I've been off of FB for a few years now... but got pulled back in. My boy's at an age where an instant messenger for reaching family and a few friends is a good idea, and it turned out that the FB Kids Messenger (or whatever it's called) was the lowest friction one to install.

Feels kind of yucky to be pulled in, but I don't know if I have the time and inclination to research, install, and socialize alternatives 

Unfortunately you are going to have to get used to it, or at least your kids are.  From here on in most if not all of their school/university class groups, clubs, teams, etc. will be organized through that platform.  I don't see anything on the horizon that is going to replace it for that sort of organizing function.

I removed FB from my phone donkies ago. Its too addictive for shouting at random idiots.
I haven't even logged in on my computer for a while. I've read worrying stuff about their tracking- its more than cookies, they fingerprint your system fundamentally so if you've ever logged into fb with a computer they can see it wherever on the web you find a fb plugin.

I unfollowed everyone on FB, it works great. There's basically nothing of interest in my timeline, so I never feel the urge to check. If I want to know how someone is doing I have to look them up. It doesn't happen a lot.

I use facebook daily, altho it's mostly mindless reel scrolling. I haven't updated anything in years.

The rest of my time is managing my children's Messenger Kids accounts. Facebook really created something good with that app.

As the joke goes - I'm in my thirties so I consume TikTok when they're curated and make it on Instagram, like a functioning adult should.

Fun story that has come out in a book by a Spanish diplomat. After an incident involving Russian colonists in then-Spanish California, Russia declared war against Spain in the late XVIIIth century. There was never any hostilities, and everybody just kinda forgot about it. After the fall of the USSR, a Russian clerk found the document and the Russians reached out to Spain to quickly sign a white peace.

I think we should have ceded California to them in that treaty though. It could have been fun

I'd say I'm too old for instagram even.
When it started taking off, around the fb takeover time, I already failed to see the point. The prime instagram age seems to be more mid 20s through to the earliest of 30s.

With friends it's almost more like hobby stuff - so someone I know is really into pottery and posts his new posts or photos from a big walk.
