Sex is one meaning but there are other dangers in the world than sexual predators. I think it represents many of the dangers and traps one can fall into when one ventures out in the world.

But since she helps turn this monster into a kind man perhaps it is more explicitly sexual here than it is in other 'girls goes into the woods' stories.

Like G'locks.

There's a reason why there's so many folk stories with little girls getting lost in forests and encountering beasts/witches. Fairy tales, at the core, are metaphors for the experience of growing up. Asserting one's independence, confronting sexuality - and the dangers posed by both - are themes very often encountered in them. Beauty and the Beast is one of the most glaringly obvious ones.

So these folk tales were invented as object lessons for young girls in the right way to lose their cherry?  Or as seduction aids for horny dudes?

The first was the intent, the second was what happenned.

The first one. All fairy tales are morality lessons for young'uns, so they will encompass a variety of themes affecting children, and sex is a big one. That's where the whole "get a Prince Charming" deal comes from (and Beast turns into one at the end).

Speaking of which I really loved 'Little Red Riding Hood' as a kid.

In the version I was told, the Wolf tricks her and then goes to Grandma's and eats Grandma up. Then he dresses up like Grandma and waits for the titular 'girl in woods' to show up. She shows up and immediately notices something is a bit off (all that 'big eyes you have' stuff). The wolf asks her to get into bed with him, she agrees, but comes up with a method of tricking him to escape. It seems like her red cloak came into use somehow I forget. Anyway she tricks the wolf and escapes and goes and gets help.

So I thought it was a story about how you need to have your wits about you. There are con artists and manipulators out there who will try to fuck with you and therefore when things look wrong you should not ignore your instincts.

But recently I saw 'Into the Woods' with my wife, the movie, and in this version the wolf eats both Grandma AND Little Red Riding Hood and then some guy just randomly shows up and cuts the wolf open and somehow both she and Grandma are still alive

I asked my wife about it after the film and it seems this is another popular version of the story. What the lesson is to be learned there I have no idea

Sure it did. People suddenly realized young kids were juicy targets thanks to the invention of folk stories

There is that fetish that consists of a fantasy of being eaten.

Cannibalism porn. 'Oh baby I could just eat your sweet meat right up'

No doubt a thing.

That's the version I have always been told, although I'm familiar with the one you knew.

The meaning is again sexual. A girl wearing RED, encounters a BEAST, with LARGE BODILY PARTS, that TRICKS HER INTO BEDDING HIM. Then a "good man" comes and saves her.

Freud looks at this and says "nah, too easy", before walking away.

Belle "falls in love" with an ugly beast hidden in the forest, rejected and feared by the community she belongs. It's the least subtle metaphor for losing one's virginity outside of wedlock I have ever seen.

Also "uncouth manbeast turns into a wonderful prince once he experiences the love of a woman" for how men change in relationships.

That explains why so many of us are still uncouth manbeasts.

Very little? She has 8 acting credits since 2011, when the Harry Potter saga finished, and meanwhile she has studied English Literature at Brown and became an UN goodwill ambassador. And she's only 26 yet.

Apparently, people have also forgotten that Emma Watson also has a very on-again, off-again relationship with acting.  Went to Brown and dialed it back, then quit Brown to concentrate on acting (-100 points for Gryffindor for that move, IMO ), and as recently as last year, has suggested that she might at least go dormant for a while after Beauty and the Beast.

People were talking about her acting career though, not her other stuff. She hasn't been especially prolific, acting wise.
