I don't think it was for no reason. A vast swath of American voters are working low paying retail jobs and they really really want to have a manufacturing job instead. Trump promised them that. The intrisicities of economic reality is not something they know nor care about.

The problem is that the "low-paying" retail jobs are actually high-paying for relatively unskilled work because thay cannot be outsourced to some eager foreigner willing to work for $10 a day.
