I think it would be fun to have a Languish Powerball pool. Currently projected at $1.5 billion for tomorrow nights drawing.
Standard office pool - everyone buys in, and winnings divided by the number of shares bought. We would take the cash payout option, I think that is projected around $800 million or something like that.
Only problem is how do we actually buy the tickets. I would be willing to buy tickets from funds sent to me via paypal, but that will (of course) require everyone to trust me not to run off with their cash.
Paypal would however provide a confirmable record of who actually participates, and I would buy the ticket however many we get ($2 per share), and post a pic of it say tomorrow night at 8pm EST or something like that.
We can all get uber rich together!
Fair disclosure: I've already bought ten tickets that are my families that WOULD NOT be part of the pool.
I would kick in for another five or ten for the pool, if we get a few people interested enough to actually send cash to buy tickets.
Just imagine what an awesome story it would be!

Yeah Berkut strikes me as a straight down the line, trustworthy sort of guy.
Of course you could say we can all absolutely trust any of us to not run away with the winnings, because no one here will ever win it or any other significant jackpot. :P

Money sent! 5 shares :)
I'm in for 5 shares.
Years ago when the Massachusetts lottery was in its early years, I went in on an office pool with thirteen other fellow workers. And we actually won the prize! It was great! But back then the lottery we won used fewer numbers so there were more likely to be multiple winners. And that's what we had, thirteen other winning tickets. Fourteen winning tickets and fourteen on our winning ticket.
Our group won nearly three quarters of a million bucks and divided among the fourteen of us it came out to about 33k each, I think if we took a payout. A lot less than what we expected but it was still a lot of fun. A day or two later the company owner said he was really happy for us, but even more happy that there were a lot of winners, else he would have lost many of his programming staff.
We setup a trust and the lottery winnings went into that each year. One of the trustees would then send checks to all of us. It was about $2600 a year for 20 years.
Moneys sent for another five shares :)

The $1.5 billion (estimate) is the amount if you select the payout over 30 years option. If you take the lump sum option, it is something like 60% or something like that (which is what we would be doing).
So that is something like ~$800 million I think is what I heard.

If I won by myself I would take the 30 year option. But as a group, I think a lump sum (even if lower amount) would be easier to handle.

As I understand it even individually, a lump sum is better assuming you're able to secure (and adhere to) decent financial advice.
I've heard that the 30 year option is a bad idea regardless, that if you take the lump sum and invest it, you can pay yourself the yearly amount you would get from the 30 year option forever.
Not sure if that is really true or not.

When I won with the group in work we created a Trust and chose to take the yearly payout for 20 years. The lottery winnings went into the Trust, a tax attorney did the taxes and paperwork, and a check plus the tax paperwork (to be filed with our yearly IRS taxes) were then distributed out to the Trust holders.

QuoteWant to join the Powerball office pool?
You'd better get all the rules down on paper if you don't want to get cheated out of millions.
It's also a good idea to have a designated ticket buyer who keeps track of everyone who has paid into the pool. And the ticket buyer should send copies of the tickets to everyone who chipped in so they can see the numbers.
Basically, it pays to be prepared. Take it from these winners' co-workers -- who learned the hard way:
Americo Lopes
In 2009, Lopes won a MegaMillions jackpot worth $38.5 million with a cash payout of about $24 million. He had bought the ticket as part of a pool with five other construction workers. When he won, he neglected to tell his co-workers. Instead, he asked his boss for extended time off to have foot surgery. His co-workers eventually found out and took him to court. In 2012, a New Jersey court ruled against him and his five -- former -- co-workers each took home about $2 million.
Tonda Dickerson
Dickerson, a former Waffle House waitress in Grand Bay, Alabama, won about $10 million in a Florida lottery in 1999. She had received the ticket from a frequent customer who had given tickets to five restaurant employees. Dickerson was the only one who won. She tried to keep the money for herself but she was taken to court by her co-workers and Edward Seward, the man who bought her the ticket. According to court testimony, Dickerson had promised to split the winnings with her co-workers and to buy Seward a pickup truck if her ticket won. The court acknowledged that the group had a verbal contract. But Dickerson won in the end since gambling is illegal in Alabama, making the contracts unenforceable.
John Piccolo
In 2004, Piccolo won $175,000. He kept the winnings for himself but three co-workers took him to court, claiming his ticket was purchased through an office pool. Piccolo spent about $28,000 -- nearly all of his $43,750 share. A judge froze his accounts so he couldn't spend the rest of the money and the matter was eventually settled before trial.
Stephen Kyle
Kyle, a postal worker, won $175,000 in an Ohio lottery in 2004. He was taken to court by seven co-workers who claimed he'd cheated them out of winnings using a ticket from the office pool. Kyle was ordered by a judge to split the winnings evenly with the 20 other members of the pool, which comes to about $8,750 each.

We need Ed to pitch in. He once won 10K on this. He's lucky when it comes to these things.
I thought verbal contracts were only enforceable up to a small dollar amount, like $500.
Yeah, where is Ed? And I'd like Seedy go in on this too, if we get it he could use a dew bucks.

It's a good point, re: contracts. Could we come up with some sort of text - even simple - that states how we'll deal with it in case we win?
I'm sure we could all be rational and easy going in figuring this out, but then I look at how we discuss things and think it might be better to have some sort of agreed guidelines up front...
So, it seems fair to mention that while I am tracking this here because it is what we all can see, the actual "agreement" is between the people who send me paypal payments, and what is in paypal, which I am trying hard to keep in sync here, is what is the "official" record of who is in the pool.
That is better, since it has actual names of actual people with actual email addresses.

Here is my working assumptions:
Any winnings (and it could be less than a jackpot, I think 3 matches is a minimum win) will be taken as a lump sum payment.
It will then be divided among the participants proportionally to the number of shares they purchased - i.e. someone who bought 5 shares will be get 5/total shares of the total winnings.
Paying taxes or other legal requirements based on wherever you live is on you - division of funds will be based on USD pre-tax.
I will post a picture (and send via email if anyone requests) of the actual ticket(s) I purchase.
The actual "agreement" is between the people who send me paypal payments, and what is in paypal (plus my own contribution) is what is the "official" record of who is in the pool.

Not so.
The rules in NY (where B is?) about this are in the General Obligations Law, 5-701-705. Lotsa fun.
Yeah, once you close the pool maybe send out an email to everyone with the names and number of shares to everyone, followed up by another email with the ticket numbers?
And I assume if we win we do something like the following:
1. Hire a competent tax advisor (simple plurality vote of all participants determines which one to go with if there are competing suggestions on who to get).
2. The competent tax advisor is paid out of the winnings before they are distributed.
3. We take the winnings as a lump sum and distribute them among the participants in proportion to the number of shares they got.
4. Taxes are taken from each individual's share of the winnings.
5. We can change these rules by consensus agreement among the participants.
... something like that?
Whatever the conditions are (perhaps we can debate them ad nauseum here) should probably be sent in the same email chain as the one setting out the number of shares and lottery numbers.
Daaaaamn it seems Paypal needs a couple days verification before accepting my card as a payment method... :( I tried linking my bank account number, but it too needs to be verified. It seems I'll have to skip this pool.
Dunno if being happy because I've spared 10 bucks, or sad because I've lost some millions.
L.
I think the tax advisors will be hired by the individual winners, as the pay-out calculation will be pre-tax.
Taxes are going to be radically different for those in other countries, for example.

Correct, New York. IIRC it basically comes down to I get the money, and I might buy each of you a new Miata or something. If I feel like it.
I trust Berkie to give us our share if we win it. :)
BTW, Toyota for me, no Mazda!
The $500 thing is only for the sale of goods. However, we're not buying any goods from Berkut or (directly) paying him for his services. He would, however, benefit if the pool as a whole were to win the lottery, so there's mutual reliance here, and a court would probably view this as a contract for services. Given that e-mails count as signed statements, I think a court could easily interpret this thread as a contract.

You won the lottery? :showoff:
This lottery syndicate is certainly reinvigorating our membership, judging by the numbers who are viewing the board.

Read one of my previous posts on that. It was what could have been big bucks and I was in a group at work which would have been ok but still not a huge payout, but there were also many other winning tickets besides ours so we got a small payout of about $2600 a year for 20 years.

Current estimate payout is 930 million before taxes.
So if we win, that means it is worth about $7,200,000 per share...
Exactly. After taxes, assuming Languish wins, I'll be sitting on somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-5 million. More than one share is silly.
Not if you buy a share. Well, maybe a couple of shares.

That's neat. :)
I am going to 10 shares. Can't let anyone get more than me!
Jaron comes in with another 4 shares (now 14) and a single share for Fireblade!

If you have a fairly trivial amount of winnings, just let it ride on some subsequent non-billion-dollar lottery.
The overall odds of any one ticket winning are 1 in 25, so we will have about 6 winners.
Those will total, if it is all average, about $25.

So my son, being the devious sort, was trying to figure out how I could screw all of you in some scam.
It was kind of alarming how adamant he was about how I should just keep the money for the tickets, or keep all the money if we won.
He was very upset when I told him I took pictures of the tickets and posted them.
Then he started thinking about how I could just fake pictures, and keep the money, and not buy any tickets at all.
I mentioned that would be kind of a problem if the "fake" pictures had a winning ticket, and he pointed out that the odds of that happening were very small, and probably much smaller than the odds of getting caught stealing in pretty much any other possible fashion.
IE, you take the money, fake up some pics, and run the 1/million chance of actually having to pay out.
I have to say, the little shit is scary devious. He is either going to end up in jail, or an investment banker. Or both.

Or both.
Which begs the question, where does that come from?
It's clearly not from you and no doubt your wife, so where, other children, the wider culture? Capitalism in tooth and claw?
Certainly not his sister, who is a complete sweetheart.
Not me.
That leaves...hhmmmmm.....yeah, I could see that...

All we have to do now is put together a Languish tontine for things to get *really* interesting. :D
Ox?
B, you should be very proud. Your son is welcome here anytime.
Just no more Ricans!
I cannot condone racism but I'm secretly relieved when katmai picks on someone else for a change.
Wait a minute!

Wait so the winning ticket was sold there but did the winner claim it? What happens if they don't?
I could have sworn Reuters was an English language service.
I never understood clerks celebrating they sold a winning lottery number. Do they get a cut or what? :hmm:

People who buy lots of lottery tickets tend to think "ooh, this place sold winning lottery tickets, must be lucky!"
Many of the local convenience stores have signs that say things like "$10,000 Winning Ticket Sold Here".

Video games. And that loud Rock and Roll music all the kids are listening to these days.

Actually, I read an article that says in some states the stores do get a nice chunk of change. I believe it noted 25k.
The guy in Chino who sold the winning jackpot ticket gets $1 million, or so some article I read said...
Yeah, I see that was noted for this particular case. Oh California...

Use the 35$ to buy Powerball tickets for saturday.
I wonder how much those 72k tickets people have made.
One of the winners was in Florida, so maybe they did it.
that guy does look like Apu

I've said before in the context of discussions about the feasibility of a Social Democratic welfare state in this country that it wouldn't work because we are a nation of Scotch-Irish tinker con artists.

Goldman Sachs is his destiny, congratulations. I suggest that you provide whatever encouragement and support to him that is needed :contract:
I had a dream once where I won the powerball. I bought a village in Slovenia and painted FU Jaron on all the roofs so you could find it on google earth. It was weird.

If I win the lottery, none of you will hear about it.

Because Languish won't win.
Well, we know who the Languish Pool shareholders should blame
Yeah. There aren't too many lottery winners around who think that playing lottery is stupid. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned there for the future?
