As part of Netflix's 20th anniversary they sent out a "Trip down memory lane" e-mail with the first movie I ever rented from them.  Mine was "Triumph of the Will."

I've... uh... matured a lot since then; anyway did anyone else get an e-mail like that?

Good man.

I own a copy. If you need to borrow mine.

Not a lot of people have movie-reel players these days.

Super-8 version? Nice.  :D

I have it too, on blu-ray though.  :smarty:

Finally got to see Darkest Hour, which was fantastic.

I had to IMDB a couple things though...wasn't sure that Churchill's trip on the Underground was based in fact (apparently it wasn't).

But what I found interesting was this:

Winston Churchill's "We will fight on the beaches" speech in 1940 was not recorded, as the House of Commons was not fitted with recording equipment then. Churchill recorded all his major wartime speeches at his home four years after the war.
Civis Romanus Sum<br /><br />"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world." Jack Layton 1950-2011

Well,it may not have been recorded, but it was certainly written down - Churchill was known for being an excellent orator, and incredibly good at delivering apparently "off the cuff" remarks and comments (even within his prepared speeches) that were in fact carefully practiced and rehearsed.

All of his speeches were written out ahead of time.

I thought Darkest Hour was ok, but it made me wish somebody went and made a movie/show (preferably the latter) about Churchill's exploits *other* than his WWII role. Only the stuff he went through i.e. in WWI with all the ups and downs is a fascinating tale.

But all his best come backs are from the WWII era. Seriously, look up his quotes, they're the best.

I agree, telling the whole story of his life would be interesting but telling a story of Churchill's role in the Bengal famine, being a terrible father along with all his other vices would be greatly at odds with Churchill as WW2 hero.

On Netfux, Hitler's circle of evil. A bunch of episodes on the Nazi bootlickers around ol' crazy eyes.

How is that at odds with that?

Great men are often assholes? That isn't exactly new ground.
