Apropos of nothing, there's a beaver living in my dad's pond again. My dad feeds the beaver poplar branches, so it will stay & repair the pond's dam. So far, it is working.

The beaver emerged out of the water while I was walking by the pond, saw me, and slapped the water hard with its tail when he submerged again. Startled the hell out of me.

Not in this case - the pond has been there for years, all the trees to be killed are already dead. Without beavers, it would dry up and become a beaver meadow, with new trees growing out of it - in a decade or more. New beavers just keeps the pond as it was.
