Quote from: Threviel on Today at 09:08:52 AMCanada should introduce export duties on oil to the US. Fuck the yanks where it obviously hurts and make them pay for it or go crying to the Venezuelans.

Except it would hurt parts of Canada too. Trudeau said yesterday he doesn't want one sector to pay the brunt more than any other.

That means no response will be effective enough.

We have to decide if we think the US will be friendly again or is this it.

If we think this is it. We need to start building pipelines for Oil and Gas, ports for LNG and new train tracks starting yesterday.

Sadly, one of the 2 parties vying for power has a base that wants to be America lite. Are they going to want to be real America?

I think you need to operate under the assumption the US is going to be hostile to Canada for the foreseeable future. If it all works out, it all works out but I certainly cannot guarantee anything. Even if we manage to remove these nuts from power, who knows what the US looks like on the other side?

Zmiinyi defenders: "Russian warship, go fuck yourself."

Yep. I think it's wise to plan for the current Republican administration to undermine the possibilities of the Democrats ever seizing meaningful power for the foreseeable future.

Yeah my expectation is that they're pushing for Putinism with American characteristics. Superficially it seems the American siloviki tend to be more aligned with Trumpism - and one expects the federal and red state ones will be groomed to be more amenable to anti-Democratic (as in, the system of governance not the party) measures. But they've never been fully put to the test, so we'll see.

I'm not giving up hope - for Canada, for Denmark, for the EU, or for the US - but it's going to be a challenging and probably harrowing period in the next several years.

Oexmelin

One thing is for sure: we must use the US as the cautionary tale it is. For our politics, our activism, and the way we envision the possibilities of state power.

Then, let's open the door to China.
