Title: Top PC game of all time?

Xcom.  I wholeheartedly agree.  http://pc.ign.com/articles/101/1011624p1.html (http://pc.ign.com/articles/101/1011624p1.html)

Reeks of nostalgia.

I must have been stoned in 1994, cause I don't even remember that game! The rest of them I remember fondly, except for the Sims stuff that I never played.

I played Diablo probably every day for six months.

I'm surprised that none of the games in the "Age of Empires" made it.

I really loved Jagged Alliance games, and XCOM was billed as a better and more popular game of that genre.  I pirated it to see what all the buzz was about, and was dumbfounded.

I've played nearly every game on there, and I did really like X-COM, but I dunno about "greatest game of all time".

Disagree a lot with the list, but that's me.  I only played probably half of the games listed though.

Haven't played a lot of them, or I've just played them a little bit.
On my personal list, I'd substitute Angband for Diablo (they're basically the same I believe, except Diablo has graphics), the Marathon trilogy for Quake/Doom/etc.

C&C, SimCity, Mechwarrior 2... the list brings back some good memories.

I'll have to actually give X-Com a spin. I have it but haven't tried playing it yet.

PC games were pretty crappy that early on. I hardly think a game like Space Invaders deserves to be on the best games ever list.

This is pretty retarded, especially for a genre developing as fast as computer games.

As a result, instead of "Top game of all time" this becomes "Top game I spent most time playing while I was still young enough to have no critical sense and too much time on my hands, while I am still sad and nerdy enough to bother and vote for at my age."

Sims and WoW are the only two possible contenders (ok, let's throw in the Civilization series too) for the "top PC game of all time", if people who played those actually bothered to vote in a silly contest like that.

Its really hard to measure a game. Really though games can't be compared like this. A best of 80s or 90s list would be more appropriate, I think.

Even the crappiest title today would have probably blown anything out of the water if it had been released during the 80s.

Naw, you can still play (edit: some) oldass games, and the really good ones, like what we're talking about, tend to still be fun.  The graphics will, of course, really suck, but the gameplay is good (which is more than I can say about the gameplay in a lot of the so called "omgkickass!1! 99/100 Gold Stars!!" modern games I own).

Its a mix of nostalgia and the fact many of those old games were doing something new. The gameplay in modern games doesn't really suck as much as its nothing we haven't seen before.

I'm pretty sure kids playing the games of today feel as strongly for them as a lot of us feel about really old 80s/90s games.

I never have finished xcom. I always lose interest as I start attacking alien bases.

The big yeys from me on the list; Deus Ex, Baldurs Gate, Civ.
Half Life is...iffy. Half Life sucks but TFC and DoD are amazing.

They seem a bit mixed up on the point of the list though; sometimes they include games which were amazing for their time (xcom, sim city over a latter version) and others they go for the newest and actually best one (civ 4 over 2)

And no Frontier Elite? WTF. Die heathens.

QuoteHave you ever wondered what it would be like to rule a nation during the cultured Victorian era? I know I have, and now thanks to Paradox entertainment we all have our chance.

Running a nation is no easy business, but with many options available to you, why not give it a go? Ruling from the mid 19th century to early 20th century, it is possible to establish a colonial empire, gain land in the civilized continent of Europe, mayhap to save the decaying Ottoman empire?

This has to be one of the most fun games out there, and I think it will exceed even the acclaimed Europa Universalis series. It is INDEED a good purchase if you are a fan of strategy games or history.

It is also an excellent learning tool as if teaches 19th century history in an amusing game setting.

In sales, no, I doubt it's in the Top 100.  But when it comes to quality, well, I probably wouldn't put it in the Top 10 either, because when it was first released it was so buggy (it didn't really become a great game until the 5th or 6th patch), but it's in the Top 100 easily.

God, though, that's a horrible list.  No Master of Orion, no Colonization, no War in Russia, nothing from The Elder Scrolls series, nor from the Heroes of Might and Magic series, no sports games at all.

X Com is the shiznit, I don't know if it's #1 of all time but it's a friggin' great game. I must have played like half of that list, and I still miss some. I'd add more graphic adventures (Monkey Island 1 and 2, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Sam & Max, Shadow of the Comet), Panzer General, Masters of Orion, Civ II, Colonization and, of course, Championship/Football Manager.

Are we talking solely about sales/popularity? Because I'm pretty sure Citizen Kane isn't the world's biggest blockbuster yet it tops most top films list. EU2 was certainly very good and groundbreaking game (ok, EU1 was but it's practically the same thing) so I don't see why it shouldn't be on the list.

TIE Fighter was awesome.  Although X-Wing Alliance would surpass it in every respect, TIE Fighter was the right game at the right time, back when flight sims ruled the roost.  It learned from Wing Commander and made something that was, for all intents and purposes, perfect.

I wonder why they don't remake the games at all.  Why let a good idea languish just because it was done in 1995?  What's wrong with porting a game that was very popular, but now can't run on most PCs, into a new version?

X-Com, is among one of my favorites, though not sure if I'd make it first on the list.  Civ series another favorite, the first Colonization too though it was a fairly simple game really. Sim City games but not so into them now. Caesar game series. Panzer General, Patrician 2 &3. Also I rate Vicky Revolutions and HOI2 as favorite games, even though I've played them less than some of the others. I often spend a lot of time with easier to play games, depending on my mood, and other times I love the heavier detail of games. And then there's certainly some games I can't think of now to add.

The list is pretty good except the Top 2. That's just retarded.
TIE Fighter was awesome.  Although X-Wing Alliance would surpass it in every respect, TIE Fighter was the right game at the right time, back when flight sims ruled the roost.  It learned from Wing Commander and made something that was, for all intents and purposes, perfect.

Hells yeah!

Masters of Magic and Masters of Orion should have been in the top 10.

I still would have gone with Civ (the original) it was just so mind blowingly unique at the time.

Curiously doesn't cover as many genres that make PC gaming unique in regards to Console games.  Things such as old turn based war games and the like.  Weird that no Ultima games were put on there.  I mean these were highly influential and popular in their day.  I would put games that started genres, reinvented genres, or revived them.  For instance, why put Crysis in there?  It hasn't done anything new or interesting.  It's simply one of a long line of FPS.  Only a fair one as well.

Yeah, what's up with Crysis?  I mean, all of those games were either super-popular or innovative, and usually both.  Crysis just doesn't belong.

I don't think Crysis even sold well.

Wholeheartedly seconded.

Mine would probably have Planescape, Thief, Half-Life 2, Fallout and Homeworld on it.

Would this be a good time to admit that I still play Tie Fighter?  :P

Also, the lack of StarControl 2 or SMAC is a disappointment.
SC2 is a weird one. A very good game but one I'd absolutely never heard let alone played until Ur-Quan masters.

Sims and WoW are the only two possible contenders (ok, let's throw in the Civilization series too) for the "top PC game of all time", if people who played those actually bothered to vote in a silly contest like that.
Why is it that every so often you feel the need to embarrass yourself with nonsense like this?

Well, people doubt that he's really a lawyer, because he posts stupid stuff about the law.  So he figures that if he posts stupid stuff about other topics, then maybe everyone will think that he really is a lawyer, but is just stupid.

Even though I never liked it, I must say that Tetris should be on that list.

I definitely approve of that top two. I still play X-Com from time to time.

Problem with Tetris was that it was originally an arcade game.  Games like that, or Pac-Man, or Space Invaders or een Stree Fighter might belong on a list of greatest videogames, but not greatest PC games.

Thinking about it, this list is missing Oregon Trail.

FWIW

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris

QuoteTetris has been involved in many legal battles. In June 1984, Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris on an Elektronika 60 while working for the Soviet Academy of Sciences at their Computer Center in Moscow with Dmitry Pavlovsky, and Vadim Gerasimov ported it to the IBM PC. Gerasimov reports that Pajitnov chose the name "Tetris" as "a combination of 'tetramino' and 'tennis'." From there, the PC game exploded into popularity, and began spreading all around Moscow. This version is available on Gerasimov's web site.[4]

Perhaps I am wrong.  Or perhaps it's enough to say that multi-platform games do not qualify.

Tetris should be on any list of the top 25 video games of all time.  Whether it qualifies as a "PC game" is a question I'll leave to others.

I didn't know they had a great deal of PCs in Moscow in the mid 1980's.  I remember reading the the country only had around 300,000 computers of any kind by the time Gorby came to power (compared to the 8 million computers in the US).

My dad had a couple of PCs at his work, starting in late 1980ies.  They were kept all locked away in one room, except the one on his desk.  During school vacations I used to come with him to work and spend the entire day in that room.  Whenever I came to see him in his office, he played a card game on his PC.  That's where I learned my work ethic.

As I've said before Civ is a weird one for me.
Civ 2 at the time was indeed absolutely amazing. Above anything else, ate huge chunks of my life, brilliant.
Civ 4 though nowhere near such as good and revolutionary a game for its time on the other hand I think is actually a better game if you try and look at them both from a neutral modern standpoint.
I'd keep it with Civ 4.

What else have they bought though beyond the Sims and endless addon packs?
I seriously struggle to think of anything. My sister bought herself a mac of all things, when I told her macs were crap and nothing would run on them her explanation was thus 'Its pretty and it runs the Sims 3 which is the only game I care about'.
