I wouldn't mind making what those guys make. But I'm too old to start out at the bottom and hope I get a shot. Plus I kind of like seeing my kids more than 4 months out of the year.
So the NFL is going full tilt on using Surface tablets on the sidelines for still photos. Every team is getting them, whether they want them or not. But I predict many coaches won't use them (or will beat the hell out of them), and will request physical prints instead. We're going to continue with physical prints as a backup or if the coaches want them, probably for two years at the very least.
And I may transition from Bengals video to an NFL "purple hat" to do on-field tech support on game days.
Also, the Browns turned down Hard Knocks. Probably a wise decision, but disappointing. Would be nice to see that circus up close.

Chuck Noll has died.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/hall-fame-coach-chuck-noll-040720511--nfl.html
QuotePITTSBURGH (AP) -- Chuck Noll, the Hall of Fame coach who won a record four Super Bowl titles with the Pittsburgh Steelers, died Friday night at his home. He was 82.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner said Noll died of natural causes.
Noll transformed the Steelers from a long-standing joke into one of the NFL's pre-eminent powers, becoming the only coach to win four Super Bowls. He was a demanding figure who did not make close friends with his players, yet was a successful and motivating leader.
The Steelers won the four Super Bowls over six seasons (1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979), an unprecedented run that made Pittsburgh one of the NFL's marquee franchises, one that breathed life into a struggling, blue-collar city.
''He was one of the great coaches of the game,'' Steelers owner Dan Rooney once said. ''He ranks up there with (George) Halas, (Tom) Landry and (Curly) Lambeau.''
Noll's 16-8 record in postseason play remains one of the best in league history. He retired in 1991 with a 209-156-1 record in 23 seasons, after inheriting a team that had never won a postseason game. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
''Chuck Noll is the best thing that happened to the Rooneys since they got on the boat (to America) in Ireland,'' Art Rooney II, the former Steelers personnel chief and the son of the team founder, once said.
A former messenger guard for his hometown Cleveland Browns who earned the nicknamed Knute Knowledge - as in Knute Rockne - Noll was an assistant with the San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Colts for nine seasons. Then he accepted what seemed a dead-end job in January 1969 as coach of the NFL's least-successful organization.
Art Rooney Sr. often hired friends and cronies as coaches, and only two of the Steelers' first 13 coaches had winning records. At the time Noll took over, the franchise was 105 games below .500 in its history.
Noll, hired only after Penn State's Joe Paterno turned down a $350,000, five-year offer, was different from any Steelers coach before him. He immediately brought intelligence, toughness, stability, confidence, character and a can-do mindset to a franchise accustomed to constant upheaval and ever-changing personnel.
Perhaps not the most colorful coach behind the microphone, Noll could often be counted on for memorable, motivational one-liners that became rallying cries.
Phrases like ''A life of frustration is inevitable for any coach whose main enjoyment is winning,'' and ''Before you can win a game, you have to not lose it,'' and ''The thrill isn't in the winning, it's in the doing,'' spoke volumes about what Noll was trying to accomplish. They went over well in a football-crazed region of Pennsylvania.
The day after Noll was hired, the Steelers drafted defensive lineman Joe Greene. He was the first of the nine Hall of Famers selected during the Noll era. Four of the others were drafted within Noll's first four seasons: Terry Bradshaw, Mel Blount, Jack Ham and Franco Harris.
Four more arrived in the first five rounds of the 1974 draft: Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth and Mike Webster. And the 1971 draft, though it produced only one Hall of Famer (Ham), generated seven starters.
While the Steelers surprisingly won their opener under Noll in 1969, beating Detroit, they lost their final 13 games that season, and their first three in 1970. By then, some were questioning Noll's hiring.
The Steelers' turnaround began in earnest in 1970, the year they moved into the AFC after the NFL and AFL merged. They drafted Bradshaw with the No. 1 pick, moved into Three Rivers Stadium after years of being a secondhand tenant of Pitt Stadium and Forbes Field. They won five of eight during one stretch.
By 1972, the year Harris arrived to give them the ground game Noll sought, they were championship contenders with an 11-3 record and a we've-turned-the-corner attitude. Noll had long since run off underachievers and pushed the Rooneys to bring in the players he wanted.
''He'll argue a point with you and keep yelling, 'No, this is right, you're wrong,''' Dan Rooney said. ''Sometimes you have to say, 'This is the way we're going to do it.'''
The first traditional playoff game in Steelers history on Dec. 23, 1972, also signaled what was to come. The Steelers were in control of the John Madden-coached Raiders most of the game, until quarterback Ken Stabler scored in the final two minutes to put Oakland up 7-6.
With the Steelers down to fourth-and-10 on their side of the field, Bradshaw lofted a pass downfield intended for Frenchy Fuqua. As Fuqua and safety Jack Tatum converged on the ball, it bounded high in the air for what looked to be a certain incompletion. Instead, Harris, trailing on the play, caught the ball nearly at his shoe tops and raced into the end zone for an improbable touchdown.
Noll's Steelers did not win the Super Bowl that season - they lost to unbeaten Miami on a fake punt in the AFC title game.
But, with their roster completed by their remarkable 1974 draft, they finally became NFL champions and did it three more times by January 1980.
Still, Noll's best team might have been in 1976, when the Steelers rebounded from a 1-4 start to go 10-4 - even with Bradshaw injured and out most of the season - by playing the greatest stretch of defense in NFL history.
The Steel Curtain shut out five of their final nine opponents while yielding only 28 points. At one point, they didn't allow a touchdown for 22 quarters.
A year later, Noll wound up in a federal court trial. He accused Raiders defensive back George Atkinson, who had leveled Swann with a brutal hit the season before, of being part of the NFL's ''criminal element.''
Noll prevailed, but there were hard feelings when, under oath, he included Blount as also being part of that criminal element. The Steelers went 9-5 that season, but rebounded to win the championship in the 1978 and 1979 seasons.
When all the talent began to retire, the championships ended. Great drafts gave way to poor ones. The Steelers won only two playoff games and no conference championships in Noll's final 12 seasons, missing the postseason eight times.
Noll never was much of a yeller or screamer, though he had his moments. He confronted Oilers coach Jerry Glanville at midfield and warned him about the team's borderline-legal blocking techniques.
''He didn't feel like it was his job to motivate,'' Bleier said. ''It was his job to take motivated people and give them a direction and get the job done.''
When he retired, Noll always said he would never coach another team and he didn't.
In 2007, the football field at St. Vincent College, the Steelers' longtime training camp home in Latrobe, was named for Noll, even though he played at and graduated from Dayton.
Born in Cleveland, Noll attended Benedictine High School, where he played running back and tackle, winning All-State honors, before gaining a scholarship to play for the Flyers. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh's biggest, most traditional rival, in 1953.
At 27, he retired as a player from the Browns in 1959.

QuoteThe offseason only grows colder for Josh Gordon.
NFL Media's Albert Breer confirmed that the Cleveland Browns wide receiver was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of DWI in Raleigh, North Carolina, per the Raleigh Police Department.
Gordon was driving while impaired and clocked going 50 mph in a 35 mph zone, police spokesman Jim Sughrue told NFL Media. He was arrested shortly before 3 a.m. ET and released on bond at approximately 6 a.m. Saturday.
"We are aware of the matter and are disappointed to learn of this situation," Browns general manager Ray Farmer said in a statement. "We will comment further at the appropriate time."
Asked to comment, Gordon's agent Drew Rosenhaus told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport: "Not at this time."
The Pro Bowler already was awaiting word on his potentially lengthy suspension for a positive drug test.
Rapoport reported Thursday that Gordon's suspension-appeal hearing will be held at the end of July. That appeal could be nixed if the NFL and NFL Players Association strike a deal on a reduced suspension for Gordon, but another arrest certainly clouds the future for last season's league-leading receiver.
It was just over a month ago that Gordon pleaded not guilty to a speeding ticket after he was stopped going 74 mph in a 60 mph zone. His passenger was cited for possession of marijuana.
Gordon, 23, was suspended two games and fined four game checks by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy last year. He also failed at least one marijuana test at Baylor, leading to an indefinite ban.
Gordon has emerged as one of the game's most dangerous pass-catchers and brightest young stars on the field, but it's fair to wonder when he'll play his next snap.

QuoteEXCLUSIVE: Feds quietly investigating prescription drug abuse in NFL locker rooms, sources say
The Drug Enforcement Administration's probe began after attorneys representing about 1,300 NFL retirees filed a lawsuit accusing the league of illegally handing out painkillers, sleeping pills and other drugs without informing players of the risks of health problems and addiction.
The NFL, still reeling from allegations that it covered up the long-term dangers of concussions, is now facing a possible blitz from federal drug agents looking into the abuse of painkillers and other drugs.
The Drug Enforcement Administration has quietly launched an investigation into the abuse of prescription medication in NFL locker rooms, three sources familiar with the probe told the Daily News.
Agents from the DEA's New York division are reaching out to former players to learn how NFL doctors and trainers get access to potent narcotics such as Percodan and Vicodin or anti-inflammatories such as Toradol, a nonaddictive prescription drug widely used around the league to treat pain.
"They want to find out who provided and distributed the drugs to football players," one source said.
The DEA's investigation began shortly after attorneys representing about 1,300 NFL retirees filed a class-action lawsuit in San Francisco federal court on May 20 that accuses the league of illegally providing prescription drugs to keep players on the field without informing them of the long-term risks. The nine named plaintiffs include Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon and his former teammate, Hall of Fame defensive end Richard Dent, as well as Pro Bowl defensive end Marcellus Wiley, now an ESPN analyst.
"The allegations in our lawsuit, that the NFL has violated state and federal drug laws, have been confirmed by over 1,300 former NFL players," Steve Silverman, an attorney for the former players, told The News on Friday. "We are pleased to learn that the DEA and United States Department of Justice are also taking our clients' allegations seriously and are actively protecting the welfare of NFL players."
The suit filed by Silverman and his colleagues is a catalogue of horrors. Court papers show team doctors and trainers widely distributed painkillers, sleeping pills and other drugs without warning players about the risk of addiction or the dangers of mixing powerful medications. McMahon, according to the lawsuit, became hooked on pain pills, at one point gulping down more than 100 Percocets each month, even in the offseason.
The drugs numbed pain, allowing hurt players to return to the field, but they also led to aggravated injuries and created long-term health problems, the lawsuit claims.
Keith Van Horne, another McMahon teammate on the Bears' 1985 Super Bowl championship team, played an entire season with a broken leg, thanks to what the lawsuit calls "a constant diet of pills to deal with the pain."
Dent suffers from permanent nerve damage because he played eight games of a season with a broken foot, thanks to painkillers, rather than undergoing surgery.
The lawsuit said ex-49ers center Jeremy Newberry suffers from serious kidney failure, high blood pressure and violent headaches as the result of the drugs he received while playing in the NFL.
"One former trainer has described the 1980s and 1990s as 'wild west' in terms of the NFL monitoring the medications provided to its players," the suit said. The allegations in the lawsuit echo earlier reports about prescription drug abuse by The News and other media outlets.
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers lineman Randy Grimes, for example, told The News in a 2009 story chronicling his successful effort to overcome his painkiller addiction that doctors passed out medication freely, and that players routinely broke into the team drug cabinet to help themselves.
"We'd take handfuls of stuff out of there," Grimes said. "There was no accountability."
Ex-Jets quarterback Ray Lucas, meanwhile, told The News in 2010 that he turned to street drugs after the NFL to deal with pain from football-related injuries in his neck and back. He said he developed an extraordinarily high tolerance for pain medication due to the amount of drugs he used during his NFL career.
The DEA investigation is good news for the players involved in the suit because the feds may uncover evidence unavailable to lawyers pursuing a civil suit, says Robert Boland, a former prosecutor, criminal defense attorney and sports agent. He's now the academic chairman of New York University's Tisch Center for Sports Management.
The NFL declined to comment on the DEA investigation. A spokesman for the Players Association did not respond to an email about the federal inquiry.
A DEA spokeswoman, Erin Mulvey, said she was not aware of an investigation into prescription drug abuse in NFL locker rooms. Speaking generally, she said the DEA is involved in efforts to reduce painkiller abuse because officials believe it has contributed to an increase in heroin use, she said.
Allegations of rampant locker-room prescription drug abuse are part of a broader battle over players' long-term health. A federal judge in Philadelphia gave preliminary approval last week to a settlement that would remove a cap on compensation for players who suffered concussions and other traumatic brain injuries.
Also, NFL retirees have long complained that the disability program the league operates jointly with the Players Association seems designed to reject claims by players physically debilitated by football-related injuries. The NFL, many former players argue, has turned its back on the men who helped turn it into a $9 billion-a-year industry.
"Drug addiction is part of a list of issues players struggle with as they make the transition to retirement," Boland said.
Boland said that while there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that suggests team officials and medical staff encouraged players to abuse prescription drugs, it will be difficult to prove that league officials played a role.
"I don't think the NFL loves the fact that there is a drug investigation," Boland said. "But in the end, the NFL may be able to successfully say this is a club matter."
Well, I'm officially an NFL employee as of next Monday. That was a lot of paperwork for a seasonal job.

QuoteUrination on Art Modell's grave 'disappointing and disrespectful,' cemetery says
By Jon Meoli The Baltimore Sun
12:19 p.m. EDT, July 24, 2014
Baltimore County police are investigating an incident in which a man in a Cleveland Browns jersey videotaped himself urinating on former Ravens owner Art Modell's grave, a spokeswoman said.
"There is a statute on the books that regulates disorderly or indecent conduct in a cemetery," county police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said in an email Wednesday. "They have to look at the video to see if the behavior depicted fits the statute. ... Also, Pikesville officers are reaching out to the cemetery to see if they wish to pursue the matter, if indeed a crime did occur."
Also, Pikesville officers are reaching out to the cemetery to see if they wish to pursue the matter, if indeed a crime did occur.
Armacost said the incident would be a misdemeanor crime if pursued. David Modell, Art Modell's son, said the family will file charges if the person is found.
"To some people, the man in that grave is Art Modell," David Modell said, adding that his late mother, Patricia, was also laid to rest at that location. "But to me, my brother, my children, and my wife, that's their father. That's their grandfather. ... Can any of your readers imagine, for one second, seeing someone do that to your parents' grave?
"The act is so offensive, and I'd like to publicly say, isn't enough enough? When is enough enough? It's a vile, piggish act of online cowardice by Mr. BrownsFan4Life [referring to the uploader]."
Modell went on to say the act was "incredibly distasteful, revolting, and mean-spirited."
"We will file charges," Modell said. "Absolutely will file charges. Whatever we can throw at him, that's what's going to happen."
A Druid Ridge Cemetery spokeswoman on Wednesday called the fan's action "disappointing and disrespectful."
Kim Tarleton, the spokeswoman, said visitors are asked to notify staff of any inappropriate behavior on the cemetery grounds, at which point appropriate action would be taken.
"We take the safety and security of our park very seriously," she said. "However, cemeteries, by their nature, are open to the public, so it would be unrealistic to restrict all access to the property."
The fan posted a video of the incident on YouTube last week under the username "BrownsFan4Life." In the video, he tears off an Ed Reed Ravens jersey to reveal a Browns jersey and then apparently urinates out the bottom of his pants leg using a catheter and a tube.
"I'm [urinating] on Art's grave," the man says in the video, before going into a diatribe ending with Modell's own words about how he "had no choice" but to move the Browns to Baltimore.

QuoteReport: NFL Drug Testing Is Screwed Up And Screwed Josh Gordon
Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk has some very interesting details about Josh Gordon's failed marijuana test that has him facing a full-season suspension. And if it's true, the NFL's drug testing procedure is more messed up than we could have imagined—and Josh Gordon doesn't deserve a suspension.
Gordon's appeal of his 16-game suspension, which is scheduled to be heard on Friday, will reportedly hinge on inconsistencies in measurement of his urine sample, which was split into two containers. Florio:
QuoteUrine samples routinely are split into two bottles, the "A" bottle and the "B" bottle. If the "A" bottle generates a positive result, the "B" bottle is tested. Amazingly, the "B" bottle doesn't have to independently show a violation. Instead, the substance abuse policy states that the "'B' bottle Test need only show that the substance, revealed in the 'A' bottle Test, is evident to the 'limits of detection' to confirm the results of the 'A' bottle Test."
[...]
For Gordon, the "A" bottle showed a concentration of 16 ng/ml, only one nanogram per milliliter above the limits of 15. The "B" bottle showed a concentration of 13.6 ng/ml — less than the threshold.
To emphasize, Gordon's "A" and "B" bottles came from the same urine sample. The "B" was only tested to confirm that the "A" wasn't tainted or wildly out of bounds—it doesn't matter that the "B" wouldn't have been a violation had it arbitrarily been labeled the "A" bottle, or that there was a sizable discrepancy between the two tested bottles. It's tough shit for Josh Gordon, despite the fact that his urine averaged out to be below allowable limits.
But, this is how the NFL's Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse (the renegotiation of which has more or less been going on for three years) dictates testing should go. It's the same document that mandated Gordon, a repeat offender, be tested every few days.
QuotePer a source with knowledge of the situation, Gordon landed in Stage III of the program last year as part of a negotiated two-game suspension for the use of cough syrup that contained codeine. Once in Stage III, a player never leaves. And he must pass up to 10 drug tests per month.
According to the source, Gordon has passed at least 70 drug tests.
The NFL's marijuana policy is a retrograde embarrassment. It's not technically on appeal here, in what sounds like a pretty strong case for Josh Gordon, but maybe it should be.
Update: Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Gordon's appeal will also maintain that his drug test was so marginally positive that it could have been the result of second-hand smoke.
Update No. 2: Bomani Jones has a different way to look at how screwed up the NFL's policy on marijuana is:
Quotehere's what's lost in this josh gordon story: the nfl threshold for marijuana is 15 ng/nl. the wada (World Anti-Doping Agency) standard? 150. ONE HUNDRED FIFTY.
This Microsoft Surface rollout is gonna be... Interesting.
QuoteGordon's appeal will also maintain that his drug test was so marginally positive that it could have been the result of second-hand smoke.
Meh, we didn't buy that one, either. You've got to inhale a shit ton to get it into your bloodstream in order to test positive above the margins from "second-hand smoke".

NFL's limits are 10 times lower than those of the World Anti-Doping Agency's. I would assume that means the NFL limits are unusually low.

Stephen A Smith suspended from ESPN for a week for saying stupid shit about the Ray Rice situation. Seems kind of unfair to hire guys to say stupid shit and "embrace the debate" and then suspend one of your top bullshit purveyors for not immediately realizing this is the one topic you shouldn't stay stupid shit about.
I agree for the most part, hiring idiots then getting upset when they act like idiots seems distasteful. A week suspension is nothing though, and ESPN knows how fast the news cycle goes and by the time Smith gets back no one will even remember why he was gone.
According to: http://www.canorml.org/healthfacts/drugtestguide/drugtestdetection.html#time
50 ng/ml is "the standard in most government-required testing programs."
More than 3 times the NFL's limit.

Out of curiosity, do you know what those test limits were?

Hell, I don't know what the exact numbers were, since it was all outsourced to labs, but there was a difference between the urine test and the blood test; if you failed the urine test, you could immediate appeal with a blood test for a more definitive result, but I believe the threshold for the blood test was lower. Now driving under the influence, that's a lot lower, like down to 5ng/ml. Bit more severe than fitness for duty standards.
Okay, so here's the thing about marijuana and THC - it remains at detectable levels in urine for days, even weeks.
As a result it's impossible to draw conclusions about specific numbers or concentrations - all a drug test can tell you is that if you detect cannabinoids then that person has consumed some amount of majijuana in the last several days.

I, and everyone else, knows that. It isn't my point, though it is a general gripe I have with THC testing. In my job if I get hurt on the job I have to immediately pee in a cup for a drug test. If hypothetically, I took a puff or two of weed on Saturday night at the Motley Crue concert then had something stupid happen next week I would be in trouble with my job even though it would be very clear that the THC in my system had nothing to do with my injury 7+ days later. Understanding marijuana is currently an illegal substance, how does that make sense?
The things I think are important in this Josh Gordon case:
- The NFL's test limits are very, very low. 15ng/ml which is 10 times lower than the World Anti_Doping Agency and 3 times lower than most government-required testing programs.
- He has been tested up to 10 times a month since last year and passed them all. An unnamed source says he has passed 70 tests.
- If the tester had randomly put the 'B' label on the other cup Gordon would not have failed this test.
- The sample that failed was 1 ng/ml over the limit, the 'B' sample was not over the limit and the two averaged together was below the very low limit.
I know pot is only "legal" in 2 states, and is still against NFL rules, and the drug policy was collectively bargained but this case pisses me off. How do you suppose someone could pass "at least 70" tests, then when he fails it is by the very slimmest of margins (1 ng/ml) in one of the most restrictive programs I can find out there? I would imagine if someone is clean for that long and they smoked out their HTC levels would be much higher than that.

We had a CFL team here back in the 1990's. It was popular, a fun (and affordable) summer night out and they put a great effort into it after being dickteased by the NFL year after year, but by the middle of the 3rd quarter you just wanted to go the fuck home.
It was not the NFL, and having a CFL team was like kissing your sister; sure she had a decent set of tits, but it just didn't feel right.

The Baltimore Stallions were the one and only jewel of the CFL US expansion, and of course to this day will be remembered as the only US franchise to win the Grey Cup. Supposedly there is a group of Baltimore fans who makes the trip to the Grey Cup each year even still.
But look - I'm not trying to Canuck-bomb the NFL thread. I understand why most Americans have no interest in three-down football. I agree, he's their best option as opposed to what was out there in the draft or FA; he, like the rest of the team, just needs to learn how to close games. They need to learn how to win.
Unfortunately, I don't think Marvin's the man for the job, but that's the Browns for you; loyal to a fault. Any other owner would be on their 3rd head coach by now in the time it's taken Marvin Lewis to compile a mediocre career.

They know how to win. Their problem with not putting teams away is Marvin's tendency to go super conservative when he has a nice lead, which lets the other team back into the game. In the best of years there are maybe 2 games where they pile up such an insurmountable lead you can relax throughout the 4th quarter.

But seriously what I wanted for a while was for Marvin to slide into a GM position and Zimmer to take over as head coach. That ship has sailed, though.

Johnny Manziel Forced To Wear Cleveland Browns Jersey In Cruel Rookie Hazing Incident
Sports News in Brief • Sports • NFL Football • ISSUE 50•32 • Aug 11, 2014
CLEVELAND—In what many claim is further evidence pointing to the NFL's growing problem with its locker-room culture, sources confirmed Monday that former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel was forced to wear a Cleveland Browns jersey as part of a particularly cruel form of rookie hazing. "The recent incident, in which a rookie was subjected to an extreme form of public humiliation, is unacceptable and goes against the values we stand for as an organization," read an official team statement, responding to allegations that the first-year quarterback was made to wear the utterly demeaning outfit for several consecutive hours in full view of teammates, media members, and spectators. "We fully intend to impress upon all of our players that this type of 'rite of passage' can lead to significant emotional and psychological damage, and it has absolutely no place in football. We have reached out to Johnny and his family, and we hope that he will be able to move on from this and that his teammates may begin to slowly regain his trust." Sources say the Browns are also investigating whether bullying may have been at play after discovering that 2014 first-round pick Justin Gilbert was recently forced to purchase a home in Cleveland.

Wow RG3 slides awkwardly twice, gets up limping the second time.
Manziel flips off the redskins. We should set odds on what will destroy his spirit first: an NFL defender tired of hearing about Manziel, or the league office.

Brian Orakpo laughs at Aggies:
Quote"It was hilarious," said Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo, who was pegged by one teammate as the instigator. "We were messing with him a little bit, just saying this ain't college and stuff like that. We were having a little fun.
"Manziel flipped us off. It was something funny. We were all laughing on the sidelines."
Anyway RGIII is ok but maybe this means the Redskins will consider having three QBs. Colt did throw another Touchdown against a NFL (4th string) defense!
Coldplay, Rihanna, and Katy Perry asked to pay to play the Super Bowl halftime show (http://www.avclub.com/article/coldplay-rihanna-and-katy-perry-asked-pay-play-sup-208329)
QuoteRihanna, Katy Perry, or Coldplay might be doing the Super Bowl halftime show this year—that is, if they're willing to pay up. According to The Wall Street Journal, the NFL has narrowed down its list of potential performers for the 2015 gig to those three candidates, though it's also asking "at least some of the acts" if they'd be willing to pay the league for the privilege of playing the halftime show—something that's absolutely insane, but not 100 percent unreasonable, considering how many people actually watch the performance. Alternately (and this is where it gets wacky), they should "be willing to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league."
While the Super Bowl halftime show is obviously a choice gig, the idea that the NFL thinks it should then be owed part of Katy Perry's tour revenue is laughable. If anything, it seems like Perry's touring potential would only diminish after the show, after all her casual fans catch the few songs they want to see during her seven-minute halftime slot for free. Of course, the NFL could point to Beyoncé's post-Super Bowl tour earnings as an example of how the halftime show can ramp up revenue—but that's an anomaly, helped by the fact that Beyoncé hadn't been on in the road in years, and by being Beyoncé.
I guess the NFL has decided that every aspect of the Super Bowl should be a money maker.

He is Michael Vick but smaller and less durable. Vince Young had this magical ability to never get hit hard or injured. So did Marcus Allen, who looked like he would be snapped in half in about five minutes on an NFL field, but nobody ever really got a good crack on him. But RG3 just gets blasted, even in freaking preseason games. So yeah...the skins might be fucked if he cannot start flopping and running out of bounds.

I recorded the game off the NFL Network and watched it this morning. I liked the play by both Smiths, but especially Steve. That guy's compete level is just so high, and he is just so sure in making plays with the ball. Even that one he double-clutched turned into a nice gain. And that little nudge off the CB on that touchdown was magic. It's like the second coming of Anquan Boldin, even if he's not quite as big. He's definitely as hungry, and after spending all those years in the football gulag of Carolina, I can understand why.
I did find the running game a bit troubling though. If that's all the push the line can get on those power running plays, then that's not so hot. And did Pierce get concussed when he got blown up in the backfield? Yikes. The Polish Hammer did alright, aside from that one huge whiff. I like watching him catch and run. Less of a battering ram than Leach, but also a little more agile. The all-sub corner corps is interesting. I hope the real guys will be ready in two weeks.

Running game is going to be as
good bad as it was last year, so don't hold your breath on it improving this year. Just have to hope that Kubiak puts a few wrinkles into the passing game before Flacco eventually collapses from running for his life.
I think the defense is going to surprise people. As long as they're not on the field for 40 minutes a game.
Ratbirds prediction: 9-7.
I won't jinx the Bengals by making any predictions. I just hope run-blocking improves, they don't have any more key receivers injured, and defense can perform about as well as it did last year.
If the Ginger Winger can avoid the turnovers in crunchtime, the Bengalis will remain competitive.
I expect the Steelers to suck.
Really, ESPN? First Joe Flacco is ranked beneath Matt Ryan and Tony Romo, and now you're dissing Harbaugh, and ranking him beneath his more impatient, psychopath brother?
And you people wonder why I have a problem with the entrenched anti-Baltimore sentiment in the NFL, NFL Properties and the Lamestream Media. Fucking assholes. I hope Ray Lewis knocks up all your white daughters.
QuoteAn ESPN poll of NFL front office personnel and coordinators had good things to say about Ravens coach John Harbaugh, who checks in among the top quarter of NFL head coaches.
Harbaugh came in ninth in the poll conducted by ESPN's Mike Sando, which asked 30 NFL industry sources to rate the coaches on a 1-5 scale, with one being best and five being the worst. The scores were then averaged, with the lowest average number being the best.
Harbaugh's score placed him firmly in the second-tier of NFL coaches and one spot behind his brother, Jim, who coaches the San Francisco 49ers.
Harbaugh's on-field success can't be questioned, as Sando points out. The Super Bowl XLVII winner has a career .651 winning percentage as a head coach, and the Ravens' 71 wins since he took over are second only to New England, whose coach, Bill Belichick, ranks atop this list.
The piece is behind ESPN's Insider paywall, so out of deference, I won't spoil the entire thing. Harbaugh likely won't be happy that he's just behind his brother, but he's in a tier with fellow Super Bowl winners Tom Coughlin (New York Giants), Mike McCarthy (Green Bay Packers), and Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers).
ESPN is Bleacher Report with fancier graphics nowadays.

Baby Brudder always trying to compete with Big Brudder:
QuoteSan Jose police Sgt. Heather Randol confirmed that McDonald, 29, was taken into custody early Sunday after officers responded to a call at 2:48 a.m. PT.
McDonald was jailed on felony domestic violence charges and is in the custody of the Santa Clara Sheriff's Department, according to Randol. There is no timetable for McDonald's release since bail typically isn't set for domestic-violence cases until arraignment.
Niners general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement Sunday that the team takes "such matters seriously," but is not commenting on the allegations involving McDonald without more information.
The incident occurred on Bentley Ridge Drive, part of an upscale San Jose neighborhood. It is the same street where McDonald's teammate, star pass rusher Aldon Smith, was arrested for DUI following a single-car accident last September. Smith has been suspended nine games for multiple off-field incidents.
McDonald also has an arrest for DUI on his record in Santa Clara County in 2010.
Sunday's incident occurred less than three days after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced tougher penalties for players accused of domestic violence. Under the league's newly implemented personal conduct policy, a first domestic-violence offense will result in a six-game ban and a second in a lifetime ban from the NFL.
I hope the Niners can field a full defense squad this season.
Gonna miss the first game while in Fukuoka on vacation.
Also, this year's auto-draft sucked. <_<
The Texans gave Watt the extension he wanted. 6 years, $100m, $51 guaranteed.

Well it's not quite a schtick. The Als only have so many spots on their negotiation list (35 IIRC), so you don't want to be dropping serious prospects in order to reach out and contact a publicity stunt candidate.
What the hell is a negotiation list?
Quote from: sbr on September 02, 2014, 02:59:56 PM
What the hell is a negotiation list?
The CFL has a Canadian draft, but there is no draft for American players. What they do have is a negotiation list. Each team has 35 players on the negotiation list. They can add or remove players on a regular basis. If one team has a player on their list (in this case the Montreal Allouettes), then no other team can try to sign that player.
The lists are done in secret so we have no idea who is on each team's list unless it is mentioned in a news story (like this one).
So teams have to try and balance out which players will be good, but won't stick with an NFL club (and who might be amenable to coming to Canada).
If they are secret how do you know two teams don't have the same guy on their list?
Quote from: sbr on September 02, 2014, 03:06:20 PM

Secret from the public (and the players involved), but not from each other. I think the league office has the master list. But it's all fairly secretive.
