I had been driving illegally for the last 6 years.  My driver's renewal came up at the same  time my Dad was dying and I didn't feel like messing with it.  I'm sane now, so I got my driver's license again.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Today I learned that apparently its fairly typical for GP surgeries to have rules against being friends with patients.
Now this just underlines to me so much that is wrong with the country today in a nut shell.
Deliberately enforcing that the doctors can't be friends with those smelly commoners they're meant to care for. Stopping them from being part of the communities they serve.

I'd assume it's a way to lower the chance of narcotics abuse.
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

I can think of loads of ethical reasons you'd not let doctors treat people they have a personal emotional connection with. I'm not sure if there's an outright ban (not my area) but I'd be incredibly cautious about doing legal work for a friend - I just feel like the ethical risks are too high.

A lot of professions have at arms length rules built in, either in the ethics section or actual laws. Be it at a business or personal level.

I don't need my GP to be my friend (I see a different one every time...). I would just like them to actually listen to what I'm saying rather than repeating what other patients ask...

The situation is more you have a friend who happens to be a GP and then they get a job at your doctor's office.

Wouldn't impact me as of yet to get them same GP assigned again.

Yeah - from a personal/lawyer perspective I'd worry about being too emotionally invested and not able to actually give the best/right advice. I wouldn't go to a friend as a lawyer - though I might get their recommendation/reference.

There are ethical rules across the number of professions, including doctors and lawyers which strongly encourages those professionals not to be in situations where their professional judgement might be influenced by personal ties.

I can see why a surgeon would never want to operate on a close friend. Emotional detachment can be important in certain circumstances.

As an anecdote, a close friend is a medical professional who referred me to another doc.  I did not think it was because he did not consider me a friend. I understood it was because he thought we were too close.
