Quote from: Sheilbh on November 02, 2023, 04:16:07 PMYeah to be honest I wasn't thinking of the Dark Tower stuff but - and I could be totally wrong - I thought a lot of his novels and stories are all in a shared fictional corner of Maine with overlapping characters?

They did a TV show with that premise - Castle Rock. I never watched it but it got decent reviews, although it got cancelled after a couple seasons.

Josephus

He doesn't have that many overlapping characters really. Only in the "Bill Hodges trilogy" (Mr. Mercedes), and that has been made into a TV mini series. I can't think of any other book (other than the aforementioned Dark Tower) that has recurring characters. Maybe some side characters here and there.

Flagg shows up in a few things, and stars in Kings (actually good) children's book. But can't really build a show around him. His stuff is more a shared universe more so than shared characters.
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

That's a good summary imo.

Best character is Allan.

Quote from: Sheilbh on November 02, 2023, 03:24:12 PMOn franchises - absolutely not the first but I'm slightly surprised no-one's done or trying to do connected Stephen King franchise. From my understanding there's lots of connected characters and a shared universe etc so it feels like it would be perfect for it.

I imagine his rights are an absolute mess though and distributed all over so that maybe why it's never happened.
True. Especially with the dark tower film that would have been the perfect setup

I remember going to that one in the theatres - Mrs B wanted to see it.  I didn't care for it, and seem to recall it was a pretty big flop.

Yes. It was not a good film.
Really rubbish as an adaptation and a stand alone film.

Yes. Eyes of the Dragon, I think it was called. It was a good book.

Past Lives. A Korean immigrant in North America reconnects with her childhood sweetheart once social media become a thing.

This is one of the Oscar favorites. It's a very well done love story, very tasteful and minimalist. The kind of story that with less talented people in front and behind the camera would be pretty forgettable but fortunately they are pretty talented. It's one of those rare films that manages to convey emotion with very little. I admit that I tend to like my movie romances a bit more larger-than-life, but I liked this one a lot.

The story (the non-melodrama part at least) is based on the life of the writer-director, whose parents emigrated to Canada and then she moved to NYC to pursue a career as a playwright. I instantly recognized the same faculty I went to, and given all the references to social media being new and such... yep, it's roughly the same years I was also studying there. I checked and she graduated a bit later than me, but it looks like we at least shared one year (same building, different program).

I watched Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Had no idea what this film would be about but absolutely did not expect this David Croenenberg horror piece.
Family friendly this is not.
It's... Meh.
I like the low stakes but... They're not really are they. Seems caught between episodic content and being something big.
Is there a commentary on how awful mid 20th century urban design is or am I misreading it?

The one thing that surprised me about GOTG3 were the the animal torture bits - pretty intense stuff for this kind of movie.

Pity that Gunn is now wasting his time trying to salvage DC movies at Warner. Even the season 2 of Peacemaker seems on hold  :(

My mother was an artist and she made this felt dragon based on the cover of that book.  Had hundreds of cut out scales, etc.  I had it for a long time, but it eventually kind of got frayed after a few moves.
PDH!

The Brain

All the Light We Cannot See, S1. In occupied WW2 France there is both light and dark. I liked it, a bit different approach to WW2, and it has Hugh Laurie.
Women want me. Men want to be with me.

Yeah the Hugh Laurie part definitely appeals. But I read the book, so I probably shouldn't.

Watched it too a few days ago.
Found it to be a decent enough time-waster. Nothing special, even in the genre. Nice send-off for the crew.
But nothing more than that.

Binging Peaky Blinders and I am now on season 4.  Everyone else in the CC household watched it on release of each season.  They all recommended it, and now I am enjoying it.

It gets dark, but that is part of the attraction.  There are very few redeemable characters, but unlike succession, there are a few.

I am enjoying it thoroughly.

My gf recently watched that the whole way through. I've tried. I've watched the first ep or two numerous times over the years. But it just won't click.
