As I've said before I'm very strongly in favour of the BBC but that is kind of based on it doing things that commercial TV channels wouldn't. Which feels like exactly the stuff the BBC has no interest in doing

So I've long left that the mere fact some rando on Twitter says something incredibly stupid shouldn't be a news story, or cause for cancellation, or anything else.  It's just some rando being stupid on Twitter.

This story is A: about Elon Musk, perhaps the world's richest man and highly influential (at leaat for right now) with the incoming administration and B: doing something so incredibly trollish and immature, that I think it's newsworthy.

To a point - but if your news story basically has this package, it's probably worth asking if it's worth reporting:

"Kekius" appears to be a Latinisation of "kek", a word roughly equivalent to "laugh out loud" popularised by gamers but now often associated with the alt right.

"Kek" is also the name of the ancient Egyptian god of darkness, who is sometimes depicted with the head of a frog.

Many people would link "Maximus" to the name of Russell Crowe's heroic character in the film Gladiator, Maximus Decimus Meridius.

Mr Musk's new profile image depicts Pepe in Roman military dress holding what appears to be a game console.

I think it presupposes meaning because of what you say about Musk. There may not be anywhere near as much meaning in what Musk did as that journalist has tried to uncover.

Edit: Basically if a journalist is writing a piece where they're not imparting any information beyond, "Musk has changed his Twitter handle, we don't know what it means and we don't know why", then it's probably worth writing if that piece needs to be written. If it could, in itself, be a Tweet maybe that's the level it should stay.
