I went to Memphis's Barbecue Fest today. On the river front, a massive-bellied throng of tattooed barbecue enthusiasts drank beer, made crude puns, and made revelry. Establishments such as Too sauced to pork and You pull my pork, and i'll rub your ribs gave out their delicious food. It was crowded, with shirtless men puffing cigars and slapping each other (and me, occasionally) on the back in the hawing festivities.

It was a final serenade for Memphis life- I will probably never see something like it again. The final serenade became more literal than anticipated when later in the evening I approached the glorious river to which my fair city owes its life and extended a hand, palm upwards, singing to a floating log I saw go down the river. At the moment I was taken in by the violent, ugly beauty of the town, and imagined myself atop the log and my song a form of barcarole as I went down the river leaving the city I loved behind.

My roommate bore it in good humour, looking at the sunset smoking a pipe. It was a picturesque moment and I had a wonderful time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_barbarossa#Invasion_musical_theme
QuoteEach German invasion of a foreign country had an official musical theme that was frequently played for the purposes of Nazi propaganda over the totally government controlled radio stations after the invasion was officially announced to whip up enthusiasm for the military operation among the German population. The theme song for Operation Barbarossa was Les preludes by Franz Liszt.

I thought that it was pretty well known among guys who consider themselves history geeks, at least for Barbarossa?

The Les Préludes Fanfare is pretty famous for that.

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

I had no idea.  Did they do it for smaller invasions too?  Like, I don't know, Albania?

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.

Yeah, that's what I thought.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Beyond being a more optimistic person, I have to stop enjoying other people's misery. I feel very guilty about it, and do my best to drive it out of my mind. It may be too much to wish not to dislike anyone, but I certainly shouldn't wish ill on anyone.

I hope everyone here has the blessing of good fortune.

The new Rush album??  Aren't they all about 70?

Less 10 years, yeah. :D

Got tickets for their Toronto gig in October.

Their first album came out when they were 17 years old. How did they not flame out in a cyclone of hookers and blow?

Props to them, I guess. I probably would have fucked up my life if I had been successful so early on.

Did you ever watch the documentary on them that came out a year ago.May have been called "Beyond the Lighted Stage," I think.

It it they talk to the dude from Kiss with the tongue. Rush used to tour with Kiss a lot early on. And the Kiss guy says that in the hotels when they were partying it up and womanizing, the Rush guys were in their rooms. They also all got married very early on in their careers.
