Quote from: Razgovory on May 22, 2025, 11:06:08 AMWell, I did sign a lease yesterday.  I will be living in a retirement home.  So I'm kinda retired?  At least I won't be homeless.  I was honestly looking at a place like this in St. Louis.

I hope this will mean you will have access to help with your mom. I think this is good. Despite the obvious lameness of living with the elderly all around you.
Yeah, that's the main thing.  I was seriously considering killing myself in front of city hall.  Print up some fliers and hand them out down town, invite state wide officials and members of legislature (they recently passed a law that prevented cities like Columbia for penalizing renters for refusing section 8) and the local TV stations to watch, get a proper protest permit from the city and and then off myself in front of anyone who showed up.  Let the apartment complex, the management and the company deal with the bad press of tossing out an old women with Dementia and her dimwitted son.  Any time someone would google them, my death is what would come up.  I am, after all, a real asshole.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

How dare you want a place to live!

I qualify for retirement in 5 years.

It's a benefit of 2% of salary per year.  So in 2030 I'd be at 52% of salary (26 years).  Not bad, but 3 kids just hitting post-secondary could make that tough.

That being said I've heard that in order to maximize retirement you should go as soon as you can - that the extra 2% of salary per year doesn't really make up for the fact you earn retirement for one less year (assuming you die the same age no matter what).
Posts here are my own private opinions.  I do not speak for my employer.

What's lame about that?  I'd love to live in a retirement home!  My parents live in one and it's great.  Here are just a few of the reasons why:

a) All the food is soft and I'm lazy and don't like to chew;
b) All kinds of clubs!  Theirs has a computer club, a chess club, and even a Dungeons & Dragons club;
c) You don't have to worry about what you say to anyone, since they'll have forgotten it (and probably your name along with it) the next day;
d) The dining area doubles as a mahjongg gaming area, which is great if you like mahjongg and/or arguing

This is really nice. And you can also tell the same jokes and stories and everybody listens to them as if you have never told them before.

Yeah, my dad has been doing this since the 1970s, but now nobody gets mad at him for it.

That may be true if someone did detailed calculations with mortality tables, but your assumption is materially not true.  If you choose to work one more year, your expected number of years in retirement does go down, but it doesn't go down by one year.  Depending on your age when you're deciding whether to work or not work, it can be 0.8 to 0.6 years.

Maybe he can befriend some crazy rich old pensioner and get a creepy old mansion signed over to him in their will on the condition he spends a whole weekend there.
Then it's a toss up whether we are talking horror or spooky comedy.

This is the part of St. Louis people avoid.

Isn't the part Of St Louis people avoid just St Louis in general?

It is a pretty shitty town, but some parts are shittier than others.

I started watching Superstore, I choose to believe it's an accurate depiction of St. Louis.

It's a workplace comedy. I'd rate first season 7/10? It's on Netflix here.
