I'm pretty sure it is.

Donald John Trump does indeed have a college degree.

It is being held against its will and has tried to escape multiple times but without any luck so far.

He showed up in a Bo Derek movie as well.  :D Ghosts can't do it

QuoteHe's always been famous for being famous. Like the Kardashians, but without the porn. Don't know why him specifically though, America has plenty of rich narcissists. Even some that aren't incompetent.

Thankfully.  :P

If you're curious ask the  Russians. My going theory is still, despite minsky's opinion :P , is that Russia has some nasty stuff on Trump

Well Russia is getting fucked now, though I think that is more OPEC's doing. The oil price was going way down last I checked.

Of course they do.  Who doesn't?
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

Quote from: Sheilbh on April 08, 2025, 09:03:52 AMShould say I get the complaint at sanewashing/Trumpsplaining a bit more now - I went for dinner with some old colleagues recently including some who work in the City.

Most of them did seem to think this was basically all a negotiating tactic that would involve various countries/markets doing deals with the US - that may be where it ends up if market pressure coerces Trump. They were kind of surprised by my take which was just that Trump really likes tariffs and thinks they're good

Yeah it's just weird what a strong effect personal charisma can have on people.

Quote from: HVC on April 08, 2025, 08:17:35 AMThe tech bros are hit the hardest so far, arent they? Of the rich i mean. 401k holders are the real losers right now.

Sure. But they still have tons of money they can use to buy up assets when everything bottoms out. At least that is how it went in the 2008 crisis and Covid.
They have more money than most, but the techbro fortunes are usually in stocks, which have been getting hit pretty hard and in unpredictable ways that make borrowing against it questionable.  Unless Trump gets his rate cut.
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

:tinfoil:

This seems to refer to the work of Balaji Srinivasan and other techno-libertarians. The faction is represented in the government by people like Vance.

It's public, so hardly tinfoily. What I find hardest to believe is that these so called libertarians are going to let go now that they've got a taste for centralized power.

I don't think it's that - to be clear they think it's really bad, they hate Trump and they think the policy is mad even as a negotiating tactic.

I think it's more testament to "normalisation" in the deepest sense - not in a sort of normative sense of treating Trump like a normal President (which I'm not sure matters) - but trying to domesticate it all to an extent. To reduce what is very odd to the realm of normal politics with rational-ish explanations.

FWIW I wonder if that's part of the rise of conspiracy thinking (and maybe to that extent the popularity of Trump) is simply that I think we're in a period with fairly significant structural changes that we want to be able to explain with goodies and baddies etc.

(And I suppose if you're working the City you can't just shrug and say Trump likes tariffs - you're being paid to do analysis and come up with different options etc not just spitballing into the void online )

Libertarianism is very, very supportive of state power - it's just they only really back the coercive side of the state. It's the night watchman state.

Works a treat in both El Salvador and Argentina.
