Cold maple syrup is more viscous. Easier to poor without it just going all over :Canuck:

Yes - and we often don't have big fridges (couldn't get an American style fridge freezer in my flat :weep:)...

Interesting :hmm:

Also from the Which? guide you just need to:
QuoteIn anything with a sugar content of more than 60%, the sugar acts as a preservative to keep microbial degradation at bay.

Maple syrup falls just short of this, allowing some moulds to get a hold, so store it in the fridge.

If you keep it in a cupboard, you may find mould forming, especially on the lid because of its exposure to air when you open it.

Dr Schenker says: 'People may think that because it's a syrup, it can be treated like others syrups such as golden syrup. But they're from different plants and have different properties, so require different treatment.'

I really enjoy a opening a new can of maple syrup precisely because it hasn't been refrigerated yet. Doesn't happen every day.

You put milk in plastic sacks and maple syrup in cans.

Why not? Just like beer in cans, there's no need for a fancy container for something you have everyday.

Also, you have cheese in spray cans.

That's not cheese.  It's "processed cheese spread product."  :yucky:

I mean oil and honey will go solid so we keep them in the cupboard, but everything else goes straight in the fridge.
Fridge space is finite.

And putting cold sauce on hot food is not nice.

Cold ketchup with hot fries is great.

Yeah, we have Spam on a rope too.  :D

I'm curious, does it come in a can like pork and beans and you open it with a church key?  I'm trying to figure out how that works.

Jacob

Church key = can opener?

When I've come across the expression it's always referred to a bottle opener.

No, you punch a triangular hole it it (well two, so air can enter the can) with tapper/bottle opener like this.

This is not the best angle picture, but you can sort of see it - though they failed to put in the hole on the other side, most likely resulting in an awkward pouring experience.

Some are in cans like Jacob said (think apple juice cans... you guys have/had that right?) *edit* didn't see the picture Jacob posted. Some come in cans with a screw top like an old rectangle gas can.

We do have glass and plastic containers too :P

Now I want maple syrup... and apple juice from a can. The plastic jugs don't taste the same. I need me some dissolved aluminum.

I wasn't sure about the term.  Can opener to me means the thing with two handles and a cutting wheel.

Church keys I saw growing up had both the bottle opener and the pointy jabbing thing.
