The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

To a new world of gods and monsters!

It is impressive how much movie making developed in just four years; technically this film is far ahead of Frankenstein.  The tracking shots feel more free, the soundtrack works throughout (most notably the kettle drum in the heartbeat scene) and the cinematography is simply gorgeous.  The final 30 minutes of the film in the lab are amazing.  The first forty minutes unfortunately involves suffering through Una O'Conner's shrieking woman routine.  In the 1930s the shrieking woman was a stock comic relief character (audiences thought that shrieking women were simply hysterical...) fortunately that fell out of favor.

Frankenstein's monster says "Smoke up kids."   :)
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

I gave it five stars on Netflix so "A".

I'll leave the letter grades up to Ide, but with the exception of "Hell's Angels" I don't think I've seen a James Whale movie that deserved less than an A.

A wise move.  I realize why movie reviewers hate letter grades or other forms of ranking, they're difficult to apply consistently and people get really, really, really fucking upset about them.

This is of course why our professors must earn six figures.  The difficulty of their jobs.

And if you're getting Cs, you might as well quit, school certainly and maybe life, because you suck and things will not work out for you, ever.

Anyway, I think I've said this before, but I find it very difficult to separate Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, because I first watched them back to back.  Together, they're certainly an A.  As individual hour and a half features, I think they'd have to be at least a little unsatisfying--still fantastic, and Bride more so, but there's something about the way Frankenstein ends. :hmm:

P.S. Lol Una O'Connor.  In small doses she's kinda funny.  Cf. The Invisible Man. :D

Blackbody is also offensive, Scandiweenie, though Always Sunny gets a pass...particularly when they including buttshots for the ladies. :perv:
