Title: Fitness 2009
Post by: fhdz on March 23, 2009, 11:38:44 AM
Rawr.

Thanks to a community center membership acquired Friday night, SFG, the kids and I spent the whole weekend in the pool. I'm working on repairing the lung damage caused by so many years of smoking; my current (meager) swimming goal is to be able to swim a half-mile (18 laps) without pausing.  Half a mile is the swimming portion of a sprint-distance triathlon.  Right now I can swim 14 laps but I have to pause for about thirty seconds after every two laps to catch my breath.  I also played some basketball with SFG's son on Saturday.

Right after I get paid next Tuesday, I'm going to FitRight NW and getting some running shoes.  When my tiny tax refund comes in, I'm going to be getting a bicycle off of Craigslist.

I'm also going to be doing yoga classes two mornings a week at the community center.  It's about three blocks away from where I live now. :)

My goal this year is to bring some heavier activity into my daily routine. Haven't decided on a gym or anything yet. slowly working up to it. I've been sedentary so long. harder thing for me to change than diet. Which is light years better than it was 15 months ago( and 70lbs ago)

I need to tone up... but I'm kinda scared of becoming too manly looking. Yes I'm weirder than you.

It's warming up around here and there's a park right across the street from my neighborhood. I've taken to running around the whole thing several times a week. Feels great.  :)

I am using my YMCA membership alot this year.  17 pounds of fatness have been shed.

I fell off the wagon last week because of compulsive Mount & Blade playing but this week I shall return.

I am planning to pick up swimming again this year - will give it a try and see if it causes any problems with my prostatitis. If it will, I will go back to aerobics and similar exercises.

I am pretty much happy with my weight at the moment (I could lose about 2-3 kilos more, but it's fine where it is nonetheless) but now I need some toning around my chest, arms and stomach.

You want lots of cardio, very little weight training.  It will build up your heart and give you some tone, without building much muscle mass.

Running is probably the easiest and cheapest way.

Congrats, man! :)  I could stand to lose about 12-15 pounds, and then just tone up.

How much did you weigh when you started losing?

215.  I am down to 198.

I really should weigh about 175...and I want to get down around 170 so I can be allowed to go up and down a bit.  That may turn out to be too thin for me but I guess I will find out soon enough and adjust my goals accordingly.

Makes sense.  180's just about right for me; the couple of times in the last two years I've dipped below that, people have asked me if I was feeling all right :D so I took that to mean that 180 seems to fit my frame well.  How tall are you?

5'11"

When I got back from Euro land in 1998 I was at 165 and nobody said I was too thin so I think 170 should be ok.  We shall see.

I dunno what to do.
A few friends are muttering of starting up playing football a lot when the snow melts which will help but I got to do more. Maybe running on the roof pre-sauna or something. I can't afford gym.

My trouble is as always I'm just out of shape. I've got a bit of a gut but I'm not overweight, well within decent levels. Just aesthetics are horrid and have to tackle them as best possible.

Currently at my heaviest ever and finding it really hard to get back into a routine as I just can't keep up with what I used to do. And I had such high hopes for the Sex and Guinness Diet. Sigh.

fahdiz, have you entered a sprint tri to aim for yet? You should. Couple of things to bear in mind, if you're doing an open water swim, you'll need to practise over a much greater distance in the pool when you can't rest at all. If it requires a wetsuit, get at least two sessions in wearing the suit, it's completely different. You should also do a "brick" session at least once a week - back-to-back swim/cycle or cycle/run/ Nothing prepares you for the wobbly legs you get when you rack up your bike and just start running!

Indeed.  I'm shopping this weekend for a good road bike.  One of the local bike stores has a 10K square-foot showroom and everything in the store is 10-40% off through Sunday night.

I got fitted for running shoes last night, so starting tomorrow I'm going to begin an 8-week program which very gradually steps up and will have me running non-stop for 30 minutes by the end of the 2 months.

Swimming continues well - I'm up to a 1/2-mile now with relatively few - and short - breaks.

I missed the first dragon boat practice of the year because I am retarded.  The second practice is tonight - in about three hours in fact - and I will *not* be missing it.

I'm thinking about trying for a triathlon early next year or even late this year.  I would plan for the summer but I think I'm going to need some extra time for my lungs to repair themselves a bit and to build the kind of shape I want to be in.  Thanks for your tips, they're great :)

Oh, by the way - my first dragon boat practice on Friday night went really, really well.  The paddling stroke for a dragon boat is a great workout - the next day I was feeling it in my arms, shoulders, chest, upper abs, and my entire back.  My legs were even feeling it a bit, as there's a lot of isometric pressure coming from bracing your legs so you can get the most power into what is essentially a very short paddling stroke.  Tomorrow's the next practice.

Hey, Fahdiz, nice looking practical bike; certainly better than one or two I've bought over the years.

Good to see it comes with mud flaps, very sensible, much better than drowning because those ruin ones 'urban styling'.  Have you got lights for it yet ?

Good to see no 'suspension', what is it aluminium or steel ? I recently got an aluminium urban type set up and despite it be slightly lighter, I think steel might have been better if frame repairs are ever needed.

I'd guess you'll find yourself positively enjoying clocking up the miles on it.

It's this bike:

The frame's aluminum.  It's pretty light!  I had them put the fenders on because I'm thinking of riding it to work occasionally and don't want to show up at work with a giant stream of mud up my back. :D  I am in Portland, after all, which has very English-style weather.

I don't have lights yet but will within the next couple of months.

I think I'm going to stick with the pedals I have until I get stable and comfortable enough to do clips and clip-in shoes.  I have considered putting some bar ends on the handlebars, though.  One of the things I really, really like about road bikes is the way the handlebars are set up - that was a compromise I had to make in order to get all the benefits of a hybrid bike.  I might consider a "real" road bike or one of those specialized triathlon bikes in a couple of years if I'm still sticking with it.

A word of advice, based on experience of misery and pain, wear padded, stretchy shorts.
They will protect your nutsack and the rather sensitive and tender crotch areas and between the ass and thigh. Else you might be mistaking your crotch for pus-filled hamburger meat.

Yep, "saddle time" is necessary to overcome the initial shock of a bike seat.  I'm doing lots of short rides to strengthen those muscles in order to get over that issue.

Looking at it, yours and my bikes seem fairly similar:

Mine came with bar ends and the few times I've had a play with them they seemed quite usable; though I havne't done enough miles yet to get the geometry set up to suit me or vice versa.

I want to get very, very fit.  I want to work on repairing the years and years of damage I've caused my lungs.  Crosstraining is the best way to do that, and I figure as long as I'm going to be crosstraining anyway I might as well give myself a goal.  Plus, I like all three of the pieces of a triathlon.  I love riding a bike, I love swimming, and now that I have the right shoes I love running too.

I was thiiiiiiiiis close to splurging on a Trek road bike.  I was looking at the 1.2, but I like the 1000 series as well.  I settled instead for the hybrid, which was about half the price.  It's a Gary Fisher, which is owned by Trek anyway.

The 1.2 is a nice bike, just outside my range though.
This really is expensive stuff, what with all the necessary add-ons (shoes, clothes, helmet etc).

Yep, I agree, WTF its not a Languish approved activity.

I ended up getting the bike, the fenders, a water bottle cage, a helmet, a spare tube, and a bike tool (little hex wrenches in a pocketknife-like thing) for about $600.  I didn't buy a jersey; I have workout shirts which will work just fine.  I could stand to buy some bike shorts, though.

Hope you didn't damage the bike, oh and yourself too much; after all you're largely self repairing.  :P

Just a couple of bruises and the bike is ok fortunately. I need some practice in unlocking my shoes in time  :(

Dragon boat practice was nuts last night.  Out of the 18 people we *should* have in the boat (16 paddlers, the caller up front and the tiller in the rear) we had 11.  That's 9 paddlers, not 16. :D  We worked HARD.  My arms and shoulders felt like jello for a couple of hours after practice.  I feel pretty good this morning, though - not sore...

...which is good because tonight I start my 8-week running program.

Here, Trek is affordable (I've had one before), Gary Fisher is improbably highly prices.

Right now, I have one Trek and one Scott bike. I am a bit at loss explaining why.

No, they're comparable in the States.  It's just that "true" road bikes tend to be more expensive than hybrids.  I looked at several hybrids, but eventually it was down to two: a Trek (the 7.2) and a Gary Fisher (the Wingra).  Since they were comparable in almost every way except that the Fisher was $20 more, felt smoother, shifted better, and has a longer tube which accomodates my freakishly long torso allowing me to stretch out a little more, I went with the Fisher.

I see. :)

I think only the specialist models of Gary Fisher are imported here, hence the high prices.

Both my bikes are standard mountain bikes/offroad bikes with shock absorbtion. It's less fun riding them on tarmac or asphalt.

Ah - yeah, I think Gary Fisher *only* used to make mountain bikes.  They've recently started to make road, commuter, and hybrid bikes as well.  I don't know what the US prices are like at all on their mountain bikes, because I wasn't shopping for that.

And it is true that mountain bikes are very inefficient on pavement.

If the one I passed yesterday is anything to go by, then yes;
I popped out to drop something off at a mates house and to go round the block, I was going up a 'paved' hill and this bloke on compact mountain bike wearing all the kit appeared up a head, surprisingly it wasn't long before I came up on him, I could either slow down quite a bit and wait to overtake, because there was quite a bit of traffic about, but I decided to step up a gear and pass him quickly before any more cars appeared on my tail.
As I passed him I said Hi, which I think coming from a bloke wear jeans, sneekers and sweatshirt riding an old knackered hybrid he took as some sort of personal insult, because 20 seconds later I noticed a shadow right up close to my bike, the guy drafted me up the remainder of the hill and all the way down until I pealed of to go a different route.

Don't know what that was all about, maybe I infringed on some cyclist etiquette, all I know is drafting someone you don't know or at least know of and have made you presence know to, is a rather daft thing to do, especially on a public road.

Yup, had to slam on the brakes going into a corner too fast and then I lost it.
At least it's less embarrassing than tipping over at a traffic light because you forgot to release the shoe in time.

Heh, when I used to do a lot of running, years ago, I wore the thinest knackered old cotton socks I could find along with Silver Shadows.

The one thing I *do* know about workout gear in general is that cotton is the devil, and now that we have synthetic fibers which are just as comfortable as cotton, there's no need to wear it when exercising.  I picked up some Nike running socks (all synthetic) at the sporting goods store last night just before my run.  They are great - comfortable, good cushioning, and most importantly kept my feet dry.

I ride to work all year round - January is brrr here on the high plains.  It is only about a 5 mile total round trip, including the biking to my office or to teach class.  I up that once it gets warmer.  Because of the area it is mostly off-road (a ten minute ride gets me to public land, a fifteen minute drive gets me to a state monument with outstanding trails for bikes, a thirty minute drive gets me to the high mountains and the trails there).

Because I bike year round I never have to worry about Bikers-Ass in late Spring.

I see my friend Z has grown up to an athlete. I'm so proud.  Keep it up.
Cross training is the best way to get fitter, burn more calories and minimize injuries. Maybe someday I'll go and run a race with you (does not have to be a full, I'll let you do a half ;)).

Running thirty minutes a day and the machines here.  Hard as fuck, especially with a bout of manorexia.

Are you running for the full 30 minutes?  Or do you take walking breaks?  What's your average distance per 30 min run?
Its on a machine, and I take a two minute break every 11 minute (actually about 36 minutes to account for breaks) to catch breath and drink some water.

Three miles plus, including resistance.  Its a fairly automated machine; set in age, weight, program, time, boom.  Have to admit I am humiliatingly out of shape.

I may train for another marathon this year, but not sure if my knees will appreciate it.  :( Also, nothing like training for one in the B'ham summer, go out for the weekend long run at 5am before the temps go above 90. :melt:

Running program proceeds apace.  I'm stepping up tonight to 3 min run / 1 min walk x 7 (with 2 min of running tacked onto the end to hit 30 min total).

The part which I thought would be easiest at first (given the fact that I used to do it a great deal) is in fact the most difficult for me: swimming.  Turns out that smoking for over a decade fucks up your in-water lung capacity quite a bit. <_<  I'm keeping at it, and it is slowly getting better.  I can swim 900 meters now with only a few breaks.

From what i recall there was only a  handful of people who posted frequently, with the likes of Meri and Brazen being frequent contributors...and since no Meri here and Brazen proclaiming failure you are left all alone fahdizzle. :console:

I'm back. I'll help. :)

I've started following Jeremy's diet, which is very low carbs and about 1800 calories. (Jeremy eats double that in calories, but I'm not a teenage boy.  <_< ) Plus, I'm putting in a 20' x 40' veggie garden, a 5' x 10' herbal garden, and walking at least 30 minutes every day. I'm just starting all of this so no changes yet, but I'm fairly sure I'll notice things in the next few weeks.

For the record,  I am 5'2" and around 180 pounds. (I fluctuate up and down five pounds depending on the time of day, the day of the week, and the way the wind blows.) I should lose about 40 pounds (any more than that and I look sickly since I'm so solidly built, i.e. big-boobed and big-butted), but my goal is only 30 at the moment. I'll reevaluate when that happens.

My REAL goal is to get a 30" waist again... maybe 27", if I really work at it. It was 24" pre-kids, but that just might be really pushing it.

Thanks!

The fun thing is that I wasn't aware I could keep up with the 4.30 minutes/km crowd. I slacked off some the last 8-10 km, but I was still pleasantly surprised. Perhaps I should do more intervals?

Next "big race" is Lidingöloppet. 30 km, with pretty hilly terrain in September.

I came back from my sailing at 21 weighing 170lbs, by 39 I weighed over 320...I was always husky as a kid, but the decline I had was bad.  Now that I bike and walk and work out, the whole weight loss thing is quite nice.

Seven months after surgery now. I'm eating as much as I want* and I can't for the life of me gain weight. But on the other hand I don't lose it, either.
I look quite well, so the only thing that bothers me is I have no stamina. I've gone swimming a couple times, but other than going up and down a few stairs I do no real exercise regularly. I don't feel like it after work, since I get home at 19:15 at the earliest, quite tired already. I need to get a new job with sane working hours, but this is not the best time and I actually like the one I have.  Bah.

*Which is not that much. After a couple years eating pretty much nothing I get sated very, very fast.

So I went for a 30 mile bike ride on Sunday.  Remarkable how much easier it is to move my carcass about with less weight on it...

Oh, I must be the only casual bike riding American who bought a 1500 dollar bike a few years ago who has ridden it enough that the dealer says "I can fix it up some, but this is about done" since all my friends have bikes that just sit there.

That's amazing Peedy! Have you thought about entering some events? Like the public leg of the Tour de France? The Pyrenees would have nothing on your mountain-honed thews!

And and I know about the weight thing, sadly experiencing the opposite right now. Still aerobically fit and strong, just harder to move my fat ass about.

Not really the event type.  I just like to go out and ride - luckily there are plenty of spots here to do just that, ride in the wilderness on trails and not even meet others.  Someday I will tell you my secret to weight loss...but not till I patent it.

Doing this online thingy which helps you plan exercise, monitors your activity with a wrist sensor, records daily weigh-ins  and has you fill in a food diary. Results to date prove I do plenty of exercise but eat and drink about 1000 calories too much a day :P Guess I better do something about that then.

Tonight I'm doing a trial run of the YMCA's indoor tri I've entered - 1,500m* row, 6km cycle and 2km run.

The bloke said I have "fit legs" this weekend. Don't think anyone's every complimented my leggage before

maintaining my 190-195 weight without a ton of exercise apart from 1 or 2  5-10 mile city hikes (read Death Marches) each weekend. reading this thread, though makes me want to get a bike. I want to start doing a bit of running, but don't know if I'm up to it or not. I'm at the point where I just need to lose a lot of flab. most of the weight is gone, and I need to tone up a lot. A lot, if I ever want to go to a beach.

Had to pull out with a shoulder injury, rather embarrassingly caused taking an overloaded rucksack off wrongly while travelling...

Got a hilly 5K in a couple of weeks, and a 10K in September though.

Eight months after surgery and my Crohn's is nowhere to be seen. Bloodwork and barium swallow tests negative, scanner to follow.
I've gained a couple more Kg, I'm up to 65 now. I'm also increasing my physical activities - I've been walking, bowling, playing basketball and karting (damn I love karting). :yeah:

Screwed up back, no biking this week.  I did go hiking at a place called Vedauwoo (google that for some images), so I got a workout climing over rocks.

yeah some friends of mine get that " are you ok?" looks from people who haven't seen them slimmer.

I tend to get good "looks" in that way tho' because I was way unhealthy looking before. bad skin, bags, etc.... I looked my age.

The Good: I tried some old summer shirts and they are far too big for me now. I have lost a lot of volume, specially around the shoulders, and my body seems very definitely more athletic than ever before.

The Bad: I'm stuck around 88 kg. That means I'm getting denser (in a physical sense only, I hope...  ) and that exercise alone is not going to make me lose more weight, I need a harsher diet too. Curse you, Evolution!

The Ugly: Well, actually not. I'm seeing evident improvements in my pectorals, shoulder muscles, and forearms. However, waist, abdominals, legs and biceps are proving quite more difficult...

dont worry so much about weight.  Once you get to this point it is all about body fat percentage.  You may actually increase your weight but decrease your body fat percentage.

I've recovered pretty much the same shape I was in a couple years ago. It's interesting how the body "remembers" that I have always had significant muscle volume, even when I don't get to exercise that much.

Walter White is a bit like you, but Heisenburg, his drug dealing persona, isn't.  You seem to have a lot less anger.  Hence "Fox" attitude.

I discovered last year when I trained for the marathon that my old kness performed better with only 3 days of running but making sure they were quality workouts with purpose. For a 10k you don't need monster miles, you need speedwork. I'm no expert but I guess one day a week of intervals and one day of tempo, one day long run. If you run more than 3 times a week, the other days should be easy recovery days. For any goal I also recommend hills. Also, the training tools on runner's world are decent to come up with a training plan. Good luck.

A marathon runner??? This forum seems to have a lot of fitness freaks considering it drew people from a computer game forum.

Thanks for the input--when I take a couple days off my knees feel a lot better. I was worried that I wouldn't get better on a 3 day schedule, but if it worked for you on a marathon I'm sure it will work on a 10k.

Post by: Lucidor on August 15, 2009, 05:24:50 AM
Doing some running to stay in shape. I am currently in a town in rural Transylvania. My problem is with those free running canines everywhere. They all seem to bark a lot, and from my GF who is a canophobic, I get no sound advice, only that I really shouldn't be outside at all, or just run in the city centre.

I did about 5-6 km along a heavily trafficked main road today, but I am longing for the lush green hills I see everywhere.

What are people's strategies for dealing with loose dogs, "tame" and feral. I don't see too many sheep, so I don't think any of them are overprotective sheepdogs.

Really though, I have no idea.  I sorta swim and sorta bike, neither of which really make me vulnerable to any stray dogs.  Running hurts.  Heh.

Really though, I have no idea.  I sorta swim and sorta bike, neither of which really make me vulnerable to any stray dogs.  Running hurts.  Heh.
:-p

What I'm wondering is if the dogs really just want to bark at you or if they are truly out to get you.

Sadly you have to interrupt your workout if you think it is going to bite you, stop, extend your arms and shout the dog back home. Believe it or not, it works most times. You can't outrun a good size dog if he really wants to get you, but most of the time you can scare him enough to make him stop. If it does not work, you have to kick him, just hope no neighbor sees you and tells on you.

Yesterday I went for a mile long walk and spent two hours in the gym. I hurt all over.  Going to try to do that again 3 more times this week along with a general cut back in food.  Maybe do 1400 calories aday, combined with increased physical activity.

The physical therapy seems to have fixed my rotator cuff/shoulder problem, so barring a blow up on the mound, no surgery needed.

I don't think it is a good idea to cut to just 1400 calories a day while increasing physical activity.

No, not really. But this is an incredibly stressful time at work, and sleep is at a premium. The "ugh" was more about the mornings than the walking.

Joined Weight Watchers on Monday. Parties most nights this week, but I ate dinner before the two I went to last night, so kept my points down. It really makes it hard to stick to anything, though, when you're running around most of the time. <_<

First weigh-in: down 4.4 pounds. :yeah:

First goal: get down to the weight I was when I met Max. Twenty-three pounds to go.

Walking 20-40 minutes every day. Eating far fewer calories than before, and even having a hard time eating as much as I'm supposed to.

Almost a year has passed since I went under the knife. Latest blood tests confirm I'm still in complete remission. One of the bilirubin indicators is slightly high*, but every other marker is right on target, including iron, B12 and folic acid.
Which is kind of puzzling, since I'm not taking supplements anymore and logic dictates I should absorb less of those nutrients than a couple years ago (even if I had damaged walls I also had more of the relevant intestinal surface and ate a lot more, including things like lentils or spinach which are off-limits now).

*Apparently having no distal ileum screws up bilirubin cycle so I guess that might be it.

Down 5.6lbs in three weeks. It's amazing how a simple thing like measuring your servings out can make a difference. I am trying very hard to stay on a lean diet as well, but mostly just watching how much goes in. And walking every day.

Slow and steady, right?

Today, c. 50 min walking, 30 min swimming (30 lengths, only 2 crawl)
Height: 5ft 10/11, weight: c. 12 stone 12

It is for me. If I did as much exercising as you've been doing, I'd drop weight without changing anything I ate. As it is, I can't find the time to get in that much exercise, so I diet as well as exercise the small amounts I can.

Getting fit techy style. Downloaded free CardioTrainer (GPS distance, mapping, calories, elevation and step counter) and Calorie Counter (it even has a bar code scanner using the phone's camera) apps for my phone, Combined with hopping on the exercise bike every other evening I'm burning at least 300 extra calories a day combined with healthier food at work and a minor reduction in boozing everything's going the right way.

Had a nice walk to and along the Thames at lunchtime, inhaling all the lovely North Circular fumes.

I find out at the end of the month if I've got a London Marathon place...

I've been failing horribly at fitness lately. Big lunches and snacking in the evening, plus I haven't done any jogging or real working out since I came to Korea. I play soccer every friday, and try to walk to and from school (1 mile), but I've also been slacking off on the pushups and situps.

I should check my weight sometime. I had been around 180-190 when I came here; I may have dropped a bit during the summer but I think I'm back around 190. Worse, I could be near 200. :weep:

:w00t:

Down 3.8 pounds this week, to hit my 5% goal weight, and which makes it a total of 10.4 pounds lost in six weeks. I may actually weight less than my husband again! ^_^

Even better, I've lost 3 inches off my waist, two inches off my hips and thighs, and - much to Max's dismay - two inches off my bust. My knees don't ache like they had been, and the high-blood-pressure headaches are pretty much gone. I have more energy and the depression that I had been struggling with hasn't reared its head in some time now.

At this rate (averaging 1.7lbs/week), I'll be 30 pounds lighter by my 40th birthday. At 5'2", that's a huge difference. Yay me!

I'm having my arm twisted to give another triathlon a go, though. But the one my friends are all entering has the same cycle distance for the fun, sprint and pull events - 23km :S

What are the distances for swimming and running?
Fun - 200m, 2.5km
Sprint - 400m, 5km
Full... oh wait, that's all they have :)

hmmm I'm still struggling to do more regular exercise activity. The weight has been steadily under 190 though for about two month now. Next week when I take a week off work. I'm going to try and do some cardio every day.

I've been so depressed that work and the sofa are the only places I've been recently.

Sprint could be fun, if you give it all from the start.

cool. by comparison I did 42km in 2:40 on trails and in traffic.  I keep on finding more wind the longer I bike.
Running? That's good. I'll attempt the local marathon in October, if just to prove to myself I'm not completely out of shape.

hell, no. biking! mix of off road, up hills, on trails and then in homicidal city traffic. it's exercise in the real world, red lights and all. :D

... it stuns me people can run that fast.

Went for a quick swim at lunchtime. Could have done without the fellow "fluffing" himself down his shorts in the "changing village"

Half an hour plod over the Thames and down to Kew garden. Knocked half a minute of my pre-mile average :w00t:

Squeeeeee!!!

After eight years of trying to get in, I've been awarded a London Marathon place running for the Alzheimer's Society, a cause very close to my heart.

No exercise for me lately.

I miscalculated a fast bend while going indoor karting. It was the first lap of the race, and it turns out the kart I had picked had cable-actuated brakes, while the one I had used during qualifying had hydraulic brakes. I took the fastest bend of the circuit exactly as I had up to that point, but with weaker brakes, I was too fast and hit the protective gas-pipes sideways at significant speed.

I don't think I've got any ribs broken, fortunately. My ribcage hurts a bit during night and especially mornings. It hurt a lot after a fun dinner with my workmates last Friday though, I guess due to all the laughing. At first it also hurt where the ribs join the spine when I twisted or bended the back.

Ten days mostly lost due to the flu'

But my weight seems stable and today I have started with some weight lifting again.

Somehow - and this is becoming a recurrent theme - when I concentrate my efforts in some direction, I get better results in another field. After two months of trying to improve my biceps and triceps, I have made some progress but the improvements are far more visible in my back and my shoulders.

Returned to my running group yesterday. I found it very hard, but perservered. Our coach, who started running at 40 and is veteran world marathon gold medallist , is going to design a programme for me.

Definitely feeling the benefit, and people are noticing. 8lbs down and, after a brief yet horrifying sojourn into "obese", my BMI is back into the merely "overweight" category  :Embarrass: I know from experience it'll all suddenly feel a lot easier when there's less junk in the trunk.

Who would have thunk it?!?

Hiking 3-8 miles per day for week with 50lbs of camera equipment on my back would result in me dropping 15lbs in said week

I went roofing on Friday. Couldn't walk for two days after. My bicycle-bred general stamina helped, but it's very leg different muscles. Ouch.

Just call me oldmanganesh.

That seems a bit excessive considering people can capture motion with their cell phones these days.

I can safely safe the images when shooting HD with a $80,000 camera and a 850mm zoom lens are bit better than any cell phone camera ;)

Yeah, I know. Just figured the high quality cameras would have been more miniaturized than that.

Well the camera itself with normal lens wasn't so bad, it was when we had the 850mm zoom lens attached. That lens was about half the weight of camera.

And with such a zoom lens to get any stable shot we (well I) had to carry the 35lb tripod, that in conjunction with 4-5 spare batteries (they weighed about 3-4 lbs each), extra hd video tapes, binoculars, rain coat...made for full pack.

Half an hour interval session on the dreadmill - 3 mins running, 2 mins walking. At the moment I'm so fat I burn a calorie every 10 metres  :weep:

Did my lunchtime route (about 2.5 miles). Felt really slow and heavy, but was actually the fastest I've done it :)

Just realised I've entered a triathlon three weeks after the marathon :bleeding:

Who'd have thought it, poverty is good for fitness. I've lost 5kg over the past few months somehow and a bit of my gut. I blaim: not being able to afford beer and pizza.

Eight miles, run 3, walk 2 minutes.

I have to confess I seriously wobbled over this one. I had contemplated doing it all on the dreadmill, but I find it so much harder, hotter and boring than real life. I considered finding a flat, clear road and running up and down it, but couldn't track down even a mile's worth. I thought seriously about giving up.

But I strapped on my new shoes with my extra bouncy insoles, dug out my Garmin, cued up The News Quiz and headed out towards what passes for countryside hereabouts.

After less than a mile, the dry pavements ran out. The first slug of slush that I kicked up onto my shiny white uppers soaked straight through my socks. Not long after, things got more rural, pavements got narrower, the way got more hilly and the slush got deeper, slippier and more in my shoes.

My half-way turning point hadn't come when I ran out of footpath entirely, so I diverted through the golf club for a bit. Deserted and white as far as the eye could see. I'd have relished it more if it hadn't started snowing again at that point...

The Garmin stopped receiving the satellite signal and refused to try again after 6.93 miles, so just as well I was doing an out-n-back and was past halfway! My phone seems more reliable at getting location signals (it uses wi-fi too), but it's a bit bulky when I want to travel light.

I came back numb from the waist downward and it took a half hour bath to feel human again. My new shoes look like they've lived a little now.

Disappointingly it took me a full two hours – the pace of a fast walk. But given the conditions I'm bloomin' proud of myself for doing it at all. I'm slightly dreading the fact it's just going to get further and harder every week until April though :S

Rehydrating with a nice Cabernet now. I may just live!
