What does Languish think about the new internet surveillance bill introduced in Parliament.  The news stories are full of histrionics on both sides - especially the government's Bush type response of you are either with us or with the child porn industry 

Do any of you have a good understanding of the Bill and are you willing to share?  Or am I going to have to read the damn thing myself.

Ok, I have done some more reading.  It looks to me like the Bill authorizes Police to obtain what is in effect contact information (email addresses, mobile phone numbers, IP addresses etc) without warrant but they will need a warrant if they wish to conduct any monitoring of a persons activities whether online or on their phone.

I am not sure what the issue is other than the police may use the contact information unlawfully by tracking information without a warrant.

Again, I am interested in the views of others on this point.

Still, it doesn't really matter.  Wouldn't any sentence of anybody for anything be cruel and unusual, and thus unconstitutional?

But why should the internet be treated differently than anything else in society?

CC, I gave this some thought.  I support this plan - which only gives out basic subscriber information.

I would say it is similar to your car.  If police see your car driving down the road, they can almost instantly pull up information about who has registered that vehicle, their address and phone number.  If they had to get a warrant for that kind of information they would a: almost never have grounds, and b: the vehicle would be long gone.

Similarly there is land registration - if police want to know who owns a piece of land it is extremely easy to get that basic information - again a name and address.

Thats all police get here -  a name and contact information.  Anything more private still requires a warrant.

Right now if police want to know who uses an IP address, or who owns a cell phone number, it is very hit or miss whether they can get that information.  Having consistant and standard rules to apply would be a lot fairer to everyone.

Is there a child porn industry?  I don't know if anyone earns a livelihood over child porn, but there is definitely a cottage industry involving numbers of people, and who are payign money for access to this kind of material.

What confuses me is that the backers of this law seem to be the same people who hated the long form census because it was against peoples right to privacy.

I don't know much about the law, but i'm again' it I'm ok with CCTV and the like because you're in public. So I'm not totally on the invasion of privacy bandwagon for all things.. Your computer time is private. You want info like that you should need a warrant (which i know they still need to do further investigation).
