Quote from: Barrister on March 20, 2025, 12:04:13 PMBut for Carney this is Politics 101.  He's playing up his very real Edmonton connections.  He grew up here after being born in NWT and graduated high school.  That being said he left for university and hasn't called Edmonton home for 40 years, so it does come across as pandering.  If I were to suddenly run for Parliament in Winnipeg it would seem strange, and I only left 25 years ago.
It is 101 as you say. It was a very big thing in the selection contests for candidates who were backed by the Labour leadership. They all clearly used the same template from a comms agency: "I'm proud to come from x constituency. My mum was a nurse in the local hospital/grandad was a miner. I grew up here and went to school here. I've been a local councillor etc etc."

Unmentioned is that after going to school there, they went to Oxbridge, became a local councillor in a London borough and spent the last decade or two working for a Labour-aligned think tank, trade union or lobbying firm

He's just getting ahead of the inevitable conservative attacks that he's not really Canadian because he was out of the country for his education and a large chunk of his career.
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

For sure (possibly quite a sensible attack line too - although I'd lean more on wealth and out of touch) - and also you only get one chance to make a first impression. You want to try and define yourself and not get defined by your opponents. Although it does matter that it's authentic.

Both sides will want to "win" on setting that first impression either by Carney defining himself, or whatever the Conservative attack line is fixing instead.

All politicians are wealthy. The ones that aren't weren't good enough politicians to become wealthy

You have a pretty poor memory. BB has attacked Carney in this thread for being not Canadian enough already. That's why I took him up on his pandering comment. BB is just repeating the conservative party line.

I'm not sure why you continue to enter these discussions with your context. Indicators turned to zero.

Le P'tit gars de Baie-Comeau.

The boy from Baie-Comeau.

That is how Brian Mulroney described himself when he was elected.  Truth is, he couldn't wait to get out of there.  He finished high school and went to study in Montreal, got his career at Iron Ore and never really looked back.

Jean Chrétien, the boy from Shawinigan.  Got elected somewhere in New Brunswick when he first returned in politics as leader of the Liberals.

So, year, it's basic politics to paint yourself as a local, small town/neighbourhood person.  Every party leader will try to do it, no matter the affiliation.

I won't fault Carney for this.

As for the assets, he moved as fast as required for the blind trust.  I don't really care about the public stuff before 60 days.  It's a formality.  It's much less important than a security clearance by a party leader.

René Lévesque.

Can't really get more of a seperatist than him.

He spent years serving as a journalist in WW2.  For the US Army.

Jacques Parizeau, former leader of the PQ, who co-led the OUI campaign during the 1995 referendum.  Studied in Paris.  Bernard Landry, former Finance Minister of the PQ and former Prime Minister of Quebec (PQ).  Studied in London.

The current leader of the Parti Québécois, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, and likely next Prime Minister if the polls are to be believed, also studied abroad.

It's not that unusual.  And I can't fault people who have the chance to study abroad and expand their horizons.

I don't think you and I are in any disagreement.

Can't wait for this election to be over already

Not sure I can stand six weeks or so of arguing, childish behaviour, he/said, he said, debates, name-calling, pettiness, etc

And that's just BB and CC 😁

Plus trump, every day, without fail, commenting, interfering. :P

I'm almost willing to be there won't be a single day of the campaign that he won't comment or try to influence it. <_<

Meanwhile, in the West...

Board of Alberta Health Services fired on same day that investigation report was due
QuoteThe Alberta government dissolved the board of the provincial health authority the same day the organization was scheduled to receive a report from investigators examining whether some of its business deals were subject to "improper activity," according to a document obtained by The Globe and Mail.

Further, the Health Minister dismissed the board after some directors forwarded a letter to the Auditor-General alleging that government officials meddled in Alberta Health Services's operations to the benefit of private companies, according to a separate document obtained by The Globe.

Premier Danielle Smith's government has been facing controversy since The Globe first reported that AHS's former chief executive, Athana Mentzelopoulos, launched multiple investigations into the health authority's purchasing processes before the province fired her Jan. 8.

Ms. Mentzelopoulos has since filed a lawsuit alleging that government officials, including the Premier's then-chief of staff, leaned on her to sign deals with private companies that she claims were inflated compared with competitors' contracts.
Alberta Auditor-General Doug Wylie in February confirmed he is examining issues that Ms. Mentzelopoulos identified. In March, the RCMP confirmed it is investigating the allegations and the Premier appointed a retired judge from Manitoba to conduct a review. Peter Guthrie resigned from Ms. Smith's cabinet over the government's handling of the file.

What is she hiding?

Why do conservatives everywhere hate healthcare?

In NA, it not about remembering-it's learning.  And you know how highly education is valued.
