Which Musk did and extolled that only AfD can save Germany. (He also said it's ok for him to weigh in on German elections because of his investments in the country.)

He's been playing Victoria 3 I see.

 :D

That's nearly as scary as finding out Timmay hold a senior post in foreign policy somewhere.

The Minsky Moment

Quote from: Sheilbh on December 29, 2024, 04:45:09 AMMusk spent billions of someone else's money for the privilege of being the main character on Twitter every day.

Ever see critical coverage of Saudi policy on X?
King Salman got his 25 million barrels of oil worth.
The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.

Oh yeah - no doubt the someone else got their money's worth.

Although I do see criticism of Saudi but that's just who I follow such as lots of football journalists and got on Twitter because of the Arab Spring and still follow lots of people from then.

Our times really are terrible. Near the top of bbc news is Musk changing his twitter handle

A sign of the flimsy mask we all know is there finally being taken off? But still bloody stupid.  Why is it news.

It's news because this is the richest man in the world with who knows what level of access to US government/lawmaking/military.

Consider how many "news" articles are "someone on Twitter/X/Reddit said...", I'd say most mass journalism is already a zombified walking corpse.

Much easier than actually going out and getting stories. Just sit online and report what happens on Social Media.

Yes - many such cases on the BBC News site.

As I've said before I'm very strongly in favour of the BBC but that is kind of based on it doing things that commercial TV channels wouldn't. Which feels like exactly the stuff the BBC has no interest in doing  :(

So I've long left that the mere fact some rando on Twitter says something incredibly stupid shouldn't be a news story, or cause for cancellation, or anything else.  It's just some rando being stupid on Twitter.

This story is A: about Elon Musk, perhaps the world's richest man and highly influential (at leaat for right now) with the incoming administration and B: doing something so incredibly trollish and immature, that I think it's newsworthy.
Posts here are my own private opinions.  I do not speak for my employer.

We already know he is a troll. What's newsworthy about that?

To a point - but if your news story basically has this package, it's probably worth asking if it's worth reporting:
Quote"Kekius" appears to be a Latinisation of "kek", a word roughly equivalent to "laugh out loud" popularised by gamers but now often associated with the alt right.

"Kek" is also the name of the ancient Egyptian god of darkness, who is sometimes depicted with the head of a frog.

Many people would link "Maximus" to the name of Russell Crowe's heroic character in the film Gladiator, Maximus Decimus Meridius.

Mr Musk's new profile image depicts Pepe in Roman military dress holding what appears to be a game console.

I think it presupposes meaning because of what you say about Musk. There may not be anywhere near as much meaning in what Musk did as that journalist has tried to uncover.

Edit: Basically if a journalist is writing a piece where they're not imparting any information beyond, "Musk has changed his Twitter handle, we don't know what it means and we don't know why", then it's probably worth writing if that piece needs to be written. If it could, in itself, be a Tweet maybe that's the level it should stay.
