Oh, and if we're talking Arthur C. Clarke I'd much rather have somebody adapt Childhood's End (I refuse to acknowledge the SyFy version).

Yeah, that was terrible.

And let's also do Rendezvous with Rama once we're at it.

Love the book, but I'm not sure it lends well to a movie. The plot is very minimal. "People board an extraterrestrial ship, see weird alien stuff, then leave".

There's a video game adaptation of it: https://youtu.be/Pu4n5YXPaMQ

The video says it's actually an adaptation of the sequel  :P

(I haven't read Rama II or any of the other sequels).

EDIT: Oooooh FMV. Man I miss the 1990s

The Doctor Strange What If?  Was pretty gloomy.

I'm liking the Foundation.

Moreover, in the book HAL malfunctions because he's been programmed to lie to the crew (keeping the purpose of the mission a secret), which conflicts with his directive to serve the crew.

Yeah, I kind of wish that had made it into the movie. I get that Kubrick wanted no exposition whatsoever, but the book version of HAL is so much more interesting than an evil machine.

It made it into the 2010 movie.  :P

2010

One of my favorite Sci-Fi movies. It holds up reasonably well.

Both 2001 and 2010 would be great to be re-done, IMO. Update the story a bit, and re-imagine it re-based on Clarks novels....

You'd be a fool to take on 2001.
2010 fine.

I'd like to see the sequel to that, 2061, filmed.

I would say not try to redo 2001.

More a matter of taking the totality of the overall story, and re-telling it with modern understanding of the science.

Don't try to "redo" 2001. It's kind of a very specific icon and style.

I'd rather see Villeneuve's take on Rama.

I'd rather see Villeneuve's take on Rama.

I'm not sure that would make for a very good film.
It's one of those that has been copied so much that the original would just seem dull. It'll need a lot of changes.

I'm watching a new show La Brea on NBC. Pretty good, interesting twist - syfi kind of story. I like it a lot.

Has Rama ever been made into a TV show or movie? I've never heard of it being made. Amazing story, very long with a lot to it, loved the read. I would think it would be a bear of a story to make a movie out of.

Also saw the Yellowstone 2 hour season opener on Paramount TV. It was or maybe still is also on Paramount+ streaming. Great show and characters, a huge favorite. :)

There's not much to Rama as a story. It's just a bunch of astronauts with little personality exploring an alien ship. Now, what they find in the ship is very cool, but in the end is of little consequence (which is part of the point of the book). I honestly don't think it would make for a good movie without completely changing the book, and then what's the point?

I'd rather see his take on Ringworld.

I don't know. there is a fair bit of mystery to it. Also, IIRC, didn't someone go missing, and they had to look for her. I don't know a good filmmaker can make a good film out of it -- even if some changes from the book might be necessary. But that happens all the time.

I went on IMDB to look; apparently there have been several attempts but nothing was ever greenlit.
