See I think that over-estimates Trump.  He doesn't even do basic strategy.  He just goes on instinct.

But that's my point. "They hate me, if I say vote for this guy they won't" it's the first thought of a stupid petty man.

No - the first thought of a stupid, petty man is "this guy should like me but doesn't, so I hate him".

Guess it depends who you think Trump dislikes more. A conservative who admires him enough to follow his style but savvy enough to try to distance himself through token means or a liberal who is the heir of the man he loathed and has spoken out against him far more then his competition.

Quote from: Barrister on March 24, 2025, 01:31:52 PMI dunno - what do you think Languish?
I'm not a marketing specialist - by far- but my take is that different ads can target different segment of the population.

Segmented marketing it is called.

Usually, companies will developed different brands or models for different group of people.  You don't market a Cadillac Escalade to the same people you market a Chevrolet Camaro.  But both belong to GM.

With a political party under our electoral system, it's trickier, because you want to gather everyone under the same banner.

So they make different ads.  This first one was to "market" Carney, imho.  To make him known to older Canadians, the 60+ demographics.  Not the youngsters.  The young Canadians are probably not really concerned about wether or not they "know" someone, if he's an outsider, if he worked abroad for a while.  But to the boomers and late Xers, it seems more important.

I figure there will be other ads to advertise the Liberal platforms and their promises.

Quote from: Sophie Scholl on March 23, 2025, 05:28:30 PMI quite enjoyed the new Mark Carney and Mike Myers video that got put out. Elbows up.  :Canuck:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvlVW0cFUA8

So, it's a cute ad.  I smiled.  Please don't take what I'm about to say as me being outraged or anything.

I just don't know if it's effective, and even risks leaning into one of Carney's weaknesses.

1. The ad is about how Mike Myers doesn't live in Canada - but it begs the question of Carney's ties to Canada.  Obviously Carney lived in London while governor of the Bank of England, but where exactly has he been living since then?  His job at Brookfield - well they moved to New York, didn't they.  While I'm 100% sure he has a residence in Ottawa, where does he and his family spend most of their time?

2. It's a very specific form of "Canadian-nes" they're pointing to.  It resonates very well with me (I'll break down the references below), but I'm a middle-aged white guy.  Not sure how well it resonates with younger Canadians, newer Canadians, female Canadians even.

So the references:

I forgot the most basic!  "elbows up".  I saw on Twitter a lot of people wondering where the term even came from.

It, like a lot of the ad, comes from hockey.  I know I've even used the phrase on Languish before.  It's a Gordie Howe-ism.  Howe, when going into the corner, would keep his "elbows up" so he could smash the opposing player in the face with his elbow.

It's very "hockey".  There's a reason the "Gordie Howe hat trick" is a goal, an assist, and a fight.  Gordie Howe never won the Lady Byng award for the most sportsmanlike.

Ao again - I have no problem with the Liberals using the phrase "elbows up".  But I do wonder how much it means to the wider population.

Everyone who knows hockey knows elbows up. So a majority of canadians.

I was surprised because I was under the impression that the English expression was Elbows Out.

The Conservatives have move much further right than before, the NPD much further left and the Libs are going to the center.
