So does anyone remember how I mentioned coming through Vancouver in early July? No? Good, because plans have changed, and it doesn't look like I'll be able to meet anyone in Vancouver. Too bad - I would have very much liked to have seen Chez Crazy Canuck. :(
But instead it looks like I'll be in Southern Ontario the week of July 13-17, 2009 for training. The training itself is in London I think, but they'll surely have me go through Toronto to get to and from, which sounds like a great excuse to meet people like Malthus, Sasks and HVC.
Is anyone around and willing to meet either the weekend before or after? I'm thinking either Saturday July 11, or Friday July 17, for a few drinks and general languish-style bullshitting.
I wonder if Berry is still coming over Around July 18th.
Sure, I'm up for it.

I will be in Toronto the weekend of July 18-19, flying out of Pearson around 1pm on Sunday. I'm hoping some of you folks would like to meet up with me, otherwise I'll just wander the streets of Toronto...
Anyone have ideas for places to stay in Toronto? The only time I've been I stayed at the Royal York (I think), but since that was on Gowlings tab and now I'm on my own slightly less costly digs are called for. Or does anyone want to volunteer to put me up?

My current plan lands me at Union Station around 8 PM.
When you guys arrive, drop by my place if you like. It is easy to get to if you want to TTC it, as I'm half a block from a subway station (Royal York).
Or conversely we could meet up downtown for drinks and stuff first. Your call. I work right downtown so that is no trouble for me.
Are we talking about meeting up Friday night then? I thought this would be on the actual weekend, like Saturday or something. If we are not getting in until 8 or later Friday night, there is little chance of talking the wife into going out that late. :(

That might not be a bad idea. I pack pretty light, but I do worry whether or not this conference is going to force me to bring a suit (which means a much larger suitcase).
Also, you really don't need to buy me dinner/drinks. I know I don't make a Gowlings Toronto salary, but I can't claim poverty on a lawyer's salary.

Don't laugh so loud - you announced you'll be paying for your own meal, so any punishment delt to me on the score of choosing an inordinately expensive place, you'll get at least part of. :P
Anyway, offer is only good within reason. You guys can pay for your own personal chefs, hundred-dollar fancy steak entrees or full-scale Roman orgies.

That means I would really prefer to stop by Malthus' before meeting up with people, if indeed we get together at all on Friday. The plus is that I should be able to get into Toronto by late afternoon or so.
I'll be there by 5.

It absolutely still is. I have my flights all booked, my accomodation is booked in London.
So even if it's just you and I GF, we'll meet in Toronto. :)
hmm...
If I take the train (and I might as well - sounds like more fun than the bus, and I can meet GF at Union Station) there's a train leaving 12:07, arriving 14:03, or a train leaving 3:47, arriving 5:53.
Somewhere inbetween would have been better, as the first makes it tight to get to the train station from UWO with the conference ending at 11, and the second means poor GF would be waiting an hour for me.
I don't want to speak for Sask HVC & Malthus. But I'm okay with waiting.
Sask has always hinted that he'll meet us at the station. I don't know about the other 2.
I haven't taken a train for almost 20 years.
How early do you need to get to the station before its scheduled departure time?

I've never taken the train.
Via's website says 30min before, 1h if you need to check bags.
it's like catching a bus. you don't need much time, especially if it's carry on luggage. half an hour gives you plenty of time.

Unfortunately I have to bring a large suitcase since I need to bring my suit. <_<
But more importantly are you guys up for meeting Friday night? If I'm on that 5:53pm train I could meet up with GF then head over to wherever we're going - perhaps for 7:30? If the place we meet is close to somewhere I could drop my suitcase off so much the better.

how about this?
Fox and BB meet at Union, take the subway up to Bloor line, change trains then ride west to Royal york stn (near Malthus's house?) where they meet Malthus, drop bags, and then meet me in a local pub of Malthus's choosing around 730. I'll ride over, it's close to me.

Mrs. Malthus probably won't come, because that would involve arranging a baby-sitter for the night, which she prefers not to do.

You have to admit, the name is memorable. :D I suspect it was intended to refer to the "old sod" of home (that is, Ireland), but it definitely has a double meaning.

The Friday Meet and Greet is not really convenient for me; but I'm open for the Saturday All-Day Event. :)

I think the new AGO is a good idea, as none of us have been there. so there's architecture and ... art.
so, just speaking theoretically, all the rest of us meet you at Union on Saturday at 11 am, then we have a mini deathmarch to the AGO, grok art, then hike some more, then find a patio, eat dinner, have more drinks and stuff.
Sounds like a plan. :)

It's the alternative to having a passport when entering the US by land thru the Canadian Border but I guess the Yukon/Alaska border guards don't really care about that.
It's really just a regular licence with an RFID chip.

I went down to Skagway for the 4th of July. The US border guards were like the friendliest ever. They asked if we wanted the fancy stamp they have in our passports, and when we asked what time certain events were he pulled out a 4th of July schedule and gave it to us. :)

Since they're both coming off the train walking down to the main level the easiest for them to meet up is in front of the McDonalds. easy to find.

Sounds good to me.
Sounds like a plan.
Jos, absolutely I'd like to meet up on Saturday. What time would be good for you on Saturday (nothing really early though)?
Sask suggested a theoretical time of 11 am. Does that work for the rest of you? Meet at 11 and then head to the AGO?
I think that could work, but best wait for others to chime in.
Sure, anything's good for me.
I have only 1 plan for the weekend & it's after BB leave & before I take the train home : visit the HHOF.
At Union, infront of a Mcdonalds, alright. I'll be the habs fan getting eckled. ;)

Meh - it's okay. Course material is pretty good. Everyone gets wide eyes when I tell 'em I'm from Yukon. This town sucks if you don't have a car though. Was up till 1:30 last night drinking with a bunch of people from the Newmarket Crown's office, so I'm taking it easy tonight.
I met an older Toronto Crown, he asked where I worked, and where in the past. He was absolutely shocked when I said I used to work in Peace River - he had worked there 20 years ago, and a lot of the lawyers were still the same...
Thats pretty cool.

Government these days is paranoid about seeming "wasteful". So things that would be quite common in a private business are absolutely forbidden. At thie conference one of the speakers was given a gift card as thanks for talking. He mentioned he used to get liquor store gift certificates, but then somebody in government said "no way". The money didn't change, but heaven forbid the government spend money on booze...

Reminds me of a joke Chief Justice McEchern used to make after giving a speech.

Our ingenious system has what is known as the GTC (Government Travel Card), which we are required to use for approved travel expenses. However, it is in our name(thus, our credit history). So, if we run up vast amounts in airline/hotel bills, and our finance office does an "oopsie" and fails to pay us on time (this happens all the time), we are still required to pay. So, if you have a broke lower enlisted, he fails to get compensated in a timely manner, and his personal credit gets trashed...all thanks to Uncle Sam.

Holy crap Beeb you were measuring the size of the guys.... Not sure what .5 means but I assume you meant to mean that they were half your size. I further assume the /size comment beside the hot babe meant that size was important to her. Maybe it was her that measured you all and told you her conclusions.
Whatever happened my perception of you has been changed completely.

I suggested Union Stn. in the morning, 1130 is likely better.
I know my publisher needs me for some last minute work this Saturday. we are negotiating this. we met at a Tibetan style fusion restaurant. Fox and Joe ate Canadian, while the rest of us were more adventurous. I had the "Free Tibet platter", which was dumplings (veggie and pork/spinach), "surrounded by a sea of Chinese Chow Mein."
Unfortunately, they had no boiled Yak or rancid butter on the menu.
Joe has a Brit via Malta type accent, so I will be sure to read his posts differently in the future. And it turns out that despite his being a gentile, he is also part of the Zionist conspiracy.

Absolutely.
After 10-11 hours travelling, I'm back home.
Pics to come tonight - I had to do penance for leaving Mrs. Malthus with Carl while I went and partied with my friends for two days - meaning, no playing on the computer yesterday.
Anyway, I certainly had a great time: the company was the finest and the new Art Gallery of Ontario proved surprisingly good (before the renovations it pretty much sucked). Now I'd recommend it to anyone visiting the city. Of particular note is their collection of antique ship models (no dreadnaughts - we looked), some builder's models, some carved by French prisioners of the Napoleonic wars out of bones fished out of their stew (!).
Anyway, my wife, Carl and I very much enjoyed having BB and Grey Fox over - both are the perfect guests, as they would pretty well have to be to stay in a house with an active 3 1/2 year old. ;) Carl in particular was very happy to see them and after they had gone kept asking yesterday when they were comming back!
The Ago was indeed great. My particular Favourites were the miniature Sword-Gun, and the little sculpture of a skull eating a brain (lactually and apple, but it looks like a brain to me :P )
Thee HHOF was cool too, and i enjoyed going there with GF
Thanks to everyone, it was a very fun weekend.

HVC, Josephus, BB, Grey Fox, in front of the "Martinus Teepee" at the Art Gallery of Ontario (inside the tent was a movie clip of what looked like naked guys frolicking with an Indian Chief - didn't stay to see the whole thing);

Nice pics. But... isn't GF fairly short? ..and if that's the case, do any of the people in the standing shots with him break 6'? Either way, I definitely need to get my ass in gear and be prepared for the next go around, if there is one. Any preliminary plans people?

If I discovered that secret, I'd be selling it. ;)
No, hair is thin on top but not absent, so how bald I look depends on the lighting.

no plans yet, but we get motivated when someone comes to town. we are doubly motivated when two people come to town...
get your license, suggest a future date (say in the Fall?) and it's a probable. :)

I'll probably just get a passport, as it'll be more useful and permanent. sometime in the Fall might work. Anyone else care to weigh in?

We briefly considered the thought of a Languish trip to Ottawa to check out Museum of Civ. and the War Museum. But then the waitress came taking orders and the proposal was instantly forgotten.
Josephus, you look not at all like a swarthy, skulking, knife wielding Maltese.
And so capitalist looking too.

Should I have worn a beret? Beneath that jean jacket (working class wear), I was wearing a shirt that said "Cuba" on it. :)

My first choice would have been a loin cloth, with a knife in your teeth, ready to do battle with Saracens in the sacred waters of the Grand Harbor.

Looks like a good time. That teepee is pretty stylish too, though I'm not sure how practical it is.

It looks like I'll be in Toronto around the 17th of September. Just bought tickets to the U2 show. I am: excited.
