Ambitious goal is semi-retirement in 10 years.  Realistic goal is semi-retirement in 15.

Still have 16-18 years left if I work till official retirement age (65 or 67, forget which).
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

I tried to retire in 23, but failed miserably.  But on the bright side, I now mostly do only the things I like doing.

That's where I'm aiming with semi-retirement.  Work independently, and be picky about what I work on because I don't really need to work.

I have a lot of work to do before I die and I get annoyed that my job keeps getting in the way.

I don't see myself retiring unless a kid makes it big.

I'll retire just like the actuaries of old intended, just before I die.
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".

Yes, that's my plan - retire as soon as I have enough to be able to live at a basic level, but do part time work to be able to afford the luxuries.

Why not?

Odds of being dead before then, odds of the world being fucked before then, imminent collapse of the pension system, so on.

Well, I did sign a lease yesterday.  I will be living in a retirement home.  So I'm kinda retired?  At least I won't be homeless.  I was honestly looking at a place like this in St. Louis.

This is the part of St. Louis people avoid.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

So not East Saint-Louis where John Carpenter shot Escape from New York.
Cinephiles will be somewhat disappointed.

I hope this will mean you will have access to help with your mom. I think this is good. Despite the obvious lameness of living with the elderly all around you.

Last time I was in East Saint Louis, the traffic lights didn't work.  The city had gone bankrupt and basically lacked a municipality.  No street lights, no police, no street maintenance, no fire department.  I think the state of Illinois moved in and provided funds.
