It'd be nice if people spent more than 1 term in a major office before running for president.

How the fuck does leaving office early help her Presidential aspirations? Don't run for re-election, sure. But resigning is a pretty clear sign of weakness.

I still like Palin, but WTF?

I can see not running for a second term (although even then that sounds like a good idea to continue to build credibility).  But to simply resign?  Why?

SARAH BARRACUDA! :w00t:
The way for the team to win is for her to sit on the bench.  She's like a fifth safety for Team GOP.  The only way she should be on the field is if someone goes down on special teams.  And even then, she shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the ball.  At best, she's a gunner.  More likely, she's going to get cut, and she'd be lucky to be the waterboy.

Maybe she can be quarterback for one of the smaller parties, like the Libertarians or the Constitution Party.  Insanity is what those guys live for.

Palin's the one who put the her family in the national spotlight. She brought us such national gems as: OMG I HAS A RETURD BABI and LOL ABSTINENCE WORKS. Then there's the whole secessionist husband aspect. Can it really get any better?

The Palin Song (with apologies to Warren Zevon's "Hit Somebody!")

She was born in Big Beaver by the borderline
She started playing hockey by the time she was nine
Her dad took the hose and froze the back yard
And Little Sarah dreamed she was Rocket Richard
She grew up big and she grew up tough
She saw herself scoring for the Wings or Canucks
But she wasn't that good with a puck

Sarah's real talent was beating people up
Her heart wasn't in it but the crowd ate it up
Through city council runs, and the PTA
She must have racked up more than six KIA
A scout from McCain came down pretty soon
Said, "There's always room on our team for a goon
Gal, we've always got room for a goon"

There were Pawlenties to the left of her
Hucks to the right
A Romney at the blue line looking for a fight
Brains over brawn--that might work for you
But what's an Alaska farm gal to do?
What else can a farm gal from Alaska do?

"Hit somebody!" was what the crowd roared
When Sarah the goon came over the boards
"John," she'd say, "I wanna score debates"
The big guy said "Sarah, remember how you rate
The smart guys get paid, I shoot andI score
Protect me, Sarah, that's what you're here for"

Protection is what you're here for
Protection--it's the stars that score
Protection--kick somebody's ass
Protection--don't give us any sass.
"Hit someone, Sarah!" it rang in her ears
Blood on the trail ran down through the years
The queen of the goons with head fulla turds
A thousand speeches and broken words
She never lost a fight in her icy legislates
But deep inside, Sarah only dreamed of debates
She just wanted one debate.

There was Huckster at the the blue line
Pawlenty at the red
Obama with a stick heading straight for her head
Brains over brawn--that might work for you
But what's an Alaska farm gal to do?
What else can a farm gal from Alaska do?

In her final election, on her final night
Sarah and a Huck goon were pegged for a fight
Thirty seconds left, the poll took a skate
And suddenly Sarah had a shot at a debate

The Dems all committed, Sarah picked her spot
Twenty years of waiting went into that shot
The fans jumped up, the Huck jumped too
And cold-cocked Sarah on his follow through.

The big gal crumbled but she felt all right
'Cause the last thing she saw
was the returns from the polls that night
She saw that heavenly sight

There were Blue Dogs to the left of her
Nazis to the right
A Centrist at the blue line looking for a fight
Take care of your teeth--that might work for you
But what's an Alaska farm gal to do?
What else can a farm gal from Alaska do?

It did wonders for John Edwards career after he didn't bother running for Senate re-election in NC because he spent so much time trying to run for VP. Perhaps this will help Palin as well er minus the having a little something on the side like John.

I didn't read all of this yet. But Palin wasn't going anywhere as a Pres candidate. Not even as VP. She had been so vilified, was so polarizing that she had a long way to go to gain enough gravitas to be taken seriously by enough people. I like her ok but I just feel she was damaged goods; did too much damage to herself, plus I feel the media frenzy was pretty heavy handed.
She was like Hillary Clinton but Hillary gained respect and some gravitas, though very polarizing, or formerly was.

I do think Palin might get into being a voice for Repubs or for Conservative ideas, something like that. Out of the limelight of governorship, i fthat would work out. It's been also said that she racked up a lot of costs in all the (failed) ethics investigations, so the talk circuit might be good way fo rher to make money.

I think there's something to that. Certainly, I think she threatened some deeply ingrained stereotypes of Republicans (ie old, white, male) and drew some flak for that.

She was also, however, entirely unfit for public offices; something she proved everything she opened her mouth. Her campaign quickly descended into farce, even without Tina Fey's help.

I don't think the GOP wants anyone at the minute.  Understandably given that the next Presidential election isn't for another 3 years.  My impression, though, is that her support in the GOP is a bit like her nationwide appeal.  I think she's got incredibly passionate supporters, but not across a broad base.

Fixed that for ye.  McCain of course made matters worse by first locking her away and letting the msm spin define the narrative, and then throwing her to the wolves by setting her up for interviews with the same hostile MSM that had originally defamed her.  Gross incompetence on the McCain campaign.

The GOP rallied around her for three reasons: First, she is HOTT.  Second, she has been a reform republican quite outside the mold of the inside-the-beltway establishment GOP.  And most importantly, she was hated by all the right people.  It is that last factor that has been her greatest benefit to date.

Please, nobody in all of the nation acts dumber than Joe Biden.

McCain won the polls in September after he selected Palin and electrified the country.

Um...that was when she was an unknown and the MSM hadn't gone into overdrive creating a fake image of her to smear her with.

Even you don't believe that.  Getting asked "what kind of magaizines do you read" is hardly a tough question.

And the "MSM" sure didn't make her look like an ignorant dumbass during the VP debate. She did that all by herself.

The wife thing is stepping into Fireblade territory. Not even the moral majority gave a rat's ass. The amount of scandals going on was nothing special and effected both parties. Iraq was going relatively well for the entire pre-election period.

Let's not forget Obama's connections to the Wright/Ayers/Farrakhan tripartite of evil, his mooslimb middle name, "bitter", "cling to guns and religion", etc...

Answering a question of tastes in literature, musics, movies, etc. is no simple task. Judgments of identity are quickly gleaned from such answers.

For example, when courting a female, it is much easier to establish a connection if you share the same interests and can later take her to a concert or movie.
Blacks determine if I am black enough for them if they notice I listen to hip hop. Whereas old white folk fear me if they catch me playing that shit.
Meanwhile, hicks warm up to me, and we sing along to country music. I am no longer a "threatening minority" to them.

Do you remember in school the nerds who walk around with their big books/novels in between classes trying to look pretentious or perhaps oblivious?

Thus, it is no simple matter when someone asks you about books, music, or what you watch. They will categorize you, and Palin obviously was not coached in how to respond to such "simple" questions.

Clinton won by more electoral votes than Obama in 1992 (200+), but only beat Bush, Sr. in the popular vote by less than 3 percentage points. EVs do not reflect popularity. Reagan swooped into the White House with an almost 10-point popular margin.

The majority of rural and suburban white voters are racists. If Obama weren't some half-breed mongrel, he'd have attracted far more Southern crossovers (or hell, even Southern Democrats!), as Reagan did in the North.

So there were plenty of people dead-set against the guy. Thus, if McCain just did a little better campaigning, or the economy had not crashed, he could have very well gained those three percentage points that would have won him the election. Obama was a lucky bastard.

Reagan was up against the incumbent Carter who was deeply disliked by many people by 1980. If Obama was against Bush in 2008 there might have been a similar margin.

Please, nobody in all of the nation acts dumber than Joe Biden.
The difference is everyone knew Biden before he was picked for VP.  I said shortly after the Palin pick that she had to be very, very careful because her public persona still wasn't defined.  So if her and Biden made identical stupid comments the response to Biden would be 'that's Biden' while it would be damaging to Sarah Palin because she had no other reputation.  I don't think her first month or so helped her and I don't think her behaviour since has, either.

She wasn't thrown to the wolves in terms of interviews.  I believe she had 2-3 weeks before her first interview and when you're running for one of the highest offices in the country then you should be able to face the media well before then.  She, to my knowledge, never held a press conference of any type.  McCain's fault wasn't that he mishandled her but that he picked her at all.

I'm not entirely anti-Palin (though of Evangelical friendly pols I prefer Huck), I think that if she'd had a couple more years in Alaska and spent some time working out her opinions on foreign policy she would've been a very persuasive Republican VP nom.  I thought, until last week, that if she buckled down, racked up some real achievements in her state, if she worked out her foreign policy ideas and if she, every couple of months, turned up on a Sunday news show to remind everyone that she exists, that she'd be a very persuasive Republican Presidential candidate in 2016, if not 2012 (I don't know if it's possible to do what you need to in the lower 48 if you're in Alaska).  I think she's thrown that out of the window and it's not enough to attack the media and Democrats for this.

Edit:  And I don't know about the 'stress getting to her family' idea.  I mean this very month she was posing in a magazine with Trig and doing interviews.  That that was going on and the sheer amateurish lack of preparation on her speech suggests that this was far more impulsive than a long-growing concern for her family.  Though that may well have been a large part of her decision.

QuoteAnswering a question of tastes in literature, musics, movies, etc. is no simple task. Judgments of identity are quickly gleaned from such answers.
It wasn't about literature or that sort of thing.  The question was about which newspapers and magazines she reads.  I think she said all of them, whatever her staff put in front of her and that though Americans think Alaska's so far away they do indeed have magazines.

maybe she has political cancer?

QuoteANCHORAGE, Alaska – Sarah Palin says she's not a quitter, she's a fighter, but adds that, politically speaking, "if I die, I die. So be it."

The Alaska governor spoke in taped interviews on ABC, NBC and CNN broadcast Tuesday morning.

She told CNN that "all options are on the table" for her future.

But told ABC's "Good Morning America" that she recognizes she might not have political staying power after her surprise resignation Friday, which came just as she had been expected to elevate her national profile ahead of a possible 2012 GOP presidential run.

"I said before ... 'You know, politically speaking, if I die, I die. So be it,'" she said.

I think it's extremely intellectually dishonest to accuse the media of being hard on her family or private life. Her family is a train wreck, but most journalists wouldn't dig too deep in that if she didn't choose herself to parade them in front of cameras for political gain. She was selling her retarded whore of a daughter as an "abstinence advocate" for fucks sake.

The media would have gone after her family anyway, but yeah you're right in that she was asking for it in trying to use them publicly to help define her.

Yeah well if you are going to do the whole social conservative thing you need them for your political credentials.  Pity they weren't a very good political family.

These days, it seems like a safe assumption that if you try to use "family values" as part of your platform, your own family life is ironically going to be a trainwreck.  :)

I'd agree but it seems that all the candidates had their families out there during the campaign. Just what they do - show the family, no biggie. I'd be just as annoyed if the the kids of Biden, McCain, Obama were trashed. I guess it could be argued that Palin did more with family in the campaign, but then, she was also just coming on the national scene so her family, life and habits in Alaska, were in the media a lot more.

To be fair most families have trainwrecks.  I think my family is as stable as they come but heaven help us if we suddenly came under media scrutiny.

I don't disagree.  I just think if you're going to make family values a part of your platform, your family better be the fucking Cleavers.  Otherwise, be a Dem or left-leaning Republican.

What is such a trainwreck about her family life?

And hwo did she use it politically, at least insofar as they then "deserved it", whatever "it" is?

She has a family, they stand around when she is speaking sometimes...kind of like every single politicians family. Like, say for example, President Obama.

And what is this about "selling" her "whore" of a daughter? I don't recall her daughter being a prostitute, although I guess that would suggest something of a train wreck. I certainly do not recall her daughter claiming to be an "abstinence advocate", perhaps I missed that along with her turning tricks?

The irony of Marty slandering someone else on sexual grounds (much less sexual promiscuity grounds) would be funny if it wasn't so trite and common.

Every single politician in America makes "family values" part of their platform. I cannot think of a single one that claims that family values are not important.

I am still confused as to why Palins family is so much more a train wreck than anyone elses. Is this all about her daughter have a child out of marriage? Isn't that bitch a bit outdated these days?

But he didn't do that - he called her a "retarded whore". Her being a whore is not dependent on Marty fucking anything and everything that gets close to him, or her opinion (which as far as I know she has never once expressed) about his homosexuality.

He didn't blast her for being a hypocrite, he blasted her for being a "retarded whore" and he blasted Palin for "selling her".

I disagree. It's not like Cheney's lesbian daughter would have scored him a lot of points with the conservative right, either. But then he didn't choose to parade her around and the media didn't go into feeding frenzy on her either.

I think it's less the child out of wedlock thing than the "you can't see your child" thing re: Bristol and the baby daddy, whose name I can't even remember.  I don't really care about Palin's family all that much, I merely like to point out the irony in it all.

So as long as Palin thinks abstinence is a good idea, then the fact that her daughter has a kid is somehow "egg on face"? I am not sure I understand how that context works.

Maybe her daughter wanted to have a child? I don't know - I just don't see how it follows that her daugher having a kid is somehow a good reason to accuse Palin of 'selling her retarded whore of a daughter".

The difference is that their families haven't been that interesting.  I mean given that joke McCain made in the 90s about Chelsea Clinton being so ugly because her dad's Janet Reno I don't think that campaign could cordon off their families.  But I'm sure we'd hear a lot if, say, Chelsea Clinton got pregnant when she was 18, or what have you.

Speaking of her I recently met her landlords from Oxford.  The security stuff they were saying about was ridiculous.  Some of it had to be removed recently because, for example, the high speed gates that clamp shut when a panic button's pressed put someone into hospital for a few days when there was a party at the house and someone drunkenly pressed the panic button

QuoteAnd hwo did she use it politically, at least insofar as they then "deserved it", whatever "it" is?
Well I think she's discussed Trig, for example, a lot more than is normal.  Sometimes I think it is just crass and political (Runner's World) but her pro-life speech in Indiana when she discussed the thought she had of having an abortion I think is terrific and gives a hint of the politician she could have been with a bit more time, and possibly that she could still be in the future.  It's a really remarkable, very moving and honest speech.  By far and away the best she's given that I've heard of.

I think using a family politically is a bit like porn.  It's difficult to describe but you know it when you see it.  There've been a couple of times when I thought that of Palin.

No I am not defending Marty's histrionics as my own ideas.  I simply pointed out how her family was a source of political embarrasment not that she is a pimp or anything.

Palin's deficiencies, in my eyes, had little to do with her personal life.

I don't think there is a choice here - if you are a politician, your family is going to be on camera whether you like it or not. If you are ancient, and don't have young children, your fam will get something of a break, I guess.

I think it is more a matter of whether you wish to use them to slander someone or not. If you do, then of course it is compleetely ridiculous to whore them out for the press, and if not, they are just a fine example of an upstanding and pleasing icon of the American Nuclear Family.

Palin's family is nothing special. Seem like a pretty well put together family, and the fact that she has a kid with autism or downs or whatever is certainly a bit more interesting than the fact that she has a daughter who had a child.

Marty suddenly becoming the Moral Majority when it suits him is pretty good though. Now THAT is some hypocrisy!

This is one of the biggest differences between UK and US politics.  I can think of maybe 5 photos of Blair or Brown with their children in the press and only 1-2 for Cameron.  Here the rule is if you keep you family private then the press'll generally respect that (unless they get caught drunk and disorderly like Euan Blair) and if you take them public you'll get slammed for using them.

Then, in this country, when a politician brings out the children it's almost certain he's asking the press to 'respect his privacy' after he's been caught having an affair.

Well, she is a retarded whore for not knowing how to use contraceptives.

Contraceptives (well condoms and such) don't work 100% of the time.  Of course birth control pills are a different matter so if she was going to be having sex...but I digress.

But I think just the very idea of breeding is so horrid to you, you are just flailing out in blind rage now.

I certainly do not recall her daughter claiming to be an "abstinence advocate"

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/06/bristol-palin-says-abstin_n_197597.html

I could easily come up with more links for this.

All of those links are from after the campaign, and there have been some stories that Bristol Palin went behind her mother's back to set up at least the first interviews.

I don't think Palin had much choice during the campaign: every politician has to roll his or her family out, and in Palin's case she would either have to try to hide Bristol or allow her and her boyfriend to be front and center. The former would have made her seem like an embarrassed parent with 1950s values.

It's funny, I am trying to find the evidence of Bristol Palins idiocy in regards to contraception.

From the links Marty provided but clearly did not read, her position is that abstinence is the only certain method of birth control, as her own example makes clear, since she did in fact use condoms "most of the time" and she also stated that it is "not at all realistic" to expect that teens won't have sex. Most of her activism has been centered, as far as I can tell, around pregnancy awareness.

I am guessing that the people who are going after this young woman on anonymous message boards don't have a fraction of her courage. Anyone think Marty or Fate would have the balls to call her a "retarded whore" to her face?

Palin's daughter having a kid is a political embarrassment but I really don't buy that it's all that big a deal, except to those who make politics the rule and see things through that prism. Palin believes in abstinence (maybe other birth control methods, don't know). Not every method works 100%. But we get the haters, those who have a thing for birth control, abortion, as strong issues but who just have to trash someone if they use abstinence. Do we trash people using contraceptives but who get pregnant anyway? It's partly ideology and is just way over the top. In fact, I give the Palin family more credit for dealing with what happened pretty well. The daughter has been on some tv spots or what ever talking about how it's a bad idea to get pregnant out of wedlock, or at such a young age. Talking to other young girls about the problems and pitfalls of it. But the pundits and angry folks ignore that good message and just focus on the trashing. I just don't care that much about it, but it's become so political it's just nuts. TV talk shows had the father of the kid on tv spots talking about what ever, made a circus of that.

I don't find Palin a political figure I can support, but she continues to get more sympathy from me due to the vultures trashing every little thing. Just too much. PDS - Palin Derangement Syndrome.

Clinton won by more electoral votes than Obama in 1992 (200+), but only beat Bush, Sr. in the popular vote by less than 3 percentage points. EVs do not reflect popularity. Reagan swooped into the White House with an almost 10-point popular margin.
Obama won a greater percentage of the popular vote than Reagan did.  So what?

Not sure what you are trying to prove here.  Palin was a net negative to the McCain ticket, and I don't think anyone can seriously question that.  McCain gambled on her, and looked good for a few days, and then crashed.

You can argue that each and every time she screwed the pooch, it was because of something like "it is hard to say what magazines one reads," but the only good thing about Palin for her supporters is that they never have to explain why she did something right!

Dont think you will find any either.

My recollection is that shortly after Palin was selected as the running mate stories began circulating in the media about her daughter's pregnancy which in turn raised questions about Palin's stance on abortion.  The way she dealt with that issue made her very popular with the Religious Right - something McCain needed.

Now Marty wants us to think Palin's daughter is a retarded whore.   It is the Martys of the world that ironically ensure Palin's popularity and her place in the spot light as the paragon of the Religious Right fighting against these personal attacks.

Levi is going to need to be... silenced soon.  :menace:

QuoteLevi Johnston: Lot of divorce talk in Palin home
He says she neglected parenting and governorship duties in favor of money
updated 2:10 p.m. ET, Wed., Sept . 2, 2009

He almost became a member of the Palin family, but Levi Johnston — who fathered former Gov. Sarah Palin's grandchild with her daughter Bristol — isn't holding back when it comes to spilling the Alaska clan's secrets.

"There was a lot of talk of divorce in that house ... times when Sarah and Todd would mention it and sound pretty serious," says Johnston, who turns 19 this year. (Last month, the couple denied Internet rumors of a pending divorce.)

But that wasn't all. In a wide-ranging interview with Vanity Fair in its October issue, out nationally Sept. 8, the teen says that the onetime vice-presidential nominee's frequent self-description as a "hockey mom" who put family above career was far from the truth.

"Even before she was nominated, there wasn't much parenting in that house," he says. "Sarah doesn't cook, Todd doesn't cook — the kids would do it all themselves: cook, clean, do the laundry, and get ready for school. Most of the time Bristol would help her youngest sister with her homework, and I'd barbecue chicken or steak on the grill."

But it was the people of Alaska who might've suffered worse, according to Johnston. Palin often complained that her job as governor was "too hard," and after spending a couple weeks of being gloomy about losing the vice presidency, she focused on making money instead of the needs of Alaskans, he said.

Talk of quitting
"Sarah was sad for a while. She walked around the house pouting," Johnston says. "A week or two after she got back she started talking about how nice it would be to quit and write a book or do a show and make 'triple the money.' She would blatantly say, 'I want to just take this money and quit being governor.' "

Palin resigned from her post as governor of Alaska in July.

Her bid for the White House definitely got to the head of the woman from Wasilla, Johnston adds, saying she'd say things like: "I brought everything to the table" and "The majority of people were out there voting because of me!" when supporters of U.S. Sen. John McCain started to blame her for the loss. "She definitely thought she was running for president," Johnston says.

Palin's ambition for higher office also affected the family's plans for Bristol and Johnston's baby, he says. The governor planned for the baby to be adopted by herself and her husband, Todd, with his real parentage to be kept a secret.

"That way, she said, Bristol and I didn't have to worry about anything," Johnston says. "Sarah kept mentioning this plan. She was nagging – she wouldn't give up. She would say, 'So, are you gonna let me adopt him?' I think Sarah wanted to make Bristol look good, and she didn't want people to know that her 17-year-old daughter was going to have a kid."
