This is a really interesting photo.  The sign says, men to the right, and women to the left.  The sign for men reads from left to right, while the sign for women reads from right to left.  Traditionally, kanji is read from right to left.  But the trend in recent decades is to follow the western way for the text to go from left to right.

The news people were at an unfair disadvantage--they weren't allowed to bring the people that write the things they say to the competition.
