My wife, when she first came to Canada to study ESL, accepted free English lessons at an evangelical church, not knowing what their angle.

She did have an epiphany from that episode - that there was basically no functional difference between how the evangelical Christians (at least at this church) indoctrinated themselves and their children and how the Chinese Communist Party went about it back in China; they used the same cult like techniques and have the same unquestioning faith I their chosen deities.

I'd have asked for a lesson just to fuck with them.

I love free church dinners. I like biscuits and gravy with a side order of shame.

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

How do people encourage themselves to language study?
I've  long term goals that I want to be able to play Nobunagas Ambition and such like.
But short term goals are harder to enthuse myself with. Reading children's books is rather meh.

They move to another country where everybody they meet speaks that language.  :P

It looks like my next job will be at a German multinational. My goal is to make more money. As motivation goes, it's pretty effective.  :P

Trying to be entertaining to people with whom they don't have a language in common.

Pretty long term though, short term motivation is hard to come by.

Well, one of the projects I might be involved with in a few months would require spending perhaps a year in Mexico, which to be honest is not something I fancy. But there's also a lot of work in Germany, so if I can get some of my lost German knowledge back fast enough I might be able to convince the bosses to send someone else to that shithole instead. :P

I remember they used to teach us that "weird" was weird rather than admit the rule was seriously flawed.

QuoteGerman porn star dropped by Neo-Nazi party for having sex with black male
Ina Groll, 28, who was a spokeswoman for the National Democratic Party of Germany and anti-immigration policies, was dropped by the party following the release of her film 'Kitty Discovers Sperm.' She is now facing a boycott by her country's porn industry for her political views.
The National Democratic Party of Germany had no problem making Ina Groll, 28, the face of its right leaning party, until her latest movie unveiled her in a multi-racial tryst.
