As said though this wouldn't work for just northern Ireland. The entire British economy would relocate there.
Has to be the whole of the UK keeping our rights or nobody.

There are blue passports at stake here, mate.

But it'd finally kill London like you always wanted
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

And it seems at the prospect of border control between NI and GB the DUP have already said lol no.

That seems to be the attitude of some brexiters sadly. They recognise they're fucking everything up but in doing so they are dragging others down to their level so hurray.

The socialist way. This is not.

I don't think that keeping Northern Ireland in a de facto single market and customs union is feasible unless the goal is a unification of Ireland. Is there any country in the world that has such a setup? You might as well split off NI from Great Britain then as Brussels would have more influence than London.

It will be interesting how this develops. A British government that cannot commit to negotiations due to domestic politics is a poor partner for free trade talks...

Yeah, I can see why DUP is against it.

Stopping something like that is the raison d'etre of the DUP...

I wonder if Scotland will be asking for the same, if true.

Or Gibraltar...

Actually I'm wondering why Gibraltar isn't being discussed too. I know it's just 40,000 people but the hard border with Spain will kill their economy. And unlike N. Ireland they aren't part of Metropolitan UK so a special status should be easier to implement.

I don't get why May would not get the commitment of the DUP in advance before she offers such a policy. Don't national leaders typically do that before going to Brussels?

Apparently what the DUP objected to was to the language of the agreement, not to the underlying stuff. I read somewhere that it's all a bit of a political charade to keep everybody's bases happy, and that an agreement will be reached later this week.

It's not part of the most pressing set of issues, which are the three topics in which the EU wanted to reach an agreement before discussing the trade deal. I guess it'll be treated in the 2nd round of negotiations once an agreement is reached in the three big topics, as part of the trade deal.

Btw, as soon as it was leaked that NI could get a special deal, the leaders of Scotland, London and Wales floated similar things for their regions. At the end of the day it seems that only England itself (sans London) is happy with Brexit.

I still think it is undemocratic not to have a vote on the specific Brexit plan. Many people who voted for this thing were voting for promises of a thousand free unicorns since the Brexit crowd never had to put forth realistic policy points. I mean so long as we are governing by plebiscite here.

I just want to say that I agree with the DUP's stance...........this is a first, achievement unlocked  :yeah:

Taking back control = the loss of NI.  Ok, not much of a loss from the point of view of Surrey or Lancashire; but until the people of NI want to leave the UK we certainly have no right to effectively kick them out.
