Quote from: grumbler on May 19, 2025, 07:36:57 PMThe sorts of drone useful in naval warfare ARE conventional aircraft.  They are just unmanned.  If you have a dozen small drone launcher ships with drones that go 100 miles and I have a carrier with drone that go 300 miles, I will wipe the floor with you.

I don't think any more carriers should be built, but the idea that drones will wipe out Britain's carriers in two weeks is fantasy.

Not trying to second guess you here at all because I don't have much of a grounding in modern naval warfare, but what about the naval drones Ukraine have been fielding - Magura I think they're called? How do they fit into the overall puzzle?

Shadowrun creates native American nations out of nowhere but they remain forgotten.

It actually takes me back to a science magazine in the late 80s/early 90s about global warming that had the town of Itzehoe (which was 20 minutes form me) underwater, with gondolas operated by pilots in protective suits (against the UV radiation - it was during the height of the hole in the ozone layer being at peak public awareness) among the ruins.

Keep in mind, Germany's lowest point in the Wilstermarsch was also in the area (which made it a map in one of those near future RTS games in the late 90s), which was even more surreal when I first saw it than Dithmarschen being playable in EU4 :P https://endwar.fandom.com/wiki/Wilstermarsch

They are effective in what amounts to coastal warfare and any naval strategy that involves invasions or naval logistical support of land forces will have to be prepared to deal with them. Beyond coastal waters, though, they are not very effective because they have a very short detection range, being small and close to the water.  They wouldn't be a major threat to a carrier operating in open waters.

It isnt really. Oshawa puts a really good show on Canada Day weekend.

Anyway, next time you're in my hood, give me a call.

Slightly inspired by the mention of George Wendt's age in the Dead Pool thread - since we're all getting up there in age (or have surpassed it): Patrick Stewart was around 47 when he first appeared on Star Trek TNG (born in 1940, show premiered in 1987).

Definitely, though I'm probably not heading back to the GTA in the foreseeable future.  I'm disappointed as I do like the city; especially starting this time of year.   ;)
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

I'm hoping to be 20 years out too but it's probably more realistically 25 years out.
