Seem a shame for Brits to leave monarchy now.  They are one of the very few countries that managed to get monarchy right.

In what way? The monarch doesn't do anything. She serves less purpose in maintaining the reigning political order than figurehead presidents in other European countries.

Exactly.  The monarch doesn't do anything.  They had to kill and exile some monarchs to get to this point.

She exists only to personify the Union.

Though keep in mind this is only Elizabeth's own personal interpretation of how she should act, the rules are...fluid. God knows what her successors will do. Maybe one will be stupid enough to do something?

After three months as Prime Minister, Johnson's won his first Commons vote!

They approved a regulation relating to air quality.

Which other countries managed this?

Luxembourg and Liechtenstein have done well for themselves.
The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

Liechtenstein is an actual monarchy though right? The Prince actually runs things there. Hardly comparable.

I mean most European constitutional monarchies got there without a civil war

A few inconsequential backwaters.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Franco implemented the curious idea of having a monarchy without a king, but I'd hardly recommend that particular political arrangement.

Hey Hungary had a similarly brilliant idea for awhile.

Except we raised the stakes further: we had a monarchy without a monarch, ruled by an admiral without a sea.

IIRC, Lichtenstein voted on a constitutional amendment which increased the powers of the Prince.  He threatened to just leave the country and stay in Austria if the vote didn't go his way.

So he was basically a Horthy copycat. Damn...

So it appears Johnson has managed to negotiate a very mildly adapted version of May v.1. But (as with the moderates) this will be a confidence matter. If any Tory votes against, they'll be expelled.

Apparently the ERG hardliners are 'exploding'. Love to see what the DUP are thinking. Slightly different this time, lots of Tories are telling journalists the Tories without the hardliners are a "happier, saner and more popular party. Let them not vote for it and see what happens to them scrabbling around random US think tanks making speeches about freedom."

It'd take a heart of stone not to laugh.

Edit: Also I will find it objectively very funny if Johnson and Rees-Mogg and any other ERGers basically end up voting for May's deal after all this nonsense.

Of course, that one was copied from the White Russians in Siberia.
