I'm thinking to invest in a router. My default isp one has shit WiFi and I'm tempted by the prospect of running a VPN directly in the modem (should let me use it even on my TV).
Anyone else done this or is it pointless?

Never ran a VPN.

Using your own router is a good idea. You will get a lot more control. Especially in the years to come.

Go and investigate pihole with a vpn. Can be done on any computer, I'm right now setting up a Raspberry pi 4 with ubuntu and plan on running PiHole and vpn in docker, it could as well be set up on a mac or a win machine.
