Awesome!

My plans to take permanent residence status before Brexit happens, and thus remove myself from the angst of having my entire life here hang on the Tories and Junker brawling it out, are now straight out of the window!

Because Mrs. May is going to introduce a special "settled status" that EU nationals will have to apply (and be evaluated) for if they want to stay after Brexit. AND you have to do that even if you have already obtained permanent residency otherwise.

So in a way, due to the de facto cancellation of even existing permanent residency for EU nationals, they become a third tier right below non-British non-EU residents of this country.

We will even have our neat little own identity cards with metric data provided for the Home Office!

And snazzy EU flag badges you'll have to wear everywhere you go.

Actually, you are basically just joining the same tier as other immigrants. While that sucks that you thought you'd done what you needed to do to get out of it, not sure it is that big of a hurdle?

Every country Tamas lives in eventually becomes an Orwellian hellhole.

Don't see how this is evidence of that.

So good for Austria he chose not to go there?
Or is that just another excuse for his lack of German learning skills?  :P

Actually no. All EU citizens who presently have permanent resident status will have to re-apply for settled status. In other words, those EU citizens who have the same paperwork as non-EU migrants will have to toss that out and re-apply for the EU-specific one, to receive their ID card and submit their biometrics.

That'll make EU migrants the only people in the UK with a mandatory ID card, although I don't expect it will be mandatory to have it on you all time.

And possibly we won't even be able to vote on local election with that.

Granted, we will still be able to apply for citizenship after getting this status and having spent 6 year here, so 3rd class citizen status is only temporary, but still rather distasteful.

All that shows is that you don't know how non EU immigration works. If I were on a visa that could be renewed or if I lost my current passport, I'd have to get a biometric residence card. Only reason I don't have one is that as when you get visa as non resident it is put in your passport.

Not really sure why the UK shouldn't decide whether or not EU citizens should actually be voting on anything post Brexit. Clearly different concerns. Oh and remember no voting for non EU migrants until settled.

Also settled status in its various variations is something that non EU migrants only get after having been here a while and is an application process. We've no permanent residence outside of that.

As I said, less rights than non-EU holders of permanent residency.

Actually looking that's not even true. Even if I had I definitely leave to remain, I would not be able to vote. Nothing till citizenship.

So again sounds like EU citizens ultimately still end with better deal than non EU migrants not the other way around as you've noted.

In that case need to make him convert to Islam so we can ban him from travelling to the US.
