Title: Campaign for the liberation and restoration of Martinus
Post by: Jaron on May 10, 2016, 04:26:35 AM
People of Languish,

I humbly and publicly petition for the unbanning of Martinus. He is a part of the central fabric of the forum and without his wit, his charm and his intellect the Languish experience is sorely lacking.

Of course, I fully support the mods decision to give him a ban to cool his jets, but the jets are cool and he's ready to rejoin his internet family.

Please release our friend from bondage. #FeelthePole

If Marty personally posts a convincing and heartfelt apology on Languish, I'll consider rescinding the ban if Seedy is unavailable.

But he can't do that while he is banned.  :hmm: Unless...Jaron, if you were to send Martinus your password, he could use your account to post the apology, leading to the resurrection of his own account.

It would be a touching moment of graciousness in languish history, like in the Grapes of Wrath, when Rose of Sharon feeds the starving man from her breast. :)

Could we all just pick up the slack instead?  If every other poster made just one post per day about how Muslim immigrants were subhuman scum and anyone who disagrees is part of the "Regressive left" we'd almost fill the void created by his departure.

I passed along your terms to Martinus, Jacob.

His response is this:

1) he hopes you die of cancer.
2) If you don't have cancer, he hopes you get it.

Considering the standards of Languish, it's really an exploit to be banned from here.  To have it happen to you, on average, once a year, is an achievement worthy of mention.

Not really. If a moderator doesn't like you, they might ban you for little or no reason. I used to get banned almost weekly, for posting rather mundane stuff that no one else would get banned for. It was really irritating, and I'd strongly arguing against applying such a treatment to any other poster.

I think you did briefly have an American account to play with Languish people and decided we didn't RP enough.

I had nothing to do with it.  Once again, my mod decisions are questioned, countered and reversed.  Enjoy your hot cup o' kind and sensitive person, ladies.

His unbanning was a quirk of the new software upgrade, and unintended. It was merely implementing the original ban as it was meant to be.

Sorry, but this is total bullshit. I can understand a temp ban for mouthing off to a mod. That's well deserved.

But this feels arbitrary and petty. It seems like this is more about satisfying personal vendettas and political differences than moderating the forum. Please reinstate him, or give him some kind of firm and reasonable boundary for his ban. Banning him because we don't like him is silly. There are plenty of posters here who are just as bad in other ways. This is Martinus bashing at its worst.

If that's true, then he shouldn't have been banned.  As CdM was told once, his own posts as a poster are fair game, just like everyone else's.

However, I'm going to choose to believe that it was just a software glitch that he was ever let out of the back alley in the first place.

But if I really did drive away some people, and can be persuaded with evidence that was indeed the case, I would be happy to put it in my sig.

It's important to go through proper channels. If people have a problem with Mart's posting they have to take it up with Milo.

Your attempt to drive me off backfired.  Grumbler continues to try to this day, never learning the lesson of his younger brother Sisyphus.

It's not.  He encourages others to ignore me as well.  Presumably he wants everyone to ignore me so I'll go away. Previously he has stated that he does so because he thinks it will change my behavior, but I don't think that's in the cards anymore.  Originally he'd only ignore me some of the time, but decided to so all the time after I kept playing "Gotcha" with him.  That is to say, I would find previous statements that put his current statements in a poor light.

I must be doing it for some nefarious reason, like trying to "drive him off," because the alternative is that I refuse to engage in debates with someone I consider (as do many others) a basically dishonest and contrarian debater.  His ego won't allow him to consider the truth, so he invents fictions about how I am oppressing him somehow by refusing to respond to him.  It's most amusing.

Grumbler, you know me well, you know that I always tell you things truthfully, even if they are blunt at times.

So here is one more blunt truth from me:  you're not fooling anyone with your non-response responses to Raz.  If you're going for "he's too beneath me to bother with" strategy, you have to actually not bother with him for that strategy to work.  If you respond to him by proxy, then believe me, the one who looks dignified in such non-exchanges is Raz, and definitely not you.

Not really.  Both honest and dishonest people do that.

The one thing I have noticed often is that the people who say they don't give a fuck what other people think tend to do that out of necessity.  They would rather do give a fuck, but unfortunately there is nothing complimentary to give a fuck about.

The reason he can't show any evidence that I am trying to "drive him off the board" is because there isn't any such evidence.  There's no evidence because I don't have any problem with him posting on the board.  In fact, I find his posts rather amusing... like the post in this thread where he claimed, out of the blue, that I was trying to drive him off the board.   That's just so bizarre that I have to laugh.  Sometimes, he's even funny when he tries to be funny.  So, overall, he is more amusing than most (though he can't tough The Brain for amusing posts).  I have no incentive to "drive him off the board."  I also have no incentive to encourage him to change his debating behavior.

You'll note, though, that he threw in a bunch of random quotes without any indication of who posted that, when they posted it, or what the context was.  That kind of intellectually dishonest stuff is why I won't respond to him.  He's not interested in debate, just "winning."  I don't mind that he does that, but I won't go down that rathole.

This doesn't require a much of a plot. It's difficult to reconcile "everyone ignore Raz" with anything other then an attempt to ostracize me.

But does he want them to ignore you "right now" or "in perpetuity"? The second choice he can't manage himself.

in my experience, most people really don't have littlefinger-esque plots going on with the sole purpose of screwing someone over. people, generally, are too busy living their life doing other things. so, it's best to quash thoughts that people are out for you for any nefarious purpose, like driving you off an internet board, etc., unless you have evidence beyond reasonable doubt. otherwise, such thoughts can really lead you astray

This doesn't require a much of a plot. It's difficult to reconcile "everyone ignore Raz" with anything other then an attempt to ostracize me.

I think that is the crux of your problem, actually.

It isn't difficult at all, if you just listen to what people say. They ignore you because engaging with you is a waste of time and effort better spent on others. There is nothing more to it than that.

I ignore you because I know that every time I engage I become quickly cognizant of what a mistake it was, and that I would be better off spending my time discussing substantive matters with those who I can actually get something back from - each time I violate this general rule (and I have no doubt that THIS example will prove out as well) I end up regretting it. So whether you stay on the board or go doesn't matter at all as to how I approach interaction with you, and a desire for an outcome like you being "driven off" doesn't enter into it at all.

So there you go, your difficult problem of reconciliation has been solved for you. You're welcome.

Grumbles, you would do well to learn from Yi.  He really does ignore my posts.  :P

Yi doesn't ignore your posts, he just doesn't always reply in the way you hope.

Nope, he has already stated he is ignoring me.  I think it dates back a long time ago to when I told him not to get his tiny testicles in a knot.  That guy can really carry a grudge.

Glad you didnt give in to the extreme passive aggressive behavior of Yi.   :)

You cant help yourself can you?

You are right.  Only a total flaming asshole uses language like that without apologizing.  I withdraw it and apologize to Yi.

Do y'all remember when grumbler and..I think Paul Atreides argued for a couple of pages on whether a bass was a perch or a trout (or something like that) ?

I think i was arguing that the Ronco Super Bass-O-Matic '76 would work with trout, and Paul A was arguing that it was for bass only.  Then we got to arguing over what, exactly, was a bass.  Then he left and never came back. :(

That one was actually about  the Spanish Armada.  Other than the sidetrack about whether the English term for the light Spanish vessels was patache as claimed by the Wikipedia article, I found it quite interesting.

He can't can't ignore me right now either.  If everyone ignored you, would you stick around?  I doubt anyone would do so.

If people ignored me all the time, no. I already have specific posts which don't receive any type of feedback, so perhaps everyone ignored them.

Do you actually want me to respond to this?  Cause I will.  There is only one person who really ignores me, and that's Grumbler.  He hasn't directly responded to me in about four years.  You ignore me some of the time and Marty says he'll ignore me but never can do so for more than a week.  Now of you three, only Marty has said directly he wanted me gone, he told me to kill myself.  I never stated that you wanted me gone (so what you want really doesn't factor into this), I said Grumbler did.  Grumbler doesn't just ignore me, but he wants everyone else to ignore me.  If he got his way, nobody would talk to me and I would be cut off from every member of Languish.  It is implicitly trying to get me to leave since I am left only two options: talk to myself or leave the forum.  This is very common behavior among school-children. "ignore him and he'll go away".

Fortunately Grumbler is not nearly as highly regarded he thinks he is.  His recommendation that everyone ignore me, has fallen on deaf ears, and him ignoring me makes him look childish.  I'm not sure he realizes this.  He doesn't have much in the way of self-awareness.

I've found a great many people in life will go away if you stop talking to them.

Ignoring you doesn't make him look childish.  Claiming to ignore you but actually responding to you by proxy is what's getting it done.

Yeah, the problem with ignoring people to get them to go away is that it works on most people, but usually not on the ones you'd most like to go away.  Possibly because everyone else is ignoring them, too, so they have no one else but your left to turn to.
