Current gen Forester is a nice drive. My next car is probably going to be a previous-gen Prius, though. I'm flogging the Matrix pretty hard, but realistically I never drive far except on the weekends. So I need a city car with some decent cargo capacity.

I seem to remember he had one of these "recommend me a car" threads a few years ago.  Didn't remember what we recommended or what he actually got, and he may have changed cars more than once since then anyway.

I've got a friend that runs a used BMW and Mercedes Benz auto dealership.  He recommends even older (7-10-years) Mercedes over most 3-year-old used cars (except the jap ones) in terms of likely maintenance expenses.  Benzes are expensive to get fixed, but things seldom go wrong.  BMWs are another story...
