Trump's new running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, holds a few unconventional views, according to The New York Times.

"Time for a quick reality check. Despite the hysteria from the political class and the media, smoking doesn't kill," he wrote on his old Mike Pence for Congress website in 1998, BuzzFeed first reported more than a year ago.

He warned his readers that the Food and Drug Administration's tobacco regulation is an action of "big government," and that a government large "enough to go after smokers is big enough to go after you," Pence said on his website, according to BuzzFeed.

"Global warming is a myth," "[Bill] Clinton must be impeached" for a sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky and "George Washington was a Republican" round out the list of Pence's old op-eds.

Pence, who often says he is "a Christian, conservative and a Republican, in that order" has opposed his party a few times. He refused to support GOP programs like No Child Left Behind and the Medicare prescription drug benefit, according to the Times.
His most contested decision as governor was approving a 2015 law that could have made it easier for religious conservatives to refuse their services to same-sex couples, the newspaper said. The law was ultimately revised.

"Mike sees himself as a champion of a very culturally conservative set of values that represent small-town Middle America. He sees his role as protecting them," Leslie Lenkowsky, who has known the governor for two decades, told the Times.
CNBC has reached out to Pence's office for comment.

http://www.cnbc.com/2016/07/15/mike-pence-donald-trumps-vp-pick-smoking-doesnt-kill.html

I have heard of global warming deniers.  I am not aware that some people still deny that smoking kills, except tobacco companies.

TRUMP: Well, it would be ideal if we could get them all together. And that would be a possibility. But I'm a big fan of the Kurdish forces. At the same time, I think we have a potentially — we could have a potentially very successful relationship with Turkey. And it would be really wonderful if we could put them somehow both together.

SANGER: And what's your diplomatic plan for doing that?

TRUMP: Meetings. If I ever have the opportunity to do it, meaning if I win, we will have meetings, we will have meetings very early on.

QuoteDonald Trump Sets Conditions for Defending NATO Allies Against Attack

By DAVID E. SANGER and MAGGIE HABERMANJULY 20, 2016

CLEVELAND — Donald J. Trump, on the eve of accepting the Republican nomination for president, said Wednesday that if he were elected, he would not pressure Turkey or other authoritarian allies about conducting purges of their political adversaries or cracking down on civil liberties. The United States, he said, has to “fix our own mess” before trying to alter the behavior of other nations.

“I don’t think we have a right to lecture,” Mr. Trump said in a wide-ranging interview in his suite in a downtown hotel here while keeping an eye on television broadcasts from the Republican National Convention. “Look at what is happening in our country,” he said. “How are we going to lecture when people are shooting policemen in cold blood?” (Read the full transcript.)

During a 45-minute conversation, he explicitly raised new questions about his commitment to automatically defend NATO allies if they are attacked, saying he would first look at their contributions to the alliance. Mr. Trump re-emphasized the hard-line nationalist approach that has marked his improbable candidacy, describing how he would force allies to shoulder defense costs that the United States has borne for decades, cancel longstanding treaties he views as unfavorable, and redefine what it means to be a partner of the United States.

He said the rest of the world would learn to adjust to his approach. “I would prefer to be able to continue” existing agreements, he said, but only if allies stopped taking advantage of what he called an era of American largess that was no longer affordable.

Giving a preview of his address to the convention on Thursday night, he said that he would press the theme of “America First,” his rallying cry for the past four months, and that he was prepared to scrap the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada if he could not negotiate radically better terms.

He even called into question whether, as president, he would automatically extend the security guarantees that give the 28 members of NATO the assurance that the full force of the United States military has their back.

For example, asked about Russia’s threatening activities that have unnerved the small Baltic States that are among the more recent entrants into NATO, Mr. Trump said that if Russia attacked them, he would decide whether to come to their aid only after reviewing whether those nations “have fulfilled their obligations to us.”

He added, “If they fulfill their obligations to us, the answer is yes.”

Mr. Trump said he was pleased that the controversy over similarities between passages in a speech by his wife, Melania, to the convention on Monday night and one that Michelle Obama gave eight years ago appeared to be subsiding. “In retrospect,” he said, it would have been better to explain what had happened — that an aide had incorporated the comments — a day earlier.

When asked what he hoped people would take away from the convention, Mr. Trump said, “The fact that I’m very well liked.”

Mr. Trump conceded that his approach to dealing with the United States’ allies and adversaries was radically different from the traditions of the Republican Party — whose candidates, since the end of World War II, have almost all pressed for an internationalist approach in which the United States is the keeper of the peace, the “indispensable nation.”

“This is not 40 years ago,” Mr. Trump said, rejecting comparisons of his approaches to law-and-order issues and global affairs to Richard Nixon’s. Reiterating his threat to pull back United States troops deployed around the world, he said, “We are spending a fortune on military in order to lose $800 billion,” citing what he called America’s trade losses. “That doesn’t sound very smart to me.”

Mr. Trump repeatedly defined American global interests almost purely in economic terms. Its roles as a peacekeeper, as a provider of a nuclear deterrent against adversaries like North Korea, as an advocate of human rights and as a guarantor of allies’ borders were each quickly reduced to questions of economic benefit to the United States.

No presidential candidate in modern times has ordered American priorities that way, and even here, several speakers have called for a far more interventionist policy, more reminiscent of George W. Bush’s party than of Mr. Trump’s.

But Mr. Trump gave no ground, whether the subject was countering North Korea’s missile and nuclear threats or dealing with China in the South China Sea. The forward deployment of American troops abroad, he said, while preferable, was not necessary.

“If we decide we have to defend the United States, we can always deploy” from American soil, Mr. Trump said, “and it will be a lot less expensive.”

Many military experts dispute that view, saying the best place to keep missile defenses against North Korea is in Japan and the Korean Peninsula. Maintaining such bases only in the United States can be more expensive because of the financial support provided by Asian nations.

Mr. Trump’s discussion of the crisis in Turkey was telling, because it unfolded at a moment in which he could plainly imagine himself in the White House, handling an uprising that could threaten a crucial ally in the Middle East. The United States has a major air base at Incirlik in Turkey, where it carries out attacks on the Islamic State and keeps a force of drones and about 50 nuclear weapons.

Mr. Trump had nothing but praise for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the country’s increasingly authoritarian but democratically elected leader. “I give great credit to him for being able to turn that around,” Mr. Trump said of the coup attempt on Friday night. “Some people say that it was staged, you know that,” he said. “I don’t think so.”

Asked if Mr. Erdogan was exploiting the coup attempt to purge his political enemies, Mr. Trump did not call for the Turkish leader to observe the rule of law, or Western standards of justice. “When the world sees how bad the United States is and we start talking about civil liberties, I don’t think we are a very good messenger,” he said.

The Obama administration has refrained from any concrete measures to pressure Turkey, fearing for the stability of a crucial ally in a volatile region. But Secretary of State John F. Kerry has issued several statements urging Mr. Erdogan to follow the rule of law.

Mr. Trump offered no such caution for restraint to Turkey and nations like it. However, his argument about America’s moral authority is not a new one: Russia, China, North Korea and other autocratic nations frequently cite violence and disorder on American streets to justify their own practices, and to make the case that the United States has no standing to criticize them.

Mr. Trump said he was convinced that he could persuade Mr. Erdogan to put more effort into fighting the Islamic State. But the Obama administration has run up, daily, against the reality that the Kurds — among the most effective forces the United States is supporting against the Islamic State — are being attacked by Turkey, which fears they will create a breakaway nation.

Asked how he would solve that problem, Mr. Trump paused, then said: “Meetings.”

Ousting President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, he said, was a far lower priority than fighting the Islamic State — a conclusion the White House has also reached, but has not voiced publicly.

“Assad is a bad man,” Mr. Trump said. “He has done horrible things.” But the Islamic State, he said, poses a far greater threat to the United States.

He said he had consulted two former Republican secretaries of state, James A. Baker III and Henry Kissinger, saying he had gained “a lot of knowledge,” but did not describe any new ideas about national security that they had encouraged him to explore.

Mr. Trump emphatically underscored his willingness to drop out of Nafta unless Mexico and Canada agreed to negotiate new terms that would discourage American companies from moving manufacturing out of the United States. “I would pull out of Nafta in a split second,” he said.

He talked of funding a major military buildup, starting with a modernization of America’s nuclear arsenal. “We have a lot of obsolete weapons,” he said. “We have nuclear that we don’t even know if it works.”

The Obama administration has a major modernization program underway, focused on making the nuclear arsenal more reliable, though it has begun to confront the huge cost of upgrading bombers and submarines. That staggering bill, estimated at $500 billion or more, will land on the desk of the next president.

Mr. Trump used the “America First” slogan in an earlier interview with The New York Times, but on Wednesday he insisted he did not mean it in the way that Charles A. Lindbergh and other isolationists used it before World War II.

“To me, ‘America First’ is a brand-new, modern term,” he said. “I never related it to the past.”

He paused a moment when asked what it meant to him.

“We are going to take care of this country first,” he said, “before we worry about everyone else in the world.”

People vote with their feet, not their mouths.  People from everywhere want to move to the US and get American citizenship.  It gets so bad that enough people want to build a transcontinental wall to stop it.  That they want to risk everything to live among you is a huge sign of respect.

Democrats Abroad sent me this summary of the convention:

QuoteOk, now it's official: Donald Trump is the Republican nominee for President.  If you watched Trump's shamelessly unreal acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention last night, you may be dazed and bewildered from being screamed at for more than an hour about the (wholly imaginary) Dystopian States of America. It's been a week of divisiveness, bigotry and crudity, projecting a vision of an uglier and crueler America.  The only redeeming words spoken were when Melania Trump quoted our wonderful First Lady Michelle Obama – without attribution.

But we can't sit around fretting about the fate of the nation - and the world - under a Trump presidency. As a party we are busy taking our campaign into communities across the country and  around the world. In the coming weeks, we'll have more to say about OUR nominee and HER vision for a better America – and the many other wonderful Democratic candidates running for office across the country.

But for now we invite you to purge the venom and take the ONE WEEK DUMP TRUMP CHALLENGE.

{list of standard election activities/DA enrollment}

We don't expect everyone to do everything in the Dump Trump challenge – at least not in a week.  But if you do, write us at [email protected] and we'll put your name up on our website as a Super Duper Trump Dumper.

QuoteNow let us consider the state of affairs abroad.

Not only have our citizens endured domestic disaster, but they have lived through one international humiliation after another. We all remember the images of our sailors being forced to their knees by their Iranian captors at gunpoint.

This was just prior to the signing of the Iran deal, which gave back to Iran $150 billion and gave us nothing – it will go down in history as one of the worst deals ever made. Another humiliation came when president Obama drew a red line in Syria – and the whole world knew it meant nothing.

In Libya, our consulate – the symbol of American prestige around the globe – was brought down in flames. America is far less safe – and the world is far less stable – than when Obama made the decision to put Hillary Clinton in charge of America's foreign policy.

I am certain it is a decision he truly regrets. Her bad instincts and her bad judgment – something pointed out by Bernie Sanders – are what caused the disasters unfolding today. Let's review the record. In 2009, pre-Hillary, ISIS was not even on the map.

Libya was cooperating. Egypt was peaceful. Iraq was seeing a reduction in violence. Iran was being choked by sanctions. Syria was under control. After four years of Hillary Clinton, what do we have? ISIS has spread across the region, and the world. Libya is in ruins, and our Ambassador and his staff were left helpless to die at the hands of savage killers. Egypt was turned over to the radical Muslim brotherhood, forcing the military to retake control. Iraq is in chaos.

Iran is on the path to nuclear weapons. Syria is engulfed in a civil war and a refugee crisis that now threatens the West. After fifteen years of wars in the Middle East, after trillions of dollars spent and thousands of lives lost, the situation is worse than it has ever been before.

This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction and weakness.
