Gosh, she must be proud and Albertans must be grateful to her for her hard work.

Has she said anything about how she secured this gracious mercy from Trump? Did she offer anything in return or did she simply persuade him with facts and reason?

Yes, she has.

She met with Trump and explained the impact a 25% Tariff would have on Alberta oil will have on US gasoline prices.

She also pointed out that the only practical way to replace that input into the US refineries is to import from Venezuela.

Not only Albertans are happy she did that. You should be too, since a fairly large chunk of the BC budget is based on oil and gas revenues.

I would piss the US government greatly to open Canadian market to China. I am in favor of decreasing the tariffs on China's EV.

I would rather spend more effort trading with countries that make more reliable products.

As for the discussion others had about Chinese EVs, there are already Canadian manufactured EVs to choose from, and if you don't like those, the Koreans, Japanese and Germans have excellent offerings.

That would also fuck us.  That is where most of our production goes, and there is no other real options available since the Pipeline East project was cancelled.  It would take years to build the distribution system to go in a direction different from North South.

With all the big talk of team Canada, we have a completely ineffectual federal government that was flailing around doing nothing. The only semblance of a team Canada approach came from the Ontario Premier and he quickly sold Mexico down the river suggesting that the US should enter into a free trade agreement without any Canada. That was also never going to work.

From what I've seen drift across my screen the messaging seems to be a gesture in the direction of "it's Trudeau's fault for sucking so much", with hints of "with a Conservative government we'd probably maybe have less conflict with Trump."

Is that accurate? Or is the messaging different and I've just missed it?

Personally, I think that Poilievre might never be PM now.  With an election not happening until the fall and his adoption in the past of some Trumnpish rhetorical tricks (stupid nicknames, anyone?), the Liberals are going to have a field day running against Trump.

Yes, in the long term. But the US can't switch to Venezuela overnight. Bleed them dry for as long as possible and use the funds to pay for the logistics of exporting elsewhere.

Canada needs to understand that either it becomes the lapdog of the yanks or they can try and pivot to the EU. It's gonna cost whatever way it chooses.

Interesting that facts and reason were persuasive when it came to gas and oil prices, but not any of the other price consequences. But we should be grateful for small mercies, I suppose.

I wonder how much that is a negative for Trump. He just sent a special envory to Venezuela, and got some American prisoners released, and an agreement on returning Venezuelan migrants. I wonder if they can reach an agreement on oil.
