Shit - I got to get my fantasy team fixed up.

I joined another league with my brother.  Only 6 players total - rosters are almost ridiculous.

Time to Strive for Seven!!!  :yeah:
Title: Re: NFL Week 1 Thread

My picks:

Thursday
Titans @ Steelers - Let the hangover begin.  This game means everything to the Titans, it's all about emotion and momentum for them.  It'll be interesting to see who wins the battle between Tennesee's awesome O-line and the Steelers' formidable front 7, or rather 8, since Polamalu will probably be spending a fair bit of time in the box.  For the Titans to win, they need to win that battle.

Sunday
Dolphins @ Falcons - Pennington will probably be back to his accurate ways, but I think Miami's D is significantly better than last year's version.  The Falcons are good, but I think that Miami's D will be the differencemaker.

Chiefs @ Ravens - The Ravens are good.  The Chiefs will give Detroit and Oakland a run for worst team in the league this year.  Squash match.

Eagles @ Panthers - The Eagles are a solid club, although I don't quite buy them as Super Bowl contenders.  The Panthers are a bit more suspect, and I doubt their D.  Also, is it just me, or has Steve Smith maybe lost a step?

Broncos @ Bengals - Two terrible teams.  Still, the Bengals have had an improving D and they still have Palmer.  The Broncos have Orton, and a defence that makes Detroit look All-Pro.  Yikes.

Vikings @ Browns - If this was Week 12, the Browns would win.  However, Favre will be good for a few weeks, and Brady Quinn will never be good.

Jets @ Texans - I'm taking Houston at home.  Sanchez is not the answer, although it's not impossible that the Jets defence steals this one.

Jaguars @ Colts - Peyton Manning is still pretty good.  Jacksonville desperately needs an O-line, and the pack of rookies they have aren't quite ready for prime time.

Lions @ Saints - Looks like Drew Brees will be able to start down the path towards breaking Marino's record.  Detroit is utterly hopeless.  Line play defines the NFL, and the Lions players would be lucky to get a job in the CFL.

Cowboys @ Buccaneers - Tampa is in total disarray.  The Cowboys are still a decent team, and should handle this one.

49ers @ Cardinals - I like the Niners, but I think the Cardinals have too much firepower for San Fran to win.

Redskins @ Giants - The Redskins are reprehensible, and not really all that good.  I don't think the Haynesworth money is going to be worth it.

Rams @ Seahawks - Hasselbeck is healthier this year, and the Rams don't have a chance unless Bulger gets hurt and Boller plays.

Bears @ Packers - Cutler is a total ass, but he's a better QB than Rodgers.  In fact, Chicago has the edge in most areas over Green Bay.

Monday
Bills @ Patriots - How in the fuck these two games got on Monday Night is a mystery to me.  Even with TO, the Bills are unredeemably bad.  Even if they had the best talent in the world, Dick Jauron could give Wade Phillips a run for his money when it comes to bad, cowardly coaching.  The Cheatriots could win this one playing clean.  They'll cheat anyways, of course.

Chargers @ Raiders - Even if Tom Cable punches out Asshole Rivers, Billy Volek could demolish the Raiders, probably single-handedly.  Jamarcus Russell is bad.  By halftime, the lead will be so great that they'll set Shawne Merriman lose in the stands to beat up random women, because Raider Chicks are tougher than the Raider players.  Asomugha can't do everything.

Seems like everybody I know around here has a friend who is a Broncos fan & wants tickets for Sunday.  Best so far is my buddy's wife, who asked me if I can get her doctor (a "huge Broncos fan") on the field.  Rrrright, I'll get right on that.

My picks:

Rams @ Seahawks - Hasselbeck is healthier this year, and the Rams don't have a chance unless Bulger gets hurt and Boller plays.

Plus, Seattle has Houshmandzadeh and Edgerrin James this year. They might get back on top of the ever so challenging NFC West this season, after the Cardinals one off winning season last year.

Title: Re: NFL Week 1 Thread

My picks:

Thursday
Titans @ Steelers - It's not a Super Bowl, the NFL will let them lose to avoid calls of bias and bullshit reffing.

Sunday
Dolphins @ Falcons - Falcons' O will be too much I think.  Unless Sparano has even more ticks up his sleeve to try this year.

Chiefs @ Ravens - Hahahahaha.  Ow.

Eagles @ Panthers - I think the Panthers will still be in shellshock from the beatdown in the playoffs that mystified everyone.  Give them this game to right the ship.

Broncos @ Bengals - Orton is money.  Granted money with Mugabee's portrait on it, but still money.  Dammit.

Vikings @ Browns - I can dream, can't I?

Jets @ Texans - As we all know, the Texans can't become a decent team till mid-season when they engineer a run at the playoffs and just miss.  Again.  They won't be ready for Sunday.

Jaguars @ Colts - Peyton Manning?  Still good.  Colts?  Still winning.

Lions @ Saints -Hod will smile on me and my LFFL team.  I hope.

Cowboys @ Buccaneers - Tampa burned down their own house after last year's collapse.  They'll need time to rebuild.

49ers @ Cardinals - Hey Katmai, who's starting at QB?  Does it matter?  No.

Redskins @ Giants - The Redskins were an early season team last year, I'm expecting more of the same this year.

Rams @ Seahawks - Hasselback healthy and now TJ Houshmadaddy to pass to?

Bears@ Packers - Packers were legit last year on offense, if they find a way on D they'll be tough to stop.  The Bears D is another year older, and I'm not sold on Cutler.  Plus they traded my boy Orton to the punk bitch Broncos.

Monday
Bills @ Patriots - Seriously Buffalo?  Could you have fucked things up anymore in the last weeks of Pre-Season?  Wow.

Chargers @ Raiders - Opening MNF?  Raiders?  Fuuuuuuuck me.

I hereby declare my intention to follow the Green Bay Packers throughout this season, if no other means available, then by torrenting their televised games off the Internets.
If I like them, they will be my official NFL club. In which case, expect me to refer to them as "we" in 3 or 4 years.

In theory, he could look into buying some shares of the team, thereby legitimately being able to say "we" as he'd be partial owner.

I have a hard time seeing the Broncos beating the Bengals.  The Broncos are like Berlin in 1945:  Broken, confused, leaderless and about to be gangraped by hordes of invaders.

You know, with the NFC North and AFC East this year, I have a feeling that both the Ravens and Steelers will make the playoffs again this year.  And by quirk of fate, the Steelers' first-place schedule is actually easier than the Ravens' second place schedule.

Yes, a not-for-profit professional sports team.

Here are my totally unbiased picks:

Thursday
Titans @ Steelers - Kerry Collins will get injured with the Titans down 35-0 and Vince Young will come off the bench and score six times on 80 yard runs to win the game.

Sunday
Dolphins @ Falcons - Ricky Williams will rush for over 200 yards.

Chiefs @ Ravens - Jamaal Charles will...ok nevermind the Chiefs suck.

Eagles @ Panthers - Brian Westbrook is still healthy

Broncos @ Bengals - The Broncos are in total disarray and their defense was so horrible last year...well it will be a long year.

Vikings @ Browns - Brett Favre has to get the Vikings fans excited so his late season interceptions can rip their hearts out.

Jets @ Texans - The Texans defense should be good...they haven't looked good in the preseason but that is the preseason.

Jaguars @ Colts - They are the Colts.

Lions @ Saints -I will just keep picking against the Lions until...well nevermind the until.

Cowgirls @ Buccaneers - Romo and co will set their fans up again for one of their wonderous December collapses.

49ers @ Cardinals - God's own chosen warrior, Kurt Warner, strikes down gay america's team.

Redskins @ Giants - The Redskins begin their legendary 19-0 season.

Rams @ Seahawks - Easy win for the Seahawks.

Bears @ Packers - The Bears finally have a QB...a douchebaggy QB...but still a QB.

Monday
Bills @ Patriots - The fightin' Timmays

Chargers @ Raiders - *yawn*

No update on the Merriman situation? I am shocked.

I was riding around doing home checks this morning and listening to a local talk show (non-sports). They stated that new information had come out concerning the Merriman/Tequila incident. Apparently, Merriman was having a threesome with two other girls when Tequila walked in on them. He invited her to join them but she got upset. She took her clothes off and left the room threatening to sleep with a member of his posse. Merriman supposedly attempted to stop her when she tried to go outside naked.

I was hoping for more details...

From SI:
QuoteThursday's victory might be costly, however - star safety Troy Polamalu , the best player on the field during the first half, sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee on a blocked field goal. Coach Mike Tomlin said the injury usually sidelines a player 3 to 6 weeks.

Agreed - too much talk about Brady, even though I'm a Pats fan. The Brady and his super model wife gets too much attention, not really due to the two of them seeking it out.

Anyhow, teams will be blitzing, putting pressure on Brady. That was what teams found the best to do in the 2007 season, when Brady and that super receiving group put up huge numbers, culminating with the Giants Super Bowl win. For his part, Brady is hungry, fired up, for the season. I was wondering if he'd lost his desire but apparently he's more competitive than ever after his year off.

I was hoping for more details...

It seems the charges were dropped.

Also, a 6ft4 guy, weighing over 270 lbs, vs. a 4ft11 tiny Asian chick? I think I've seen movies of that.

The tv schedule for the first week on my cable:

5pm     Live Sunday NFL Countdown
7pm     Live Minnesota at Cleveland - NFL
10pm    Live Washington at NY Giants - NFL
1:30am    NFL Yearbook - 2008 Green Bay Packers
2am     Live Chicago at Green Bay - NFL

Unfortunately Bears-Packers is too late for me, as we have a SOX audit starting with a kick off meeting at 9:30 am with out SOX guy from UK.

Monday (or rather Tuesday morning over here):
11pm     Live Monday Night Countdown
1am     Live Buffalo at New England - Monday Night Football - NFL
4:30am   Live San Diego at Oakland - Monday Night Football - NFL

I may catch Chargers-Raiders if I get up an hour earlier than usual and go to work at 8 am.

We get Jaguars - Colts (7pm) and Cards - 49ers(10pm) on sunday
Bills - Pats(1am) and Chargers - Raiders(4.30am) on monday

All but the late sunday game are in HD, that fact coupled with the retarded commentators they have on that channel makes me want to skip seeing Fitzgerald suffer the Madden Curse.

Best NFL coverage ever. Fan-fucking-tastic.

In Germany, Premiere (now Sky) pay tv used to show football games, but they completely stopped that. Austrian ORF shows the occasional game (usually starting in play offs). Other than that I'm at the mercy of ESPN America (http://www.espnamerica.com/), though their coverage is pretty ok, with additional background shows and live games re-run next day. It's not in HD; but as I don't have an HD tv I don't mind. They also cover live College Football, MLB, NHL and college Basketball, plus a few other things during "dry times" (e.g. Lacrosse). They don't show NBA live, but I don't care for that, anyways.

Well, I did grow up in a town with a small American base, and me and a friend spent plenty time with a couple American kids, esp. two Rican brothers. We played baseball on the large place behind my school, traded soccer stickers vs. NFL Topps cards and played on C64 and NES. I had 4th & Inches, Super Sunday, Championship Baseball, Microleague Baseball and Street Sports Baseball. My brother in law caused me to root for Pittsburgh in sports. Problem was coverage, usually. I don't follow much a sport I can't catch on TV. Watching highlights or reading scores and recaps on the net isn't the same.

lol, even the Chiefs beat writers have a sense of forboding...

QuoteHaley and Pioli talk tough; Ravens play too tough

You ever write a check your rear end couldn't cash?

If so, you know how Todd Haley is going to feel at noon today when he and the Chiefs square off against Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens.

The check was written months ago, when Haley told Kansas City's best player that 22 guys off the street could win two games. The check grew larger from there, each time first-time general manager Scott Ego-li treated a Kansas City Chiefs employee like football was invented in New England.

There's nothing wrong with writing a big check. You have to in Haley and Ego-li's line of work. You bet big to win big.

But you also need the resources to back up your tough talk or risk looking like a fool.

Today is our first real opportunity to look beyond the bluster. Haley and Ego-li spent the offseason bullying everyone at Arrowhead Stadium and acting like they knew more about winning football than Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry and Chuck Noll combined.

If Haley and Ego-li couldn't intimidate you, they demoted or eliminated you from the organization. In pursuit of changing a culture of mediocrity, thus far Haley and Ego-li have replaced it with a culture of fear.

Fear, some coaches say, is the ultimate motivator. Confidence, all coaches agree, is the key to establishing consistent, high-level performance. Can fear and confidence coexist?

Kansas City's 2009 season will serve as a test of this question.

There's little reason to expect a positive answer today. Drawing Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and the Baltimore defense as a first test is extreme bad luck.

My wish for today is that Haley has the discipline to put his ego away and feed Brodie Croyle to the Ravens defense. M&T Bank Stadium is not the location to unveil a half-healthy Sixty Million Dollar Man.

If Matt Cassel and his injured knee are under center this afternoon, then you know ego has trumped common sense along the Kansas City sideline.

I know. Everyone thought the Chiefs were going to get thumped in their season opener last season at New England. I know. The NFL is the most unpredictable league in all of sports. I know. You never go into a game planning on losing.

There are few certainties in life or sports. Ray Lewis and the Baltimore defense showing up salty on opening day can officially be added to death and taxes.

Given the sorry state of the right side of Kansas City's offensive line and the mediocrity of KC's receiving corps, I feel confident at least one Chiefs quarterback will be helped from the field today.

Lewis and Reed can do whatever they want today. They can leave the corners on an island to play man to man and attack the quarterback with blitzes. They can rush four and drop seven in coverage. Right now, Kansas City's offense is an all-you-can-eat buffet, and Lewis just needs to decide if he's going to pig out on crab legs or chicken wings.

Last year, the Chiefs played New England close simply because Bernard Pollard delivered a lucky shot to Tom Brady's knee, ending the season of the league's top player before the first quarter expired. The Patriots had to regroup emotionally and strategically.

Short of Baltimore defenders showing up for the game drunk, I can't envision a scenario in which things go well for the Chiefs.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope the Chiefs shock the world, win today and 10 more.

But the goal this afternoon should be survival and leaving Avon Barksdale's city with the tools required to beat Oakland next weekend inside Arrowhead Stadium.

There's too much risk and not enough reward for putting Cassel in harm's way at Baltimore. Can the Chiefs upset the Ravens with Cassel at quarterback? No. The Ravens, 11-5 last year, are two-touchdown favorites and an ascending team.

The confident move would be to sit Cassel. If Haley is scared, he'll foolishly rush his franchise quarterback onto the field in a transparent bid to show he's as fearless (and dumb) as his offseason tough talk.

I wouldn't worry.  Sanchez has 'bust' written all over him.  Remember when the media was trying to convince us that Brady Quinn was a good QB?  It had the same feel as Sanchezmania.  Every time a good-looking guy gets drafted in the first round at QB, it's media frenzy time.

The KC-Baltimore game was unnecessarily close, although 14 of KC's points came off a blocked punt and an INT return that took them inside the 5 yard line.

I never thought I'd live to see the day a Ravens team would roll up over 500 yards of total offense.  Everybody contributed on offense today.

As a Raider fan, you've got bigger things to worry about than other teams' quarterbacks.  Like, I dunno, counting how many draft busts like Robert Gallery the Raiders still have on the team.

I mean Fabian Washington, no wait, I mean Philip Buchanon, make that Tyler Brayton, or perhaps Napoleon Harris, even Derrick Gibson.  See, I have time to root for other teams QB's because my team is out of it by week 2, so I have plenty of time to look around.

Here is something for Seedy:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/14/ravens-offense-explodes-on-and-off-the-field/

QuoteRavens offense explodes, on and off the field
Posted by Mike Florio on September 14, 2009 9:08 AM ET

For nearly a decade under offensive genius Brian Billick, the Ravens were a team that typically won football games by keeping the opposing team as close to the egg of a goose as possible.

Now, in year two after Billick's departure, the offense is starting to look like it was supposed to look throughout his tenure.

Indeed, the 38 points that Baltimore scored on Sunday represents more than any scored during the last year of Billick's tenure, when the team scored 30 points once and less than 20 half the time.

And the Ravens are also becoming explosive off the field, too.

According to Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com, the Ravens didn't take kindly to remarks from Keyshawn Johnson and Cris Carter in a recent conference call, during which Johnson at one point said of quarterback Joe Flacco, "You want a bum, you pay a bum."

"Keyshawn Johnson is the bum, that's why he's in the analyst seat," receiver Derrick Mason told Freeman.  "He tried to come back to football but no one would sign him.  He was never that good a player.  He got lucky and signed on in Tampa Bay and won a Super Bowl because they had a great defense.

"Just look at the two people doing the criticizing, that's all I'm saying.  Keyshawn was overrated and Carter is in the same boat I'm in.  He doesn't have a Super Bowl ring either.  He's in the analyst seat without a ring.  At least I'm playing.  He still wants to play but he can't anymore.  We're the bums?  That's why you're in the analyst seat.  Just be quiet and keep dreaming you still could play."

(Mason really needs to come out of his shell.)

Apart from the 38 points on the scoreboard and the all points bulletin on Keyshawn's playing career, the Ravens rang up 501 yards of total offense, and they surrendered only 188.

So if the Baltimore ball-moving unit is waking up at a time when the defense is still playing great, they could be a very serious contender in the AFC, again.

That said, there's also a chance that the Chiefs are still really, really bad, and that the Ravens will struggle against the likes to the Chargers, Patriots, Vikings, Colts, Steelers (twice), Packers, and Bears.

More on the Chiefs-Ravens game is coming later today, One-Liner style.

Here is something for Seedy:

One thing I will say, the Ravens are very protective of each other.  Mason doesn't like to hear his QB dissed.

501 total yards offense yesterday.  5.0.1.

And as far as it being the Chiefs, KC was 5-0 on the road in Mobtown, and the Ravens never cover double digit spreads in September, ever.  Jimmy the Greek was smiling from above.  As he once said, "but that's the way to bet".
Title: Re: NFL Week 1 Thread
Post by: Neil on September 14, 2009, 07:55:21 PM
501 yards.  Even the score-running up '07 Gaytriots only broke 500 once, against the hapless Bills.

Not only that, but I was impressed with the offence's ability to make plays when the going got tough.  Two years ago, the Ravens wouldn't come back from behind, let alone put up 3 TDs in the fourth, unless the defence was doing the scoring.  Flacco is good.

And he was unable to hang on to it.  I don't know why it's bullshit that it's called an incomplete pass when the ball is rolling around on the ground under the WR (it's actually laying on the ground, gets knocked up towards his chest by his knee and he picks it back up, you can see it in one of the angles. 10:37 on my DVR).  I guess I could try to screencap it for you if you want, but I've never done that before.  Sucks for the rookie not getting his first TD, but there will be others, I'm sure.

Hey, thanks Raiders.

QuoteAKLAND, Calif. -- San Diego Chargers center Nick Hardwick injured his left foot in Monday night's 24-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders and left the Coliseum on crutches and wearing a walking boot.

"I'm fine," Hardwick said afterward, noting he wanted to wait for an official injury report to provide more detail. "I'm emotionally stable."

Star running back LaDainian Tomlinson rolled his ankle, but it wasn't considered serious.

Hardwick was carted off the field midway through the third quarter. He went down blocking on a pass play and was examined for several minutes before leaving.

San Diego also lost right guard Louis Vasquez earlier in the third quarter with a knee injury. He was taken to the locker room.

That left the Chargers with no extra offensive linemen because they only dressed seven.

"I don't know if I've ever been in a game where more guys had to leave the game," coach Norv Turner said. "We took a calculated risk and only had seven linemen up. Things got tight there."

If someone else had gone down, Turner would have turned to fullback-tight end Brandon Manumaleuna to play tackle.

"I don't know what we would have done. We might have had to dress a coach," right tackle Jeromey Clary said.

Turner said he would know more about the injuries Tuesday, but wasn't overly concerned. San Diego has a quick turnaround to face Baltimore at home on Sunday.

BA you are too young, but you don't root for the Raiders, not the real Raiders.  The Raiders were taken from us in 1982 by a crazy man who grabbed our innocence off of 880 and drove south were he kept them for over a decade in a huge abandoned lot.  The team that was eventually returned to us was not the Raiders, and that crazy man has never been punished.

Sure, they look like them, in a way, but they are not the Raiders, that innocence was stolen.  Ask Seedy if the Colts came back if they would be the same.  The answer is no.  Maybe, one day, the scars of that crazy man can be erased, but not now...not for a long time.

Alas Peedy, I had no choice in the matter.  Though, looking at my baseball team picking abilities, I would have done as bad or worse in picking a team.  Hell, I've been rooting for the Browns unless they're playing the Raiders for the past 3 years.  I am a walking Jinx. :(

Good teams make their own luck.

Do they? Or do the refs invent rules for them?

No rules controversy last night a team that is used to winning made a play against a team that is used to losing. (https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi195.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz133%2Fsbr32%2Fsmilies%2Fshrug.gif&hash=192f9aca171f53ae2576f66866352c133c7ea785)

QuoteWhat? A fumble? No, Brady just meant to "tuck" it in.

That was a fucked play, but the correct call according to the rule at the time.  Once the QB's arm goes forward his intention becomes irrelevant.  Also if the NFL was going to rig that game back in 2002 they would have made sure the Raiders won it, not the Patriots.  The Raiders were actually good back then and the Patriots were a joke up until mid-season that year.
QuoteWhat? Stopped by the Ravens defense? No, we'll give you the time out AFTER the play.

I just found this play and watched it again.  It is very clear that the officail tries to stop the play before the ball is snapped.  If you actually care check 3:45 on this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbjWoiqyCZs&feature=related
QuoteHuh? Poor Tom's knee hurts? We'll make sure defensive players have to get up again to hit a QB.  Ask Carson Palmer how he feels about that one.

I don't like the rule either, but it is what it is.  The Palmer and Brady injuries aren't really comparable either.  The Steeler rolled into Palmer's leg; the Chief who hurt Brady was on the ground and clearly lunged at Brady's knee.  The first is football, the second is now illegal.

Again if you care:

Palmer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGcNRb5WI1g)

Brady (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7aVe_Ge09U)

QuoteFucking Steelers have nothing on these fucks when it comes to collusion with the league.

They may get some calls that other teams don't but that isn't the sole reason for their success, they are just better than most teams, from the front office to the coach to the players.

It appears the Patriots [team stats] have dodged a bullet with linebacker Jerod Mayo's right knee injury.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick said tonight that he doesn't believe Mayo's injury is season-ending.

"I don't think that's what it is," Belichick said on a conference call with reporters. "Tomorrow when we have the practice report, I'm going to provide you with details on that."

The Saints got lucky.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/15/league-decides-not-to-suspend-saints-players-for-now/
QuoteLeague decides not to suspend Saints players, for now

Posted by Mike Florio on September 15, 2009 6:18 PM ET
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has decided not to implement, for now, the four-game suspensions imposed last year against Saints defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant for using an over-the-counter supplement known as StarCaps, which unknown to the players had been spiked with a banned substance.

In a news release, the league office explained that the suspensions "will not be enforced at the present time."

"This situation presents several unique and narrow aspects that I believe call for us to put the good of the game ahead of questions of discipline," Commissioner Roger Goodell said in the release.  "Considerations of fairness, uniform application of our policies, and competitive integrity all support deferring the suspensions at this time.  I am not prepared to treat players differently when the same conduct is involved."

The problem is that Vikings defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams, who also used StarCaps, have managed to avoid the suspensions via the assertion of legal theories arising under Minnesota statutory law.  Though there is no current impediment to the imposition of the suspensions on Grant and Smith, the concern is that different outcomes would be realized for the same behavior.

"Our primary goal is to maintain the effectiveness and integrity of our program, which has repeatedly been recognized as among the finest in all of sports," Goodell said.  "An important part of that program has been a tradition of fairness for players and clubs, with all players knowing they are held to a common standard.   Because the Minnesota and New Orleans players committed the same violation and had their appeals resolved at the same time, I believe the appropriate step is to defer the suspensions while we pursue both our legal options and continue discussions with the NFLPA."

The Minnesota litigation involving Kevin and Pat Williams will most likely not be resolved until after the 2009 season.  If the league wins that case, then the suspensions against all players who took StarCaps undoubtedly would be imposed.

Meanwhile, the league arguably vented some frustration over today's outcome by throwing more stones at the union for fighting the suspensions in the first place.

"Now that the courts have rejected the NFLPA's improper challenge to our collectively bargained program, we hope the union will join us in ensuring that these principles of fairness and uniformity are preserved," Goodell said.  "The union's unfortunate refusal to do so thus far has created needless uncertainty for our program.  This is an important issue not only for the NFL, but for all sports and everyone who cares about the integrity of sports competition.  This is why the other professional leagues and the USADA supported us in this case. "

Bottom line?  Barring some type of a settlement that vacates the potential suspensions and closes the loophole on which the Vikings players relied, the fate of the Saints' players will be tied directly to whether the lawsuit brought by the Vikings' players prevails.

I don't really understand your point here.  Yes, they lost to a very good team on a one in a lifetime play by by two players - Manning and Tyree, which was their only loss of the year.  Should they really be ashamed of that?  They did win 3 other Super Bowls in the 6 years prior to that; that seems decent.

Prior to last year the Lions had sold out every home game since moving to Ford Field.  Now:

Quote4,000 tickets remain for Lions' home opener

Tim Twentyman / The Detroit News
Allen Park -- The Lions say there are approximately 4,000 tickets remaining for their home opener against the Vikings on Sunday.

The Lions have until 1 p.m. Thursday to sell those tickets for the game to be shown locally on Fox. If the Lions are close to a sellout by Thursday's deadline, they could be extended a 24-hour deadline by the NFL.

The Lions did not sell out Ford Field in five of their last six games last season and were subject to local television blackout in those games.

The last team to have its home opener blacked out was Week 2 of the 2005 season when the St. Louis Rams played at the Arizona Cardinals.

It's a shame too, since this will be Favre best game this season.

God I hope so.  I want nothing more than Bart Scott and David Harris beating the crap out of Brady all game especially after that damn "Brady rule" that's on the books.

Unfortunately the Jets always find some way to fuck up the home opener against the Pats.  Also Peter King picked the Jets to win.  That's almost as bad as Timmy taint.  I'm expecting the Pats to blow the Jets out now.

Hhhmmmmm....

QuoteSan Diego's high-powered offense took a double hit Friday when the Chargers said both running back LaDainian Tomlinson and center Nick Hardwick will miss Sunday's game against the Ravens with ankle injuries.

The Chargers' injury report listed eight players this week after a physical, 24-20 win over the Oakland Raiders on Monday night. Also scratched is backup defensive tackle Travis Johnson with a groin injury.

The Ravens said all week they expected Tomlinson to play. But coach John Harbaugh said the Chargers are wel-stocked at the position. "If [Tomlinson doesn't play], Michael Bennett can play," Harbaugh said on Friday. "Of course, [Darren] Sproles, everybody has been taking about him all week, but Michael Bennett can play. We've seen him before in the past, too. They've got a whole bevy of backs."

Earlier in the week, Chargers coach Norv Turner talked about playing against the Ravens' defense.

"We appreciate how good the Ravens are on defense," Turner said. "When you look at them, they're one of the most balanced teams in this league, and I understand why a lot of people are picking them to do great things this year. We've got to do a great job keeping them off [quarterback Philip Rivers]. The best way to do that, obviously, is to get some run going. We want to run the football and we want to have balance."

The Ravens, traditionally one of the NFL's best teams against the run, allowed just 29 rush yards in the season opener.

The Chargers also list three players as questionable: guard Louis Vasquez (knee), defensive tackle Jamal Williams (elbow) and linebacker Antwan Applewhite (hamstring).

Meanwhile, the Ravens listed safety Tom Zbikowski (concussion) as doubtful and tight end L.J. Smith (hamstring) as questionable. Linebackers Terrell Suggs (concussion, chest), Jarret Johnson (shoulder) and Tavares Gooden (knee), and safety Ed Reed (concussion) are listed as probable. Johnson was listed on the injury report for the first time on Friday, but participated fully in practice.
