Quote from: HVC on May 12, 2026, 03:11:28 PMDon't forget to do your civic duty and fill out your census fellow Canadians  :contract:
Done for both :)

I lucked out and got the short form. wasn't so lucky on my moms census  . In keeping with the current topic of this thread the short form questionnaire just cared about two things, how well I spoke French and my sexuality.

Also, new maple MAGA trend is to freak out about the census? Hope they all get fined. It's minor, but it's something.
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

Harper had cancelled the obligatory long form for an invasion of privacy, so it's nothing new.

Don't know the fuss about it, really.

I don't think we should encourage people or companies to use AI for legal documents. There there be dragons :P

The federal Canadian government should fund a special AI just for lazy English speaking Canadian governments and companies to translate documents. The AI should be programmed to shame whomever uses it though.

I hope you spell all your French text in larger bolded font, in solidarity

Oui, ça marche.

Well, if you don't care about accuracy, sure. Which is kind of important in contracts. Even the Supreme Court of Canada is struggling with how to deal with translations of its decisions since the French and English versions often end up having subtle but different meanings.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

AI translations for legal documents?  :lmfao: AI struggles beyond the most basic texts, not just legalese.

As opposed to doing no translation at all? Besides the AI would get better if designed to do this exact thing.

Oh, my, I can't tell if you're joking or you really are that out of touch with reality.

You really don't understand the importance of the wording in a contract?

I feel like goal posts are rapidly being moved. We go from it being way too burdensome to translate anything. Ok so here is a way to do it with minimal effort that could be tweaked and improved over time and does not take that much effort from the parties involved. Is it perfect? No but it could be used as a starting point and a basis.

But now I am delusional unless a language scholar with an expert legal degree does it. Ok whatever. Look a ton of these things use boiler plate language, pretty sure that could be easily managed no AI can be trained on that? I think you are intentionally making this seem like an impossible task just to explain away gross incompetence and laziness.

If the "translating" AI is trained by lazy and incompetent Anglos, well, maybe no translation is better.  :P
There won't be any acceptable translation, anyways.

Bad translations are as big an insult as no translations. Worse even since it signals to the other party that their language is so contemptible that you can't even be bothered to make the effort to do it right.

The francofone contempt towards Dutch, especially in Brussels, is legendary.

I have no idea why you're not following this. The original story was about not translating the contractual documents relating to a construction project being put out to tender.

You suggested that AI be used and perhaps you didn't understand the context in which you were making the statement

Although I'm not sure how you missed it given the fact, I specifically addressed that in my post.
