Yeah, and DC did it with Superman. Batman could be arguably done that way. But Superman? The most powerful hero, who always embodied hope sitting around bars morosely caught up in existential angst?

DC's animated stuff, especially their movies, have been great.  Their live action TV shows may start out good but get CWized (which is Flandersizationx10) quickly.

Marvel and Star Wars are being handled the same way. Everything is interconnected, and everything is being vomited out as quickly as possible.  I liked Ms Marvels, but feel no desire to see The Marvels.

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

Quote from: Darth Wagtaros on November 06, 2023, 05:06:10 PMThat is something that is often missed, especially in the comic book focused commentators. Comic books as an industry and a media form have been circling the drain for a long time. Were it not for the renaissance from the MCU they'd be even more on life support than the already are.  The labels NEED to appeal to new audiences.  Especially as the cost per issue goes up and up.

I'm pretty sure that comic books themselves are entirely incidental to them as a giant IP source for movies and television.
Yes, like I said, comic books as a media form are on their last legs and unlikely to make a recovery. But I still think they are trying to get new audiences for them.
PDH!

Superman III was garbage. That cyborg scene gave me nightmares for weeks. Otherwise it was trash.

Define comic books.

The old school cheap and cheerful weekly magazines are just as fucked as the magazine market in general.

But honestly graphic novels seem a much bigger thing these days in the UK at least than they ever used to be.

What about Nuclear Man in Superman IV?  :P

Yeah, the "graphic novel" format seems to be thriving - at least creatively. I can't speak to whether they're a massive commercial success, but there are a large variety of graphic novel type releases on the market. Old classics are getting rereleased as well and are much more available (in English) than they were in previous decades. I'm seeing older Euro comics available in stores that previously weren't, as well.

Comics are far from dead, even if American weekly four colour comics may be a dying format.

Superman IV was worse.

Total aside but on old school American comics - if you haven't read it, I'd recommend The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon to everyone. Fantastic book on the comics of the 30s and 40s and I think one that would make an incredible film or TV adaptation (I'd lean TV because it's quite big).

SAG has finally reached a tentative agreement with the studios, details will be published tomorrow once their board approves the deal. This puts an end to the Hollywood strikes that started back in May - it's been quite the year for labor strife in the US.

I hope they managed to get most of their demands - particularly in the AI field. That seems an existential threat for the "regular joe" actor.

Its been a curious time. Occasionally turn on a chat show to find them saying "Oh you were great in that show we can't talk about. So moving on. You're in a play".
Like we've all gone super high brow.

In The Runningman, they generate fake images of their prisoner after he escapes the circuit.
We might not be too far off from that.

On Marvel, first review I've seen for The Marvels is one star:
QuoteTo say The Marvels is hard to watch would be to risk understatement. It's not just that it's not very good. It is hard to watch in the sense that a tree is hard to defibrillate.

I've seen reviews all over the place.
"I've never been quite sure what the point of a eunuch is, if truth be told. It seems to me they're only men with the useful bits cut off."

It's running at 62% fresh on Rottentomatoes.  Some reviewers seem to like it.

Problem with reviews for this movie is going to be a loud dedicated minority who will hate it no matter what for being too "woke" because it has female leads in a superhero movie.
