QuoteRush Limbaugh: John Elway to hurt Romney in Ohio?
Rush Limbaugh called John Elway "gutsy" on Tuesday for supporting Mitt Romney, and wondered whether the NFL Hall of Fame quarterback's endorsement might hurt the GOP presidential nominee in Ohio.
"Elway's a gutsy guy anyway. He's showing up at a Romney rally. Now, owners, that's a different thing, like [Pittsburgh Steelers' owner] Dan Rooney is in the Obama tank in Pittsburgh," the conservative radio host said Tuesday on his program, according to a show transcript.
He added: "He can affect fans' attitude towards the team with his political views. He's loved and adored in Denver."
Elway, currently the Denver Broncos' executive vice president of football operations, endorsed Romney at a rally Monday.
Limbaugh said that the media might say the endorsement could hurt Romney in battleground Ohio, where Cleveland Browns fans might still "hate" Elway for "The Drive," the nickname for the game-tying, 98-yard drive he led against the home-team Browns in the 1987 AFC Championship. (The Broncos went on to win in overtime.)
"Hey, here's a question for you. Elway endorses Romney. Elway is hated in Ohio. Elway was the author of 'The Drive' against the Cleveland Browns, one of the most famous games in NFL history. So is Elway's endorsement of Romney gonna hurt Romney with Browns fans because the Browns are all important in Ohio, and they hate Elway? Well, I'm just throwing it out there. I mean it's the way the media might analyze this. I'm just trying to prepare you for what might come of this. It's the way they connect the dots," he said, laughing, according to the transcript. "I know it sounds ridiculous."
It was actually the 1986 season AFC Championship. The 1987 season AFC Championship was The Fumble. Playoff games are referred to by the seasons they are associated with, not the calendar date. You Oxycotin fucker.
No mention of Elway affecting the evangelical vote in Colorado by getting rid of Tebow, though. One would think that point would be more timely.
I get a kick out of the Republicans always acting like they are some sort of persecuted minority and it is a brave and courageous thing to come out as a Republican. OMG he supported one of the major two party candidates? How...um...normal and uninteresting.

Pretty sweet first drive by the Rams. Maybe Fisher might be able to get to put some heart into these guys after all.

QuoteFootball and politics meet again: Former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue and his wife have said they will give $100,000 to Maryland's same-sex marriage campaign.
The donation, reported first by the Washington Blade, is the latest in what is becoming quite the trend of the NFL involving itself in Maryland state politics.
According to the Blade, Tagliabue announced the the donation at a fundraiser earlier this week in Washington, D.C. "We had the privilege of raising our family in Maryland. We have the privilege of now living in the District of Columbia. We've lived in New York where they passed marriage equality. We spend time in the summer in Maine, where they are fighting it again. I think this is the time to view this not as an expense, but as a capital investment in our nation's infrastructure," he said.
The NFL and Maryland politics pattern started with Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo supporting same-sex marriage here. Then Vikings punter Chris Kluwe weighed-in to support Ayanbadejo when the Ravens player came under attack from a Maryland Democratic lawmaker.
Next Ravens center Matt Birk got in on the action. He's expected to release a video opposing same-sex marriage later today.
The major league support is bleeding over to other issues. The Redskins this week said they will support expanding gambling.

QuoteChiefs offensive tackle Eric Winston chose his words carefully in ripping the fans who cheered when quarterback Matt Cassel suffered a head injury in the fourth quarter and was removed from Sunday's 9-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
"We are athletes. We are not gladiators," Winston said. "This isn't the Roman Coliseum. People pay their hard earned money to come in here. I believe they can boo, they can cheer, they can do whatever they want ... we're lucky to play this game. It's hard economic times, and they still pay the money to do this.
"But when somebody gets hurt ... there are long-lasting ramifications to the game we play ... I've already come to the understanding I won't live as long because I play this game. And that's okay. That's the choice I've made. That's the choice all of us made.
"But when you cheer somebody getting knocked out, I don't care who it is, and just so happened to be Matt Cassel, it's 100 percent sickening. I've been in some rough times on some rough teams, I've never been so embarrassed in my life to play football, than at that moment right there."
Cassel was injured after he was sandwiched between Baltimore pass rushers Paul Kruger and Haloti Nagata after he completed a 16-yard pass to Jamaal Charles with 9 minutes, 37 seconds left in the game. Cassel has been under fire this season, especially after throwing three interceptions in last week's loss to San Diego.
"I get emotional about it because these guys work their butts off," Winston said. "Matt Cassel hasn't done anything to you people ... hasn't done anything to the media writers who kill him, hasn't done anything wrong to the people who come out here and cheer him. If he's not the best quarterback, he's not the best quarterback, and that's okay.
"But he's a person. And he got knocked out in a game, and we got 70,000 people cheering. Boo him all you want. Boo me all you want. Throw me under the bus. Tell me I'm doing a bad job, say I've got to protect him more ... but if you're one of those people who were out there cheering, or even smiled, when he got knocked out, I just want everyone to know it's sickening and disgusting.
"Don't blame a guy and don't cheer for a guy (when injured) who has done everything in his power to play as good as he can for the fans. It's sickening. I want every fan to know it. We have a lot of problems as a society if people think that's okay."
Cassel had a hand in all four of the Chiefs' turnovers, and three led to all 9 points Baltimore scored.
Cassel was charged with a fumble on a pitch that went off the hands of rookie Cyrus Gray; he fumbled a snap at the Baltimore 1; though Lilja was given the fumble on that play; and threw two interceptions, though one went off the hands of wide receiver Dwayne Bowe.
Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said it appeared Gray took his eye off the ball that Cassel pitched. And Lilja, a guard making his second start at center in place of Rodney Hudson, took the blame for the fumble at the 1.
"That's my fault," Lilja said of the botched snap at the goal line on the first drive of the third quarter when the Chiefs trailed 6-3. "I did not get it back there. I apologize to our fans, and I apologize to our guys., You can't do that down (at the goal line). I left it short, and it cost our team."
After Cassel was injured, backup Brady Quinn finished the drive that ended with a 31-yard field goal by Ryan Succop, cutting Baltimore's lead to 9-6 with 4:31 to play, but the Chiefs never got the ball back.
Winston said in the seven years he's played in the NFL, it's the first time he's seen a quarterback cheered when injured at home.
"And I've been on some bad teams and in some tough situations," he said. "I know the fans are frustrated. We're frustrated. And I understand the backup quarterback is sometimes the most popular guy on the team. I get it. But it's not okay"
Winston said he spoke with Cassel after the game but did not want to comment on Cassel's condition.
"We had a private conversation ... " Winston said. " I asked, 'How are you feeling?', I said some words to him, and that was it."
I read the bolded bits before I saw who was speaking, and I thought to myself: wow, that's a surprisingly coherent/thoughtful thing for a football player to say - must be an offensive lineman talking.
You could expect that from a guard or center but pretty surprising from a tackle.

Even if the record falls, you can't take away the fact that Unitas' achievement is more impressive. Yeah there is no way Brees' record compares to Johnny U's. It is like Don Hutson's 99 Touchdown receptions. Sure it has been broken since but it will live forever as a truly mindblowing achievement.
Question for the old timers: How long do you think it takes to cultivate a loyal, intelligent (or at least "football-smart") home field crowd? Reason I ask is that there were a couple things I noticed yesterday at the Bengals game that stuck in my head and bother me quite a bit. It's hardly the first time for either thing, but both were still disappointing given that it was a sellout crowd that came to see their 3-1 team.
First was when the Bengals were down 17-13 in the 4th quarter with about 10:00 to go in the game. They had an offensive drive stall about mid-field so they had to punt. Huber (who has been excellent with inside-10 punts this year) pinned the Dolphins back on to their 4 yard line. So the crowd dutifully made a lot of noise on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down but then the Dolphins converted and moved the ball to their 20. Crowd went dead silent from that point and barely made any noise for the rest of the game, despite their team being down less than a TD. That would not have happened in other places I've been, such as Baltimore, Philly, New York, Pittsburgh or 1980s Cincinnati for that matter.
As a side note to above, Bengals fans still don't have it figured out that you shut the hell up when your offense is lined up, even if (especially if) they just made a big play to get in the red zone. As much as I hate to imitate the Steelers, PBS needs to do what they do at Heinz Field and put a reminder up on the score board to be quiet while the Steelers offense is lined up.
Anyway, the second thing that bugged me: Bengals are able to make a midfield defensive stop with 1:53 to go in the game. Punt results in a touchback, and then there's a TV timeout. I stand up to stretch my legs and notice than a few upper deck fans leaving. Bengals trailed by 4 points and still have a shot to win the game with one of the best 4th quarter QBs in the NFL. But apparently large parts of the crowd are more concerned with beating traffic than seeing what happens. Fans here have no heart.
I know a lot of it is due to scars from the dark era of the 90s and early 00s, and then inconsistent yearly performance after that point. I'd like to think that if the Bengals were to put together a consistently decent team over the years (as much as can be allowed by the current parity in the league) the fans would gain some intelligence and loyalty. I just wonder how long that would take.
Dude, it's the bungles. Why bother building up any sort of loyalty to a Mike Brown owned team?

If you hate Mike Brown, just don't go to the game. I don't get the mentality of spending $70 on a ticket plus whatever they charge for beer/food now and not trying to make the most out of it.
I swear to god the Texans message board I go to is just awful but I can't stop checking it out ~once a week. Every single thread has something that just bothers me though.
For example, separated by a few posts in the same thread, different posters:
"OD, Casey, Graham & Kevin could play huge rolls."
"Right now it's working but in the long hall?"
What the fuck? The long hall? Huge rolls? Really? I get that stupid typos/brain farts happen, and to be fair not everyone there is doing that, but I can't remember the last time I saw a thread where someone wasn't fucking something like that up at least once. :hmm: There, they're, their is also a constantly messed up thing over there too. Things like that.

Bengals message board is worse. I usually have to re-read something in order to see past the typos. Hardcore NFL fans definitely aren't English majors.
I should also mention "should of." That one is one there a lot, and I feel like my face is melting off every time I see it.

E: Goddammit, I just lost a whole post because my nook freaked the fuck out and registered like 25 "keystrokes" all at once, including one that happened to be the "back" arrow (it was the keyboard down icon when I pushed it). Anyway, that thread was about Cromartie saying he's going to have no trouble covering A. Johnson, etc. Apparently the Jets big plan is to load the box, put the DBs one on one with the WRs and give them a single safety for help. I guess it could work, but god help them if a WR gets by a DB (happens all the time) and that one safety is a step slow or something (also happens all the time).

I think it can be summed up pretty easily:
Cincinnati Bengals: est. 1968.
Cincinnati Reds: est. 1881.
I just happen to think that there are baseball towns, and football towns.
The Bengals are still too "new"; granted, they've been to the Super Bowl a couple times and have had very competitive seasons from time to time, but they are barely older than you and I, with absolutely no heritage for winning compared to other, much older franchises, and especially compared to the baseball team they share with the city. Cincinnati simply strikes me as a "baseball first" town, and the fan base for the Bengals reflect that. Don't pay too much attention to them, don't really know to keep quiet when they have the ball, and don't really care. It's not a franchise that's worshiped like the Reds.
Same goes for St. Louis: the old football Cardinals had some competitive teams, but they couldn't hold a candle to popularity the baseball Cardinals. Even with the talent surrounding Don Coryell's teams, or the premature ending of Neil Lomax's career, or the double HOF side of the line in Dierdorf and Dobler, they can't touch the craziness that the baseball Cards can whip up, even at their worst. And today's Rams, even with the Super Bowl runs, are just something to watch between baseball seasons. Hell, the Blues have a more loyal following than the Rams.
Baltimore is the other way around: even with the rich history of the Orioles, regardless of how well they do, they will always be overshadowed by those horseshoes. Palmer, the Robinsons, and Ripken will always take a back seat to Unitas, Berry and Moore. That's just the way it is here, and the Ravens reflect that, too. I was listening to sports talk radio on Opening Day--new team, new manager, new GM--and the first half-dozen callers in the morning all wanted to talk about the Ravens and the draft. Even without the Colts and well before the Ravens, there was an emotional detachment with the O's for many years, mainly from the legacy of Edward Bennett Williams, who insisted on sharing the team with Washington, DC and his fellow Washington lawyer buddies. This town never forgave him for taking "Baltimore" off the away jerseys, scaring people into thinking he'd move them to Washington, and it carried in Peter Asbestos' ownership reign of meddling, bad spending and letting his sons make roster decisions like it was their own personal rotisserie team. Baltimore has been, is, and always will be a football first town; from the Colts, to their theft, to this city's complete and total borderline-irrational defensiveness over the Ravens, the team the league never, ever wanted us to have. ROOT FOR THE EAGLES OR REDSKINS AND BUILD A MUSEUM INSTEAD, he said. Fucker.
I just think some towns' fans just don't have enough passion for two franchises at once, particularly a town with two lopsided franchises like Cincy, where one has been a bedrock of a sport for well over a century, and the other is an expansion team younger than color television.
Anyway, that's my theory about Cincy fans.

Wouldn't be surprised if someone actually tried to correct you on the Bengals forum for saying "should have" or "should've" :D

You are correct. Throw in college basketball right behind the Reds, and football is #3 in this town. Still-- I don't remember Bengals fans being this way during the 80s. And I think a little fan education thrown into the stadium experience (which is pretty miserable compared to most other stadiums I've visited) would go a long way.
You know, I've been wanting to see
Hey TD Texans
Anyway, I've been wanting to see Forsett play more in games this season, but it sucks that Tate has to be out for it to really happen.
Man, the Texans are lucky that the Jets receivers are guys that shouldn't even be playing in the NFL.
E: ^^ Why? There haven't been any blown coverages that I've seen. Closest was Quin, and he got back there enough to get a hand in there. ^^
Yikes that was a bad throw by Schaub. Trying to force it in there.
I know that call was meaningless because he made the catch, but I didn't see interference there.

That Tebow pass really should have been caught.
Man, Sanchez threw two really good passes in a row. Those were not big margins of error.
Pass interference? What happened, I didn't see it. Came back into the room in time to see that nice pass and catch for the Jets TD.

They threw a flag on Johnathan Joseph on a longish catch by that Gates kid. He didn't turn around, but he also didn't do anything to impede the catch other than running right next to him. Contact wasn't early, no holding or anything. I don't get it.

bring back the scab refs!
Yeah, but I just hate see them going against the defence. The offence has all the advantages already, they don't need the benefit of the doubt on PI.

 No way man. They were pretty fond of calling crazy no-touch PI on Houston as well.
E: Well, at least he walked off on his own, so he isn't permanently crippled. Maybe.
Man, that changed the game.
I need Texans to just kick field goals all of 2nd half and I can beat MBM.
Here's to hoping Foster doesn't go crazy in the second half and Timmah drops to 0-5.
Jets making a game of it :o
The Jets are being weird. They get a big return TD, so what do they do? Use a different return guy on the next kickoff. Tebow running the zone read pretty well in the redzone? Put Sanchez in for two straight incomplete passes.
What's the point of alternating QBs? I mean as a casual, at best, NFL viewer I just don't get it.
I'm also getting tired of Trindon Holliday fucking up kickoffs.
Holy shit. That was a pla....did Gruden just say JJ Watt is a hall of fame candidate? I like the guy too, but lets tap the brakes, dude.
lol, J.E.T.S. JETS JETS DOH
Nice time for a pick there.

Yeah, that's what I said too. He's had a great first two years, but let's remember Jared Allen here. If all of the sudden Watt were to slow down, noone would remember his name.

I almost went with the Shawne Merriman example, but then he was clearly enhanced by the roids so not fair to Watt.
And Gruden was just repeating and agreeing with Wade Phillips on the broadcast

No shit. Once that guy had to get tested, his career disappeared faster than Brian Bozworth's shoulder cartilage.
But shit, who knows what will happen over his career. I mean look at RGIII, for all we know this concussion could be start of habitual thing that cuts his career short.

Not even including last week, all his games this season have already demonstrated that he's going to play like Vick, McNabb and McNair, come hell or high water. A career cut short, with the mandatory 3-9 games missed a season because he wants to be Superman, and thinks he's still playing Rice.
And... Goodell has reissued his suspensions to Vilma, Smith, and the rest. Hod do I hate that asshole.

The surprising thing is that some of the other players got their penalties reduced, and that it took so long. Still, I think we can all agree that no tears will be shed if a crazy fan takes matters into his own hands during the week of the Superbowl.
Cushing done for the season with a torn ACL:
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/eye-on-football/20521777/report-texans-fear-brian-cushing-has-acl-tear
Not particularly surprising with how he got hit and all.
Annnnd the Trindon Holliday experiment is over. Released today. The Texans also signed an LB and a G. The LB is obviously to be a backup to Cushing's backup, the G, I don't want to know. Barrett Ruud and Cody White?

Frankly I just admire CdM's loyalty to his hometown team, the Cleveland Browns. It's hard for the old Cleveland Brown diehards, like CdM, to get over the fact that Belichick was the last coach with the real Browns. Even though it's not Belichick's fault that the Cleveland Browns now play in that shithole Baltimore.
